I think old weapons are a lot more creative. Today it's all guns just slightly different than the last type and they don't differ a whole lot in appearance. But 300 years ago when you had 7ft claymores with detachable maces, that was just epic.
I'd say it's the other way around. From weapons that use sound or electricity, or guns that can shoot around corners, or robotic snake bombs, today's weapons are far more creative.
New weapons are more practical. But old ones are o-so-intimidating. I'd fear a guy with a good arsenal of swords, and who looks like he can use them, more than one with a pistol or a rifle.
And a pierced body gives a bigger statement than a shot one.
