Ah, melo-death. The more melodic, yet the more screamy kind of metal. This thread has two purposes.
1. I'm on the hunt for some fresh music. Needing some new melo-death after listening to nothing but In Flames and Children of Bodom. So what's your recommendation. Preferably some unknown gems if you know them, like Engel or Gardenian.
2. A little more user-friendly purpose; what is your opinion on melodic death metal? Is it still just a bunch of screaming, or is it the most god-like genre there is? You tell me. I personally love it, it's the best stuff I know since I started listening to In Flames.

EDIT: For those who are interested, here's the video for the new song by Engel. They are a small melo-death band with members from In Flames, Headplate, Gardenian and such. Thought you might like it.

A lot of In Flames is quality and COB have like one good song, but I'm not a huge fan of the genre, I prefer more progressive stuff.

But check out At The Gates, their pretty decent.

I've heard their album Slaughter of The Soul, which I heard is their A-game, like the Jester Race to In Flames and The Gallery to Dark Tranquillity (which I love). It's pretty good, but not really my thing.

One of the few melodic death metal (or just metal bands in general) I listen to. Even then it's still a bit of a guilty pleasure mind you...

I dig this very much. Very early In Flames-ish. :)

My two cents: Skyfire!

Edit: also, I'll be watching this thread like a hawk.

I'm not really sure I used to like it a lot but then I started teetering over to black metal I only really kept listening to Amon Amarth, COB and later Arch Enemy. The gothenburg sound only work for me when sweden doesn't do it because it sounds really unoriginal to me (Not America because then we get abominations like the Black Dahlia Murder). I like black metal more these days because it has a more diverse sound. (Example - the band Solstafir) Though I still like death metal bands such as Death, COB, Amon Amarth, Necrophagist, Cannibal Corpse (At times), Nocturnus and Opeth.

Try Kalmah, they're pretty good. I'm not too into Melo-Death - I'm more of a Death/Thrash, Black/Thrash, or pure Death or Black metal person.

You can also try Carcass as their later stuff (Heartwork and Swansong) are melodic.

Melodeath bands to listen to: Insomnium, Omnium Gatherum, Arch Enemy, At The Gates, Death, later Carcass...

I don't really like melodic death metal all that much. I liked it when it was vaguely new to me (2002-2006 or so), but I just get bored of it really easily. Still, the best bands do tend to be rather good.

Melo-death is awesome.

Try The Absence, Kalmah, Disarmonia Mundi, Mors Principium Est, Quo Vadis, Under Threat, Woe Of Tyrants, Blackguard, Dark Tranquillity, and I guess Equilibrium even if its pretty folky.

Finish it Tom!

I Guess the closest i've heard was Gojira, they are a french heavy metal band i really don't know if they are what you call melodic tho. They were decent i heard them live opening for metallica.

I would give Opeth a very good shot, they are the best progressive metal that you will likely find. One of a kind awesomeness!

I'm pretty sure Death isn't melodeath metal. They were normal death metal in their early albums techdeath in the middle and progressive metal in the end.

Go Chuck Schuldiner.

Outside of In Flames and COB the only melodeathish band I listen to is DevilDriver, but they're more groove metal with some melodic influence...
