So everyone likes Mass Effect from what I can tell, except me. I mean, the dialogue trees are a cool idea and I wish they were applied to a better game, but I really don't like the gameplay, loathe the inventory system and find the story a bit on the unoriginal side. If it helps, I did not care for KotOR either. But I want to know (and yes, I got the idea from the half life thread, sue me) why everybody loves it so much. My view on Mass Effect is the same as it is on Radiohead: I can't understand why such a bland thing with, I'll admit, good ideas, is called the greatest thing since sliced bread. So yeah, stuff.

PS: Wow, 1000 views on my second day here. I feel special.

I love Mass Effect. The story and characters are unique.

But I see what your saying and I respect your opinion.

You don't like the inventory system? It's not like it's unique and screwy.

As for the story, name another story where an ancient civilisation were wiped out by godlike robot spaceships via an elaborate teleportation device?

i enjoyed mass effect because if was one of the few games that felt more like a controlled movie, the games beautiful, and i liked the universe, i didn't see too many cliches so i'd say i loved the game actually.

And I thank you for not being the usual "OMG I LUV MASS EFFECT UR A F@G." Response I usually get when I say I don't like ME.

For me, it was just one of those games where everything gelled so well, resulting in the whole being greater than the sum of (most of) its parts.

I havw faith the sequel will go some way to fixing up anything that was wrong with the original. Not that those faults have stopped me playing it through again, starting recently.

I thought it was good, but not incredible. Too short and repetitive (the side-quest planets especially) to be considered masterful. And the plot was rather easy to predict, not because it was bad, but because Bioware gave away too much of it too early.

So I can see where you're coming from.

Not about Radiohead, though. They're awesome. :p

Inventory seemed a little cluttered at times (Xbox 360 Version), but overall I thought of it as being an acceptable annoyence. I did like the combat, the story is rather good (No, not perfect, but very good by most standards), the Universe setting was impressive although the planet exploration did seem rushed and largely untouched (Supposedly fixed in ME2).

It's not gaming gold, nor should it be treated like a pile of crap, it's a good idea for a game which started off well and can/should only be improveable from then on... the inventory still sucks however.

That takes elements from Halo's and Half Life's stories, in Halo, an ancient civilization far more technologicly(spelling, sorry) advanced than our own is wiped out by a mysterious alien parasite, and in Half Life the Combine take over earth via an advanced portal system linking our world to theirs.

Half Life Alien Invasion+Halo Alien Invasion=Mass Effect Alien Invasion

Those sort of responses tend to appear on other, less sophisticated forums. The Escapist does brilliantly to encourage real discussion.

All I will say is that I plan to marry and have children with Mass Effect and we will name the children the in order Alex, Kevin, Kayla, and Wrex.

We will then get a small cottage in the woods and live our life there until old age...or until I have a affair with Mass Effect 2...ya it's that good

That's your opinion; it's good to have your own opinions and voice them. Because then what's the point of opinions?

Perhaps to elaborate, a lot of people like Mass Effect for the story; that and its respective elements seem to more than make up for whatever dryness or boredom you find in the gameplay, as it relates to the combat, which I personally liked. Though it could be improved upon.

It is sort of the standard "sci-fi aliens and you have to save the galaxy" type story, but it's done really well. The plot is good, the dialogue is good, the gameplay is repetitive and maybe bland compared to other shooters, but it mixes the RPG and Gears of War-shooter elements well. I personally LOVED it after finishing my first playthrough, and I'm honestly just now getting a little bored of it after getting my third character to Level 60. Luckily the new DLC and ME2 are right around the corner.

It's alright, I liked it.

I don't know if I could explain it too well but I had fun with it and that's what counts, I thought the dialogue was amazing it really gave the game the feeling of immersion, that feeling that your decisions meant some thing, I liked how your characters personalities changed according to your actions through out the game.

Unless it's about Halo, or religion, it seems.

I thought they went downhill after "OK Computer", but that's just me.
Actually, I can see that. I try not to be as...zealous as other Radiohead fans...hopefully. The Kid A/Amnesiac era is pretty weird, especially by rock music standards. But through time it grew on me, and some of my favorite songs of theirs come off of those albums. Their last two albums after that I really enjoyed, too.

But that's off-topic. I did enjoy Mass Effect for what it was. And I look forward to the second one.

That's an interesting way of looking at it, but you've got to remember that almost everything has been done at least once somewhere in some form of media. Halo had power armour, the marines in StarShip Troopers had powered armour. Does that make the armour in halo just a copy? I don't think so. They took a vague existing idea and portrayed it in their own vision. It's like reading a different meaning from the same piece of art.
I look at a painting, I see love. Someone else looks at it, they see indifference. Both ideas come from the same source, so does that make them the same? Of course not, love and indifference are opposites.

Man, I got all weird there, didn't I? But you get the point.

What a pointless post. Come on, you have lots of posts, contribute at least a bit.
