Custom class: I usually go for a paladin like built, concentrating on beeing an armored melee fighter with a few spells to throw at enemies while charging.

At the moment a hammer wielding orc with summons.

Last time a sneaky high elf with blades, lots of magic and a bow.

Usually I create my own custome class based around melee/light armor with a dash of Marksman/Destruction
If I get tired of my current class or character, but dont want to create a brand new one, I usually just change it via mods or the ingame console

I go for a custom class, a mix of melee and mage, always promising myself I'll use mostly magic. Then I leave the sewers and start hitting things with a longsword til I've beaten the game. It's so much simpler. I've never once used range, as I don't see the point in a skill that only lets you kill things if you have enough money to buy more things to kill them with.

I always revert to an Argonian stealth character or tank. Why have nightvision when you can BREATHE UNDERWATER? And I fall into my FPS state of mind and go Marksman, because bow-sniping is AWESOME.

If you can't see the screen, be a cheapskate and turn your brightness up. Or use a torch like a manly man.

Marksman: Used for 3X critical damage
Blade: Used as weapon after sneak attack.
Alchemy: Yum. Potions.
Restoration: Yum. Light.
Conjuration: Attack my minion!

I think that's it.

I custom make my classes. The game just doesn't offer good defaults. But Agility based classes are game-breakingly overpowered anyway. A sneak attack bow hit is roughly 2x, 4x, 6x, and I think even 8x damage on a hit. Combine with Illusion magic Chameleon enchanted armor and easy mode has a new meaning.

My current custom class is a light armored melee character with plenty of mobility and some spells. Heavy armor is cool and all, but everything in the game except for a mudcrab can outrun you.

CUSTOM CLASS! the hero:
breton, M
strength
magic
mage starsign

swords
block
destruction
illusion(ESSENTIAL!)
conjuration(NOT ESSENTIAL, BUT AWESOME!)
sneak
er.... acrobatics, alteration(?)

has enough strength, agility and endurance to make up for combat, and still has a decent magic skill, and a fairly high amount of mana. you can basically finish all the guild quests easily with this setup.

also, i normally have no idea what i'd want for a 7th skill, so i normally say 'screw it' and just use either alteration or acrobatics

The account that I actually completed the game with was an Orc specialising in armoury, blunt and heavy armour because I am an unimaginative, damage-soaking thicky.

I did try to be a sneaky Wood Elf with the usual bow and sneak skills but I found I died in the arena and in Oblivion gates faster than an old man prone to heart attacks in an alarm clock factory. I also tried being a warrior-mage High Elf but I felt your character is usually pretty weak if you don't specialise in one particular field.

No doubt when Skyrim I will make a similar choice.

the premade classes are garbage. i always do a warrior/thief build, with a little bit of restoration magic, just for healing

I generally go with a sort of Battle-mage style class because at the start of the game I find it impossible to choose between stabbing things or setting them on fire.

I made a sort of custom class that is mostly an Elderich Knight with more focus on magic, and less on weapons. It is mostly full out DPS rather than defensive spells though.

I use a custom class that has: Restoration, Alteration, Acrobatics, Athletics, Block, Heavy Armor, and Armorer. As you can see it's a completely defensively minded class, I don't have much in the way of attack, but maaaan can I survive a lot of shit.

I play different classes on different playthroughs.
First I played the warior class, then mage, then assassin.
But everytime I become the leader of every guild.

I was actually a pure awesome mage. No weapons, no armor, no anything else. Just blasted and healed and cursed and frightened and hypnotized and paralyzed and burned and freezed and electrocuted etc the everliving shit out of all who dare cross paths with the mighty Owlslayer! (cue evil laugh)
But it was fun, in my opinion, to try to stay on one single path. And playing with spells is always fun.
My favorite was paralyze, range was maxed and duration was 1 second. Then made everyone in a city run after me, and used it. Time stopped, yay! And then i was out of mana and they killed me...

I was what I refer to as a battlemage who steals everything that isn't nailed down through the usage of magic.

I fought with equal amounts sword & shield, and spells. I had a pretty good ice-based DoT, as well as a straight forward fireball attack.

But then I also had my lockpick spell, my super chameleon spell, plus hundreds of potions thanks to my super alchemy skillz. I broke into every house, stole everything I wanted, backstabbed when I needed to. I seriously couldn't pick a dedicated class if I tried, but I felt like a total badass for it.
