Melodeath bands to listen to: Insomnium, Omnium Gatherum, Arch Enemy, At The Gates, Death, later Carcass...

I don't really like melodic death metal all that much. I liked it when it was vaguely new to me (2002-2006 or so), but I just get bored of it really easily. Still, the best bands do tend to be rather good.
I'm pretty sure Death isn't melodeath metal. They were normal death metal in their early albums techdeath in the middle and progressive metal in the end.

Go Chuck Schuldiner.

Easily Kalmah. Easily.

But still, Folk Metal is for the cool kids.
Agalloch and Finntroll ftw!
Both huge winners for sure. I'm more an Ensiferum / SuidAkra man myself.

It's melodic and it's death metal therefore it's melodic death metal, in the broadest sense.

Also Agalloch aren't folk metal.

Melo-death is awesome.

Try The Absence, Kalmah, Disarmonia Mundi, Mors Principium Est, Quo Vadis, Under Threat, Woe Of Tyrants, Blackguard, Dark Tranquillity, and I guess Equilibrium even if its pretty folky.

Finish it Tom!
That was a lot. I'll try to look it all through.

Yeah, melodeath is awesome.

Its (usually) pretty fast and heavy, but not sacrificing melody in the sake of brutallity.

Here are some of my favourite melodeath bands:

Insomnium (totaly awesome, melodeath at its best)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEd04x70AOo

Noumena (sound a lot like Insomnium, or Insomnium sounds a lot like Noumena, i dunno :p)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWxMIMe18VQ

Mors Principium Est
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKuzhIQ_wNE

Dark Tranquillity
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Cx0WMH24J0&

Eluveitie (one may argue that this is folk metal)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iijKLHCQw5o&feature=fvst

Disarmonia Mundi
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYgVtN-rWiA

Before the dawn
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTeMAE9vfxU

In Flames
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CffJeVSAJk8

Maybe I left something out, dunno. These are melodeath bands I like the most, maybe you'll like some of them.

Though its not my absolute favourite (Groove metal ftw!) I really like melo-death metal. Like In Flames, Scar Symmetry, Children of Bodom (though they're quite hit-and-miss for me), Divine Heresy, Sacrifist and Warthane

I wouldn't call Opeth Melo-Death really, but I still love them.

Not a huge fan of Melo-Death anymore, with the exception of Dark Tranquillity, whom are still going strong, and is actually better than ever in my opinion.

In Flames took a nose-dive into shit creek after Clayman (even if I kind of enjoy Soundtrack To Your Escape). I completely despise Come Clarity and the album after that. I miss the Whoracle days I grew up with. =(

Semi-OT: Bring the real death metal! Like Nile! ;)

Most older fans of In Flames say that, which makes sense because they're style chance dramatically. I really like Come Clarity, because that was the first one I listened to.

Soilwork is awesome. Scar Symmetry as well, if you ignore Dark Matter Dimensions.
I'm quite sure Opeth doesn't count as melodic death metal, even though they're great. I cant think of any more bands of the top of my head at the moment, though I have loads of different bands lying somewhere on my harddisks. I'll post them if I bother to look through it.

Opeth <3 In Flames <3 Bodom <3

That's about it for melodic death metal, although Opeth is more Prog death metal.

No they're really not death at all. I don't really think much of Melo-Death; that Gothenburg sound just irritates me, it has to be Death Metal with melody and not just some sort of metalcore with death growls.

Well, if you're looking for a REAL gem, I'd recommend Virus by Hypocrisy. The songrwiting is brilliant, very accecible yet complex and interesting. It's a very nice Melodic-, Death-, Blackmetal crossover and one of my favourite metal albums of all time.
You should definitely check it out! Hell, everyone should!

Melo-death, eh?

Ehh. I've always been a tech death metal kind of guy but I really don't mind The Black Dahlia Murder.

Melo-death is okay.

I'm more into old school metal or thrash metal, but I do like Children of Bodom and some albums by In Flames, along with occasionally listening to bands like Amon Amarth.

The main problem I have with melo-death is that there seems to be an abundance of new melo-death bands (at least here in Finland), which sound all the same to me. I mean, yeah nice that they have decent production, skilled musicians and stuff, but when I listen to them, I almost immediately forget most of their songs, as they are similar to what dozen other melo-death bands have done. Also, in many songs the switching from growling to clean voice works well, but now all the new melo-death bands do this in every song.

Early Opeth.

I think...
I don't really count them as melo-death, they're too soft.
Lol they are much more technical than Inflames( who are now sellout alt metal) and Bodom (who are now sellout metalcore). Also Opeth in their first 2 albums were similiar to other melodeath bands, esspecially when the did the guitar harmonising thing. Also if you want heavy opeth, you should check out My Arms Your Hearse.

Also, almost every Melodic Death Metal band plain sucks, they are often predictable, sellout, and often have turned to Alternative Metal or Metalcore.( Such as Soilwork, Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity) And now people who dont know much about the genre itself, label metalcore and alt bands as Death Metal, its retarded.

However At The Gates rules, esspecially the first The Red In The Sky Is Ours. EDIT: and Early In Flames and Early Dark Tranquillity is pretty cool.

There are also a few good not so well known melodeath bands, which i cant remember.

I think Bodom however is closer to Power Metal than Death Metal.
Sorry, but I like that kind of melo-death. I love DT and Soilwork. And really? You compare Bodom to power-metal. Power-metal is music like Dragonforce, Sabaton, Sonata Arctica. (Althought those bands are awesome) Bodom doesn't come close to that genre.

I agree with you in that sense of purpose was shit, but I still dig come clarity, it was an interesting endeavour into a more mainstream style, so I wouldn't hold it against them if it didn't stick to their status quo. And despite how awesome Clayman was, I felt Ander's voice was over synthesized in that album (Seriously, he just sung each song 4 times, each in a different way and played them over each other...)

Yes I have, I've listened to a few albums my friend lent me; didn't think anything of them. There are no elements of Death Metal in their music apart from growls now and then - their riffs aren't anything like Death Metal and quite frankly, they're boring. There's nothing interesting in their music.
