Who do you think is the manliest anime character? I only put other because I can't think of any manlier than the ones listed so if you can think of any more feel free to add. Kamina gets my vote.... episode 8 still hurts me.

I haven't heard of many of those...except maybe that Dio Brando character people keep mentioning from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. He's apparently a gentleman vampire who lives in a mansion, screams at people and has a laaaaarge chest. As far as anime characters go, that sounds fairly legit.

Who else but...

Kenshiro of Fist of the North Star. Able to make people's heads explode, protector of the innocent to a fault, and has an iconic battle cry.

I think I only know Goku from there, who never struck me as particularly manly. Muscly for sure, but not particularly masculine. He has something boyish about him. Even when he gets serious you feel you're dealing with an ominous child.

Well, I guess it depends on how we want to define "manly". If we're going based on manly virtues to be honest I've seen so many "hot blooded" heroes out there, especially if we're going into things that are not entirely serious, that it's like a million way tie and would have to come somewhere from within that genera. Someone like "The Strong Arm" Alchemist sort of disqualifies himself, because while he's really muscular, his fairly laid back demeanor and "pedigree" diminish him in this aspect, the same sort of applies to guys like Kenshiro who a lot of the time has that calm "zen" thing going on. I haven't seen everything, but I suppose if I had to go with a fairly safe candidate I'd probably say "Guy" from the old soft porn/action series by the same name (Guy: Awakening The Devil, etc...) as he's pretty much designed to be so cool and manly that it kind of parodies the whole trope (and it's played straight). He both manages to do the whole "cool as ice" schtick and the "hot blood" thing simultaneously through his demon transformation. Of course this is fairly obscure, it's one of the first "pinks" (as opposed to full on "reds") that got brought into the US in any mainstream sense.

That said part of the entire "Hot Blood" style is being deliberately manly, and indeed "a man's role" is a big part of the whole concept, and the characters even loudly proclaim this as they are doing things, and oftentimes win through channeled anger, recklessness, and being manly. Indeed half the point of these characters is unbridled man-rage where they wind up trashing overpowered, more laid-back sorts, through pure emotion and their drive for justice, and usually the more stupidly reckless they are being the more powerful they become.

The anime "Scryed" featured a central conflict between the two co-heroes which was pretty much pitting the "cool tough guy" against "the hot blooded hero", where of course the central conflict required them to stop beating on each other and work together against the real bad guys. This anime being sort of noteworthy as the two characters were at one point both so awesome and powerful, and so equal, that reality pretty much fractured when they fought each other.

The thing is though that while "cool" the whole laid back, sort of calm/zen thing isn't anime "manliness" although it could be argued that outside of anime in actual Japanese society it does represent a sort of ideal, which is probably why Anime has an entire genera that leaks into other things that lionizes exactly the opposite.

I didn't even click on the thread before I thought of this guy.

Clearly the Manliest amongst all Men.

Guts laughs at your pitiful list!

But yeah, you don't get any manlier than Guts. Not because he's the strongest fighter in his universe, but because he's NOT the strongest, and he keeps on trucking anyway. His eye is gouged out, his arm is cut off, his friends are killed, his girlfriend is raped, and through it all he just. keeps. going. Sure, Goku can bench press the moon, but none of the people above have Guts's strength of character. Most of those men would have been emotionally crippled long ago, if they endured what he endured. He's like the Rocky Balboa of anime characters. It doesn't hurt that Guts is actually a deconstruction of the masculine male hero, whereas the guys above are played completely straight.

Otherwise I guess I'd vote for Kamina, since he was an awesome parody of the typical anime hero.

I'll throw a new one in here and say Gamagori from Kill la Kill, he *is* Satsuki-sama's living shield after all. He actually scales in height from scene to scene just so he's always the biggest and manliest thing in the room. Also, that voice acting though. The first thing he does is jump off a building just to mock a guy who uses the stairs in an attempt to escape him with a huge booming laugh (also mirrored later on for extra awesomeness.) The fucks he does not give...

He's not actually this huge you understand, the room is just to small to show off his true manliness.

I'm upset that he wasn't on the list. Read the topic and immediately thought of one of the greatest anime characters ever.

I had Armstrong in my head before I got to the topic, I read the list and went "No Armstrong, he's clearly the manliest man in anime, this must be remedied!". True to his reputation, the very second post is Armstrong, the eighth is Armstrong, the eleventh is Armstrong, the fourteenth is Armstrong. I think we all know who the winner is here.

I'm gonna come slightly left of field with this one, whilst Armstrong and Kenshiro are manly... they both lack a quality all true manly men need... MUFFA LUFFIN EYE PATCH YO! as such there can be... only one;

ZARAKI KENPACHI! In a world of super powerful gods battling in the undead, he's about the only person who doesn't use any special attacks beyond: Hit stuff... harder than it hits you.

We don't call this guy Chinese Electric Batman for nothing. =P

Though he happens to be a different kind of manly. One that's more subtle, I'll say.

I'm going to suggest Ladd Russo from Baccano!, but then put my faith in Armstrong. *sparkles*
