Yes I have, I've listened to a few albums my friend lent me; didn't think anything of them. There are no elements of Death Metal in their music apart from growls now and then - their riffs aren't anything like Death Metal and quite frankly, they're boring. There's nothing interesting in their music.
Well, fair enough, there's no arguing to do then :p I really enjoy their music personally

I agree with you in that sense of purpose was shit, but I still dig come clarity, it was an interesting endeavour into a more mainstream style, so I wouldn't hold it against them if it didn't stick to their status quo. And despite how awesome Clayman was, I felt Ander's voice was over synthesized in that album (Seriously, he just sung each song 4 times, each in a different way and played them over each other...)
I haven't listened to A Sense of Purpose, so can't comment there.

Our difference in opinion about Come Clarity might turn this thread into a flame war, if we bait the trolls enough, so I'll leave that well alone too. =)

On the topic of Clayman, I agree, I prefer his old style of vocals as well. I don't think he completely lost it, seeing how he sings the chorus of F(r)iend live, with the growl instead of the half-crappy shriek.
That being said, I don't dislike all kinds of shrieking. Devin Townsend and Chuck Schuldiner are two examples of wicked good shriek-type vocals. I just can't stand the mainstream shrieking style that a lot of bands incorporate nowadays. In Flames having turned into one, sadly.

Soilwork <3

Cool thread brah
I was this close to killing someone for the lack of Soilwork in this thread, but thankfully you arrived. Soilwork kicks fucking ass. :)
Ahahaha yeah man to true! How could there be Melo Death without that bald headed god?!

Melo-death is awesome.

Try The Absence, Kalmah, Disarmonia Mundi, Mors Principium Est, Quo Vadis, Under Threat, Woe Of Tyrants, Blackguard, Dark Tranquillity, and I guess Equilibrium even if its pretty folky.

Finish it Tom!
Right, here I go. (I'm dissapointed that DT is so far down that list though)

Amon Amarth, Anata, Anterior, The Arcane Order, Arch Enemy, Archons, Arsis, At The Gates, The Black Dahlia Murder, Dark Age, Darkest Hour, Death, Ensiferum, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, Himsa, Hypocrisy, Into Eternity, Lamb of God, Nightrage, Norther, Omnium Gatherum, Prey for Nothing, Scar Symmetry, Zonaria.

Am I doing it right?

There are a few groups that fit into this category (or feature elements in common) that I sort of like, but for the most part I stick to power metal, gothic metal, or symphonic metal, with a few doom, folk, black and prog metal bands thrown in for variety.

Growling/Screaming isn't a deal breaker, but I almost never find myself thinking that "What this song needs is more growling!" - for the most part I'm simply putting up with it because the rest of the music is still awesome.

No they're really not death at all. I don't really think much of Melo-Death; that Gothenburg sound just irritates me, it has to be Death Metal with melody and not just some sort of metalcore with death growls.
What are you talking about, have you heard any of Opeth's work? :S

A few?

Opeth is pretty diverse with it's music so do you mind sharing exactly what albums you listened to?

I refuse to believe someone can dislike Opeth.
They're just too awesome.

Agalloch (Not quite Melodeath, but worth mentioning because they border on the genre)
Daylight dies (a bit more of a doom metal feel, I enjoy their first album immensely)
The Morningside (some more doom influence)
November's Doom (More Doom influence too)
October Tide (Lighter on the Doom influences, side project of Mike Akerfeldt of Opeth and Jonas Renskee of Katatonia)
Sculptured (More Avant-garde influence, side project of Don Anderson of Agalloch)
Septic Flesh (Pretty good stuff, has a pretty epic feel)

Not too much to add to this list, ask me about shoegaze or post rock and I'm your guy.

In Flames, though a bit overrated.
Scar Symmetry, as Fellwarden mentioned, excluding Dark Matter Dimensions (which is 'meh').
Soilwork, I just love them.
There's probably some more, I'm just busy doing nature science homework now.
