Most of the problems you mentioned were definatly ther (tho I disagree about the storyline) but I guess I just got over them while you didn't. IMO, It's one of the best told stories in a video game and the moral choice aspect was handled a lot better than it is in most other games. But if you didn't like it, that okay

P.S. I like Radiohead... That said , they're not THE BEST BAND EVAR!!!1 or anything.

If you come around expecting a shooter then I understand if Mass Effect disappoints you. What I liked about it was not the shooter aspect but rather the talking aspect. It was a pretty well crafted (not saying unique, just polished and well realized) world and you got enough time with your crew to care about them. Storywise it wasn't OMGWTFBBQ epic, but by video game standards it was really good.

I guess it was just a nice change of pace. Most video games set in space are shooters where the story and characters are secondary. This time they really took the setting and centered it.

Really pumped for the sequel. It's going to be interesting to see how they pull off the whole "carrying over" deal. Hopefully we'll see some improved shooting as well ^^

Too short? The game lasts about 30+ hours. Other games in single player last only 8-9 hours so Mass Effect is one of the longest games out there. And plot was easy to predict? You must be clairvoyant or something, because the plot twist caught me and most of my friends really hard
30 hours? Wow, I couldn't get it nearly that long. I am not a fast gamer, either. It took me only 19 hours to finish ME the first time. Granted, I didn't do everything, but I did a lot. For reference, it took me 45 hours to finish KotOR (so I am slow). I don't know, maybe I did something wrong.

*snip*
If you do only the main quests and maybe a side quest here or there 19 hours sounds about right. I've done runs of only the main questline in less then 15 hours so your 19 hours is pretty much spot on. A 100% run of the game does run about 35-40 hours though depending on what difficulty your on and how fast you are.

I really enjoyed the game. The only part I really dislike was the bullshit way you unlock things.

PS: How do you get the little spoilers box so you have to click to see it? I'm rather a noob, despite registering a long time ago, and don't know how to do it.
It's written in the froum help http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/markup_help.php. But you do it typing
and then you put in what you want to say, and close it off by typing /spoiler but in square brackets.

I hope that helps

That could be it. How much is considered 100%? I went to visit almost all the side-quest planets in the MAKO, but there was no way I was going to scan all of those rocks searching for minerals and such. I usually didn't do much on those planets.

That must be why it took so little time. Argh!

EDIT: Thanks, Arrers.

Well technically there isn't even a 100% achievement for the game. You can get the "Completionist" (Complete most of the game) achievment without doing any of the scanning quests.(as long as you do every other quest that is) Games where I do everything but the scanning quests take me about 30ish hours. Thats with me already knowing all of them though. (and skipping through dialogue)

I played it for 5 hours and I couldn't figure out how to change weapons or what I was supposed to do, so I stopped playing.

I made love to the game for hours and hours.
It came naturally.
I played both KoToRs, was familiar with equipment management, and familiar with stats and 3rd person shooters.
The story was captivating and having the fate of my team in my hands, was awesome. Example: I lost my favorite shotgun-toting badass to the a pistol-whip from my so-called "friend", whom I left behind so she could die in a nuclear explosion.

I do agree the inventory was a complete ass of an idea. Hopefully the sequel will change your opinion of the game series.

I love Mass Effect. The story is amazingly well done, as well as the characters. And hell the gameplay isn't all that bad either. Not to mention the soundtrack.

Personally, I loved Mass Effect, and pretty much everything about it. Ive beaten it once, and im on my second time through. I have gone to now planets after the citadel except ones with side quests so far, and im about to hit lvl 50 (im on hard mode) so the game is a little easy, but its really fun, and I liked the story. I respect your opinion though, not everyone will like it.

The story was blatantly copied from the Revelation Space trilogy written by Alastair Reynolds. Thats the only thing I didn't really like about it.
Sure was tasty eye-candy though.

You get out what you put into it. If you just do the story missions without ever talking to somebody, its a very bland game. But if you do the side quests and get to know your crew, the characters really do stand out. The side missions are pretty grate, and some of them are even more epic than some of the actual story missions. I think a lot of people loved the game because you make commander shepard in you image, and he or she still talks, it was one of the first games to have your main character be able to speak, actually speak not just pick a choice out of a list of choices. Another thing that I am really excited about is the fact that you still play as Commander Shepard in Mass Effect 2, and your choices from the first game will effect the 2nd, that's something that hasn't been done on such a scale. In short Mass Effect rocks, and is one of my favorite games of all time. And yes, if I could marry and have children with it I would, because those children would be epic.

i enjoyed mass effect because if was one of the few games that felt more like a controlled movie, the games beautiful, and i liked the universe, i didn't see too many cliches so i'd say i loved the game actually.
I agree with this one hundred percent!

You don't get mass effect... Don't worry, erectile dysfunction is a perfectly treatable disorder-Oh wait! You mean the game... Well, all I can say is that it's a subjective view and not everyone will agree.

Essentially what I'm saying is 'people preferences and their own personal experiences with Mass Effect will mean that not everyone will feel the same way about it'.

I never had a problem with any game's menu, as long as there is one. I did enjoy the game, but I can agree with the sentiment that it's not the hottest thing since a WWE Diva Battle Royal at the centre of the Sun. I think it's because it combines a quality story (for a game) with drastically improved gameplay from Bio Ware's previous titles. Say what you will, but Knights of the Old Republic and its ilk controlled like an MMO on quaaludes.

Actually I think the story is original. How isn't it? I haven't seen any other games with an ancient race getting destroyed by another race of god-like robot aliens that are about to return and f**k your s**t up hard. I didn't think the inventory was great, but it was good and I didn't think it detracted from the game. As for the side-missions... yes, they were repetitive. The characters were great, the story was original, the voice acting was outstanding, and everything had some kind of history or detail to it. I can't wait for the next one to come out.

I personally found it to be a pretty above average game.

Very enjoyable, and I can't wait for Mass Effect 2.
