I go back and forth between inverting and not-inverting. For a long time I did not invert, until I played a flight sim game, in which the controls were automatically inverted. Having got used to inverted controls, I then inverted the Y axis for a straight 10 years. Until Red Dead Redemption made it impossible to invert ONLY the Y axis, so I had to learn to play with uninverted controls. Now, I can't stand inverted Y axis again. I think I'll stick to not-inverted anything from now on.

There's no "correct" way to do it. It all comes down to personal preference.
Sure there is, down = down and up = up. Anything else might be functional, and even preferable for many, but anything where the directions do not match is not correct.
Possibly, but as Charlie Brooker recently said on this very topic, "The analog stick is like your head. You pull back to look up, you push forward to look down."

I can't find the original article but it was a discussion on this topic between him and Dara O Briain.

And it's true. When you think about it, you don't push "up" on an analog stick, you push "forward".

But yeah, I get what you're saying. And my friend constantly picks me up on it whenever I change my settings to inverted. But like I said, it all comes down to preference.
i absolutely hate that arguement, anytime someone brings that up they never ever flip the horizontal axis then, which is complete bullshit and opposite of that reason (not at you, just the person you were quoting from in the discussion) brought up.

If your going to flip, then flip them both for logics sake, if your going to flip one, fine, awesome, personal preference, but don't try to throw logic at me with it
OK, lets not get carried away with this!

As a point of interest, I did used to play with both axis' inverted. I went through the whole of Batman:Arkham Asylam like that. But when I got Mass Effect, I almost had to give up on it, because it doesn't have an option for inverting the x-axis. So I went back and played through B:AA for a week or so, without x inverted, to try and get used to the controls.

And that's the problem. Most games allow you to invert the y-axis, bbut I've only seen a handful that allow you to do the same to the x-axis.

I'm sure if I wanted to, I could re-train myself to use non-inverted controls. But I like playing the way I do. And as long as the games I want to play allow me to invert the y-axis, I shall play them like that.
that's fine, it's your preference, like i said however fits you best, awesome, cool

i just hate when people try to use logic in that situation trying to tell me im wrong and that way is best, that's the only thing that will irk at me

I used to invert.

But now...I like my aim to go UP when I push the stick UP! Unless it's something like starfox. THEN, the inverted axis works.

haha say whaaaa?

that may have came out a bit misleading, whatever preference you have is fine for controls, awesome, but if people try to use logic to try and say the default way is wrong, i get irked about it.

is that better? or am i still this hamburger killer person?

I think you're misunderstanding; the logic doesn't make you wrong or me (as I like inverted) right, it's there to serve as the reason that inverters such as myself tend to prefer that setup. Similarly the "moving the reticule" rational also serves as solid logic to prefer not inverting, but that's not the most comfortable to me.

I think the fact that the word "argument" was used at all here has caused a lot of misconception. There's no argument to be had, it's a personal preference that can't be changed through any amount of reasoning.

In any case, I agree with a post mentioned near the beginning; In first person, I'm controlling the head, and I move it forward to look down, and backward to move up. (y-axis only inverted) When it's third person, I'm controlling the camera behind the person, and it moves accordingly. (both axes inverted)

While I don't play a lot of FPSs, I prefer to have the camera not inverted.

But what really annoys me is when [Inverted is the default, especially if](<-would like to cross out, can anyone tell me how?) the menus refer to inverted as normal and not inverted as inverted.

Oh that's better. But I still like the sound of this "hamburger killer". Sounds like some kind of colorful criminal. Does he only murder people at fast food stands? Does he leave his victims looking like hamburger? Maybe he's on a quixotic quest against fast food? Is it like the hamburger helper's arch nemesis? The mind boggles.

On PC, I'll never invert, but on console, I can't function without my y-axis flipped. It's how I learned to play. I've always thought of it as the stick controlling the point between your eyes.

I was semi distracted, is your avatar a chick elbowing the shit out of some guys shit? just curious...

and anyways, hamburger killer does sound like an awesome "captain underpants" kind of comic book villain, and i'd like to think he is bias in the fact towards fast food chains mostly, as the meat is fake cheap knock offs of "the real stuff" and isn't handled with "care" like he is,so he is irked about such things. When he attacks victims he does it like this but with their fake fast food stuff they are having:

Why yes. Yes it is actually. You're the first person to stop and ask.

I like the way you think sir, and as I'd never seen these ads before I thank you for that.

I've been using aircraft style controls for mouse free look since Quake in 1996 (Yes I know that Marathon was first, but I didn't have a Mac) and proper controls for flight with a joystick a long time before that. I can't remember what the default was for Quake but inverted Y has always "felt" more natural to me. Probably all the F-15 Strike Eagle i played on the Commodore 64. Twenty four years of FPSs in, I am never going to change now.

I'm a bit too lazy to do the fancy breaking up of the quoting right now, so i'll just say i'm surprised about your avatar thing, and what show is that from? just curious, might have to check it out.

hah your welcome, a friend showed me those a couple months ago, I can't believe awesome commercials like those don't happen over here in the US =\ if they do they are banned before they see the light of day.

Inverted makes some kind of sense if you use a gamepad, as it means that you're moving the analogue stick as you would move your neck.
That?s the way I?ve always felt. Some people say that up should mean up and down should mean down but at the same time I never see gamers with the pad straight up in front of their face so that the stick does wiggle up and down. Maybe if I played that way, I wouldn?t invert.

That is from a little show called Spice and Wolf. Which is actually on Netflix. Loved it myself, not going to be for everyone though. Fair warning. If you like it, well that's great. If you don't then I deny any connection to it, like it was a CIA operative. The show is not your typical anime, I'll leave it at that.

It delights me to no end that somewhere out there, foreign people are every bit as weird and ingenious as we are. I could easily see this sort of thing as a bit on late night with Conan O' Brien, and yet here it is as a commercial for Egyptian cheese. Hilarious commercials. Really loved the one where he dumps out the shopping cart. When we cut to the panda-cam I burst out laughing. And they say senses of humor don't translate. Pffft. What I wanna know is who picked out the song, lol. Anyhow yeah, thanks again man.

and your very welcome, for a while i even had the "maytellaheshla" part as my text ringer (my friends would laugh when they heard it, everyone else had a massive "wtf..")
