I used to get this same recurring nightmare every week where I would get chased around my "school" by some horrible ravenous beast that was always constantly on my heels, yet I never was able to actually see -- like something out of the twightlight zone or something. This went on a long time so of course I began to recognise when I was in the dream because school and stuff would sort of fade into whatever I was dreaming about at the time.

So eventually became sick of running and just decided I wouldn't bother running -- well I got "dream-killed" which is sort of where you dream being almost on the point of being killed, then it sort of stretches that out a bit, and then it sort of runs out of ideas about what to do next. So sometimes it just fades into another dream. Or sometimes it resets, but you can't really be so worked up about it the second time... So sometimes it just stops, like everything just disappears like well, like the holo-deck from star trek (nerdy reference I know).

I distinctly remember one time it tried the chasing thing on me and I was just like, nahhh I ain't gonna get worked up about that today and just decided to dream about something else, like flying cos I'd heard you can do that in a dream. It actually worked -- it was great! And I never had that nightmare again (they at least got a bit more diverse before eventually going completely touch wood).

Some of my dreams are real. I don't recognise them as real until like a few seconds into them when they repeat themselves like a week later IRL.
I've had some lucid dreams. Once I was in a scray dream and then I was like "no wait, wasn't I just in bed... oh so I'm dreaming. That makes sense then." For the rest of the dream, I made out with a girl I had a liking for (wasn't in the mood for a sex dream) and then we went for a walk and had ice cream. It ranks in my top 5 dreams of all time.

I've had some lucid dreams over the years but normally I just get confused and it doesnt go anywhere, I did manage to sort of fly once, using a plastic bag and this led to my confusion.
My dreams are almost always distressing in some way though, lots of ones with conflict or falling, the latter making me almost fall out of bed.
A while after a dream I also tend to confuse it with actual memories, some mornings this results in me having a completely wrong idea of what day it is.

I've been experimenting with REM sleep (thats the portion of sleep when you actually dream) and have been trying to force my body to enter short naps of sleep which should eventually all sync into REM sleep and so far I've been remembering all my dreams vividly, haven't been able to control them or induce lucid dreaming yet though anyone got any tips?

When I was younger I went through a brief phase of being able to wake myself up from dreams if I became aware I was in fact dreaming. It was weird though, I couldn't just "wake up" and open my eyes. It was like my brain woke up first and had to force my body to follow suit, leading to the bizarre sensation of being trapped in my body. So I'm having this nightmare where I'm lost in this old, haunted hospital when I realize it's a dream and I can wake myself up. So I do, enduring the scary feeling of "hey, maybe my body won't wake up and I'm trapped in here forever". But it works, so I get out of bed, open the door to go get a glass of water from the kitchen, and I'm right back in the f'ing hospital! This cycle repeats TWO more times! Finally I wake up and after being really scared to open the bedroom door again to find I'm still stuck in the loop, I man up open the door...and it's the hallway in my home. I breathe a sigh of relief, go get my water and for some odd reason go out to the front porch (it's like 3am). I open the front door and notice a little girl on a tricycle in the street, ala The Shining. She notices me, smiles, and says,"You're still not awake yet." That was when I finally woke up for real, freaked the fuck out. Blargh!
You're still not awake yet Jeff.

I've only lucid dreamed once I believe. I remember walking down a hall way talking to someone, well, I was watchig myself walk down a hallway talking to someone and then I said, "This isn't real." The other person just sorta looked at me and i stopped and leaned against a wall and waited to wake up. I didn't do anything else, I just waited. The strangest thing was that my brain aparently thought that me waiting to wake up wasn't good enough so i stayed asleep for a long time, or short time, time is really relative.

As for dreams being real... I dunno, i've had some of my dreams come true, and I mean pretty damn specific. But it took months for it to come to pass so I guess they can be real, but most of the time there just your subconscious toying with you.

Yes, I have become aware of dreams and influenced them a couple of times.
But I don't know why it happened to those particular dreams and not others.

Yeah, all the time. In fact most of the dreams I can remember were "lucid". It's very fun, trying new things and seeing if I wake up. But it is interesting that I can't just wake up on command, theres a process. Like, I have to do something that my brain can't process correctly or I'll simply be waking up in the dream. I'll beleive that I was awake and go through what feels like most of a day and then I actually wake up. It always feels like that day was taken from me 0.o.

I daydream ALL. THE. TIME.

Lucid dreams are real and proven fact but unfortunately I can't seem to do it. I've begun experimenting with stuff like the WILD and MILD methods for inducing lucid dreams and hopefully I will get those to work.

I used to lucid dream a lot. Once, I left my house and flew over the river, went to NYC and went to the statue of liberty. There I met a flying girl. We flew around for a while and then she left. I decided to fly even higher, I went so high in fact that I think I was nearing the ozone. I couldn't breath, and I started to fall. When I neared the water, I started to fly again. I went back home and went back into my house and went back into bed, I then woke up.

I'm not going to explain my view on why we dream, how we dream, where we actually go when we dream, or any of that stuff as it is not of the normal viewpoint of the average person.

All of this talk about lucid dreams and whether they're real reminds me of that scene in the Matrix where Morpheus is introducing Neo to the real world.

Morpheus: 'What is 'real'? How do you define 'real'?

Rarely I can, but not always. It's getting to the point where I haven't remembered a dream in a few months.

I always have lucid dreams, since I was about 9. It is awesome, it's like being god. I also haven't had a nightmare for years because of this. M4A1 with the SOPMOD CARBINE PWNS SCARY THINGS FTW.
