If it's a game like Zelda or Final Fantasy I use the stock names.
If it's a game like fallout or another more in depth role play I'll make up just some name.
Though if it's pokemon I'll use my own name.

Depends entirely on the game.
If it's something like Mass Effect, I go for serious.
If it's something like Pokemon, I go for silly.
I tend to prefer being silly, though. I'm not good at thinking up serious names.

Mostly stock (helps me remember the character's name when discussing the game), sometimes a variation of the stock (like Barry instead of Barrett). But on occasion I randomize (healers I ironically dub Chernobyl, female ninjas I dub Molly or Iona, weak or cowardly characters I dub Marty).

I tried my nickname (Dani) in WoW 2 years ago & it didn't work so I threw in an H and got Dahni.
So it was technically random, at the time, but somehow my character name ended up becoming my name outside of games.

Usually the same names, especially in RPGS:

Elf - Kirion Deschain
Human - Arden Carrick

Once had a Vault Dweller named Lazarus, I miss him.

Do enjoy bland names too sometimes. Might restart Mass Effect and call him Geoffrey Shepherd. Has a ring to it.

If they have a set name (i.e. most Final Fantasy protagonists) I'll use it, but if there isn't I tend to name my characters after other video game characters. I'm not creative enough to come up with my own silly names. >:

It depends on my mood, usually I name them random names. Rarely my own, but silly always are there for kicks.

If it's Pokemon
I'll do band names (ie Aerosmith for Pidgey)
funny names (ie fuckurself [Go! Fuckurself])
or completely random

I named that one BEEEEEEEESSSSS!

I once named my Earthbound characters. It went thusly:

Ness -> This
Paula -> Smells
Jeff -> Like
Poo -> Poo

The characters' stat bars are lined up at the bottom of the screen. Naturally the game got more hilarious as time went on.

In Wind Waker I named Link You Ass, so everybody would be insulting him.

I Usually put my own name. But in Zelda games I always have Link. I accidently put LinK one time so I kept it for all my games from then on.

I'll give some examples from my FO3 and Oblivion accounts...

Fallout 3:
Sean Glenanne (See if anyone gets the reference)
Admiral Dynamite
Damien McTyler
Vince Westen
Wise Cracker
Taylor Martin

Oblivion:
Regulus
Da'mari
Robin Hood
Jack O'Lantern

Some silly, some serious.

It depends on the game. In Final Fantasy I go with the stock names. In games like Fallout 3 I tend to use my usual ID (Jboking) or my second usual (sage). In pokemon games and Zelda games I have been known to go with silly names(I say).

I give my character all sorts of names. I try to steer clear of obviously intimidating names, as I find them juvenile. I usually use realistic names that fit with the times.

And then there is my character "Paddy McIrish" which is just silly (and slightly offensive)
