I can't believe that people don't think the story isn't original. It may not be bikini samurai (oh wait thats been done) or evil teddy bears f**king up squirrels (oops been done too). Well i guess original is in the eye of the beer holder anyway...

oh and by the way the game was so the shi* that it makes both halo and halflife look like day in day out shooters.

You don't like the inventory system? It's not like it's unique and screwy.

As for the story, name another story where an ancient civilisation were wiped out by godlike robot spaceships via an elaborate teleportation device?
somewhat halo...but less robots and more Other aliens. so ya...good point.

Read my other post in this thread.

Halo and Mass Effect's stories have one thing in common-Space. That's about it.

Though I use this as an example in my "Video Games are on par with movies or television as a form of media" argument I have to say I've played better games. The story is AMAZING and really the only reason I played. The combat kinda sucked but all and it was a better than a lot of other games I've played. The same goes for KotOR. Though the second one was freaking horrible.

I played it. I would have to say that it was a pretty good game, but it wasn't great.

Like other commenters, I liked how it felt like a movie at some points; the story was good, and most of the controls were pretty tight, however some of the gameplay mechanics and AI really didn't work in the end.

It really was a case where the sum of the parts was better than any of the individual pieces. KotR was probably a better game on the whole, but it didn't feel nearly as refined as Mass Effect.

For me, I'm glad that I rented it for the 360 rather than bought the game. I'd definitely say I got my money's worth, but nor would I buy it.

Personally, I think that a lot of the 'hater' crowd were just angry that they played through 20+ hours of story line and they didn't even get to see the blue alien boobies.

It's not the greatest thing since sliced bread (that would be the modern light bulb) but its a pretty dang good RPG that has some entertaining combat implementation (if a bit dull overall) and a deep story. It may not be "teh best game evar!" but its pretty dang good. It's well put together and I like it. Perhaps this type of RPG is just not for you. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go explore a landscape in my futurist tank/rover.

I thought it was a pretty neat game in every way, can't really complain much, except about the Mako.

I hate that thing.

I think Mass Effect is a GREAT game. The inventory system does force you to do a LOT of unnecessary scrolling and the game has LONG load times and lots of graphical glitches/bugs but the game is so endearing and interesting and...FUN that i don't care. Besides, just judging from the fact that they more-or-less "fixed" the inventory system for Mass Effect on PC and the very fact that Mass Effect 2 trailers seem to have fixed a lot of the wonky graphics stuff leads me to believe that Mass Effect 2 will be just as great minus the flaws of the original.

If it helps, I did not care for KotOR either..
Maybe you don't like Western Sci-fi RPG's, as KotOR, KotOR II and Mass Effect are normally used in showcasing that genre of games.
I like the Fallout series, that counts, right?

Funny, the first time I played it, I did not really enjoy it and found the inventory very confusing.

A few months later, I thought, hey why not pick that ol' game up again and give it another try...

*One week of non stop caffeine binging and playing Mass Effect*

I frigging love this game!

Gah these kind of games make me regret getting rid of my xbox.

The constant failures of the hardware make me glad to have a ps3 though.

It's quite good. The acting is on-par with grade A cinema quality stuff, and the storyline feels epic and involving. Far from my favorite game, but a knockout RPG.

I thought it was really overrated, to be honest. The hype made me buy it, but I sold it soon enough that it might as well have been a rental.

This right here is why I rent games that aren't sequels to games I liked. The same thing happened to me with KotOR. I bought it used, played it for a week, and it's been sitting in a bookshelf for the past 3 years.

I... Like it.

It was short and sweet (Atleast the way I played it >.>)

It was fun, hard at times, and it gave me a choice to wipe out an alien civilization and most of all HAVE HOT SEX WITH AN ALIEN CHICK, YEAH!

It seems level design, character design, artistic style, story, characterization, originality and attention to detail bear little weight in your appreciation of games.

I also like the armour design very much. Particularly Tali Zorah nar'Rayyah. Completely covered in an environmental suit, with that lovely hood over her head, a fantastic Israeli-ish accent, the webbed feet and the strangely-shaped legs. Best looking alien ever.

I do agree about the inventory, though.

I had actually stopped playing it for a few weeks after first buying it after getting frustrated by the combat. I went back to it though and toned down the difficulty so the combat wasn't that much of a big deal. It was, like most people the story line and charecters that let me really enjoy it. Then again I love the idea of being a charecter in a novel or game. For the fact it let me feel like I was is reasons enough for me.
That and the cutscene during the fight with Seiren was just amazing. There isn't enough spaceshp combat scenes in games or movies.

I really dislike Radiohead so I can agree with you there anyway.

Mass Effect kicks arse! One of the best games I have ever played, and it makes my coveted list of top 5 games.

I played it for a few hours and I was so disappointed I put it away. I didn't pick it up again until after I beat Assassin's Creed. I went back to my old game and I fell in love with the game all over again. I was on my sixth playthrough before my 360 red ringed on me. The sequel is one of the reasons I put up my damned box.
