IF you don't like the leveling system in oblivion, and the npc's are hammering away at you... just drop the difficulty. You can at any moment at in the options.
Exactly...
Why do people complain about the difficulty with this option available?
You should be able to beat the game with the default settings without having to worry about your level. Betheseda failed at this point.
Yeah...
I mean, I didn't die too often with the default settings, but when I did, its just... too much of a hassle.

A zone based system works the best I think, Area 1 is for level 1-10, Area 2 is for 11-20 etc. Altough Fallout 3's system does work better than Elder Scrolls

Does no one know of the difficulty slider? If you dont like having challange in your games, then play those kid learning games. I can understand the fun of being super powerful and able to do virtually anything, but I also enjoy challange of getting there. The difficulty slider in Oblivion is good because I can do either whenever and wherever. I keep mine a bit below the middle so to retain an edge, but sometimes I just make it to the lowest and kill everything, then reload.

I've hated leveling enemies since Final Fantasy 8.

I can see it as okay in some respects, and its gone fairly well in Fallout 3, but in general it really removes the point of leveling as a whole.

Instead of leveling the enemies, simply make the default enemies stronger as your progress, ala Diablo 1 and 2, it makes leveling feel a lot more rewarding.

Leveled enimes in Oblivion blew. To counter that I turned invisable and ran from all the enimies. I only killed when i had to; and when i did i used enchated swords. On a side note infinate respawning enimies is right up there w/ leveling enimies in my book. they are both so annoying. And in rare cases they are game breakers.

I hate the leveling idea. It doesn't make any sense and it takes the FUN out of adventuring! What's the point if all you're going to find is exactly as powerful as what you have already? Or if you come across an extreme badass in a tomb you're exploring and you can beat him just as easily NOW as you could at level 1? If you find a "legendary" item (like the Umbra sword) at level 1, it'll be junk by level 5.

Horrible, horrible, horrible!

Consider, instead, you're roaming that same tomb and you come across a badass who completely thwomps you and you barely escape with your life. You decide to train and level until you can go back and actually have an epic battle with him. Or perhaps you get lucky and you beat the guy even though he vastly over-powered you.

Which one is more rewarding? Which one gives you a better sense of accomplishment? Which one is more FUN: bland sameness or overcoming a challenge?
Not everything levels at the same rate as you. For example, there is a unicorn hanging around somewhere (some grove). Go and try to kill it before you hit level 20...I think you'll find it's somewhat impossible. Go back at level 30 and what as it cripples beneath your hits.

What the leveling does it is affects the enemies that spawn, at level 1 you are unlikely to find a storm atronarch wandering around outside a town, but level 15 the game is supposed to have progressed so that it would make sense for one to be hanging around. It is also supposed to have given you enough time to have leveled and fight it. I don't the usefulness of (at least legendary) weapons is affected by your level when you find them, their stats increase as yours do.

The leveling enemies where probably the worst thing in oblivion, the morrowind system of easy enemies in one location and badass enemies in another was perfectly fine, I dont know why they messed with a near perfect formula, all they really needed to do was Morrowind with fancy grafix, and you would have the perfect game, unfortunatly oblivion though good, was still no where near as good as morrowind.
If only they could fuse that aspect of Morrowind with the combat and level-up-perks of Oblivion. Betheseda, make it happen.

I fucking hate the levelled monsters system. I chose battlemage as my class thinking it would be badass, but now I find my self at level 20, 15+ hours into the game, and my whole battle plan consists of: 1. Run from enemy chasing me. 2. Find a big yet scaleable rock. 3. Use my superior acrobatic skills ( I jump EVERYWHERE instead of walking lol) to scale said rock/wall/object monster can't get up. 4. Stand there and shoot fireballs at monster/summon scamp to fight monster/ look down and swing sword at monster. 5. Repeat until dead.
This actually wouldn't be a problem if, in a different game, I was taking out something badass, but in Oblivion, I have to do it for every freaking monster. I'm going to create a new charachter with less shitty stuff, but it pisses me off that I had to waste 15 hours of my time finding that out, and have to start all over again.

It has its ups and downs.

On one hand, it means you can go anywhere at anytime, the world is open to you, and it removes grind. On the other hand, you don't feel like you're getting much stronger, and at lower difficulty levels the game is insanely easy.

Overall it worked a lot better in Fallout 3 than Oblivion.

I power levelled to 50 (manually and painstakingly, over the course of about 3-4 days) before starting to play the game, and played through it at level 50, and I had great fun with the game after that.

If you have trouble in the game, you can always 100% chameleon, and just sneak attack everything, one hitting almost everything in the whole game, all without technically cheating

It's not just the leveled enemies but also the leveled loot which required a guide to figure out when the best time to do a quest was.

If you play the game at a normal pace, you dont have to worry about it.

But if you go and down zomg all the side missions, find all the Daedra Artifacts... and complete alot of the faction quests (mages guild in particular) You tend to get rewards at the end that are pretty friggin sweet.

The game is balanced, but once you put effort into the game, you can EASILY unbalance it.

I dont like the fact that they level. So I downloaded Obscuros Oblivion Overhaul. It means that it places weak as well as strong enemies around the place. For example, bandits no longer walk around in GOD ARMOUR, but you can be walking around at level 2 and encounter a troll, or a pack of three THATS RIGHT THREE wolves.

Aww thats kind of cheating...
If you put the slider down to the least, then you do 6x the damage and recieve 1/6. I was 1 shotting bosses with a freakin bow (was sneaking though).
The enemies only level up every 10 levels or so, and after 5 they STOP. once you reach about 50% in the Main Story, things become insultingly easy.

I've poured countless hours (I counted, it's in the 60's) into Oblivion on the ps3. Lvling npc's are easily mistaken as the broken mechanic. It's in fact, just the middle result. The end result creating a frustratingly impossable game. Here's the problem;

It's so easy to lvl up in Oblivion, that you can outpace yourself in power. When you make your character, you naturally invest in skills you want to be good at. However, those skills are what earn you level ups. Fight with swords, get beat on in your armor, mix potions, pick locks, etc etc; if you invested in them because you intended to use them to effect, you'll level extreemly fast just roaming.

As your threat rises, the challenge and equipment of foes then do too. However, you can't keep pace with your initial character, and the threat of the surroundings. The only sound alternitive (aside from tweeking with the difficulty bar) is to use skills you did NOT invest in to gain in power without leveling up.

So, at lvl 10, your character has equipment of a lvl 5'ish character (with an exception or two). The enemies are all twice your better, forcing you to lean heavily on those skills that are secretly killing you. You lvl faster, the enemies get stronger, and suddenly each fight is a battle for your life. Your attention is drawn to the leveling monsters and NPC's, and forgets about the underlying problem.

I remade a new character in Oblivion. She invested in skills that are HARD to level up. The adventuring skills like Jumping and running. Heavy armor AND light. Only one would be used with any frequency. Etc etc, you get the idea. I was then allowed to train up the swords/weapons skills, and alchemy, and other skills I wanted to use with regularity because I found them fun. It was a slow process at first. Daunting not being that good at some things. But as the game progressed, I found myself challenged, and able to meet the challenge.

The mechanic is flawed. It's not a perfect game. But because of how you grow in power, different players experiance the game differently.

All I have to say on the matter is this:

Bandits should not be wearing mastercrafted glass armor.
Couldn't agree more.
Also I remember on my first play through after becoming champion of the arena much later on at a high lvl coming back to do a fight vs three mountain lions which PWN'd my ass in seconds. I mean WTF is that about? I was leader of all factions but I guess that means nothing when a big kitty cat can out DMG me.
My 2nd play through I knew that I needed to max everything and stay a low lvl. I beat the game being on lvl 3. I have heard others doing it on level 1. Bad game design period.

Why do people keep saying with a leveling system like Oblivions you can go anywhere. In Marrowind I can go anywhere too. I just have to be more skillful with it. Also, if i just don't lvl how come town guards don't complete the main mission for me?
