That's an interesting point, by which I assume you mean that Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Pachabel and all the other Johans throughout the renaissance and baroque eras, whose music is the literal foundation for all modern music be it rock or rap, are the proud writers of empty music with no substance. I'm sure John Williams and the guy who did the LOTR music would argue that instrumental music can add atmosphere and take you on a journey without the whine of some idiot 20 something wanting to be the moral minority and I would overwhelmingly agree with them. In basically all audio visual media be it west or east instrumental music can make a heartstring tugging moment pull all that much harder or give a climactic fight scene that little bit more energy to it. Something which lyrics could threaten.Seanda said:...without good music its a poem, not a song. Without good lyrics it lacks meaning. I need at least some skill in both, thankyou.
What I mean is, real music is the kind of thing where all aspects of a song come together in perfect harmony to craft a message that the artist feels is important. Rap relies on the beat much more than the lyrics.Oolinthu said:What, precisely, stops rap from being real music or having brilliant lyrics?Weapon_Master_Jedi said:If you have brilliant lyrics but the music sucks (and I'm talking about real music, not rap), the song sucks.
You've been listening to the wrong rap, I'd say. With most rap, the accompanying rhythm or beats are either deliberately simplistic, or tailored to suit the mood of the lyrics. The emphasis has always been on the lyrics, even in rap songs with excellent production or even original music (like The Roots, for example). That's why rap with good lyrics is so good, and rap with bad lyrics is so shitty, even if it's still great for dancing to.Weapon_Master_Jedi said:What I mean is, real music is the kind of thing where all aspects of a song come together in perfect harmony to craft a message that the artist feels is important. And I'm not saying rap can't have brilliant lyrics. But a rap song doesn't suck just for having bad lyrics. Because its focus is on the rhythm, not the words.
I agree. Rap with good lyrics is great. And I'm not denying that it's music. I'm just saying that a lot of the people I've known who listen to the particular genre aren't the type who pay attention to lyrics. I know this from speaking to them. All they care about is that they can dance to the song's beat. And, in fact, they don't seem to fully understand the musical value of an empty spot in the beat where it's just the lyrics for a few seconds.Oolinthu said:You've been listening to the wrong rap, I'd say. While rapping by itself isn't music, rather poetry, many rap songs certainly qualify as music. I don't see the basis for claiming that rap isn't music simply because it has rapping in it.
