I'm not, and I probably won't become one - sure, I won't need my organs, but the idea of my body being treated like some sort of organ farm kind of turns me off. The lack of control that I have over what goes to who is another thing that I have a problem with.

I'm not yet, but only because I'm too young.

I take the klingon approach to bodies after death. Nothing of the person left, why care about it?

Might as well let someone else use the meat.

No. Not yet at least. Mainly because:
A) I'm too young.
B) It's one of those things that my mother will definitely hate discussing and I won't be able to get around to. :p
How old are you guys & where are you from?
(I'd look on your profiles but my browser gets pissy)
Because as far as I'm aware, the age for declaring consent to organ donation is pretty low.
Fifteen, America.
I've heard you can sign up when you get your drivers license (16 if I remember right), but I may very well be wrong.

wow, you're not allowed to make that decision alone until you're 18? that's insane.
12 year olds are allowed to declare consent over here without even mentioning it to their parents.
I was just turned 16 when I signed up. I thought it was something like 16 everywhere.
In the US, most everything you do under 18 requires parental approval :V

Honestly, I don't think it's really that enforced. For me, at 16, there was a tickybox on the form I filled out for my license; my parents didn't even need to sign off on it.

Thank you.

But I'm sure I'm still not able to get permission. My mom would just freak out if I even hint at the idea.
Haha, yeah, my parents weren't exactly thrilled, despite being organ donors themselves; something about their precious baby girl getting carved up like a dead cow at the butcher's.

Yup, the little pink dot thing on my license says so. So um...yes good for that.

Oh um why? Uh...why not? If im dead im certainly not using them.
This is my thought, unless I can afford to have my ashes sent to the moon, I'm donating the rest of the unused parts of my body to science.

Exactly.
You can't entirely blame them, though. They're still kinda stuck with that protective parent mentality.

I am a super donor. I donate blood regularly, as well as if I die, all organs, skin, eyes and such will be used to help others. I won't need them anymore.

Having someone take your bits once you are gone shouldn't matter too much, they can't make you more dead, and all they can do is let others live.

I'm not an organ donor by choice.

I have but one flimsy, unsupported rumor that keeps me from donating my remains: A friend of mine that used to work in the EMT field told me that the triage of care protocols place victims that are organ donors below those that don't donate organs. The logic behind that claim is that non-donors are useless when dead, they're just corpses. Donors, however might be able to save others if they don't survive.

I don't know where in the process of emergency care this occurs, be it first responders, ambulance crew, or surgeons in the ER. But if there's some chance that my life is given less consideration because my remains may help others after I'm dead, then sorry bro no deal. There's enough humans on the earth dying left and right anyways. Whatever sacrifice I can provide on an individual basis means little in the grand scheme of things.

I am an organ donor, they can have everything where I'm concerned. I'm a med student, and I've seen how a new organ can change someone's life around (heart, kidney, and corneas, for example), so if anything ever happens to me, but my organs are still good, I hope they can help someone else.

I don't think I can be an organ donor for the same reason I can't give blood: I lived in England during the Mad Cow period.

If I could, then yes, I would donate my organs if I was going to die with no hope for my survival (hooray for tautology!) But if I were in a coma or something, then no, I wouldn't want to.

If I ever come out of it, I'd like to have my insides still intact, thank you.

Everything except my eyes. You can take everything else, my skin and organs, but leave my damn eyes. Aside from finding it creepy, I want my real eyes with me when I die.

The organ donor lady got a little miffed when I said everything but my eyes. They're mine, damnit. You're already getting the rest of my insides.
I don't think they can't use more than the thin outer layer from your eyes (the cornea). They certainly can't pop whole eyes into someone elses face. :) My mom has had two operations where she received corneas from donors, giving her acceptable sight despite an eye-disease.

Anyway, your demand to keep them is completely fair of course, you're giving everything else. :)

As for me, yes I'm an organ donor, and have been a blood donor since I was able to about 4 years ago.

Damn, that's harsh. If you end up on a hospital bed urgently needing an organ, don't complain if there are no organ to save your life.

My girlfriend's brother lost the function of his kidneys when he was 18, and just recently got one, at 30 years of age, mostly because people are selfish or distrust the system. So yeah, that's over a decade of his best years where he couldn't get a proper education or carreer because of medical reasons and the enormous time spent in dialysis-machines.

No I'm not an organ donor. Why? Because I haven't signed myself up for it yet (underaged), but I will, because I'm not going to use my liver, heart, kidneys, stomach, lungs, eyes, tounge, etc when I've kicked the bucket.

If so, why? If not, why not?
If you want to be an organ donor, why aren't you one already?
Technically I'm not a registered organ donor, but in Australia that holds little sway, basically family have the last say in what happens to the body regardless of the person's wishes.

But my father has told me that he would give all my organs if I was brain dead, because while he would be very sad, I would get to save several lives and live on through those people and my gift.

I would never give my body for science though, which is especially selfish as being a medical student I have gotten the chance to study with cadavers, I just didn't like it, it's viking funeral all the way for me.

Khitten said:
No. Nor will I ever be. I do not want some doc to take a little too long to help me because my organs could save X many others.
Also they are my parts. My body. I am not some friggin toy to chop and change parts with. There is even the fact that I do not want my remains given to med students to piss around with.
When I die I do not want a autopsy or to be embalmed. Just set me on fire and be done with it.
Also if they did make organ donation a opt out thing I would be pissed off. Unless my friends and family deliberately state that they want to donate then I would cause as many hassles as I could just to delay it till their organs are not usable any more.
Dude...

So there's a difference between giving organs and being used for science, as I established above. Doctors don't just let you die for your organs its against all of the codes of ethics and in fact there is a huge amount of tests and procedures they have to go through to establish you are dead before they can take your organs.

You can help/save dozens of people.

If it hasn't already been done

I figure I'm doing enough damage to my organs as possible so if someone had the opportunity to take them it wouldn't really be worth their time so no, I am not a donor.

I have my organs available and I donate blood platletes and blood plasma each month, you you did some research on what these blood components can do, you would be blown away.
if you have known anyone with major surgery, a serious accident, cancer or thousands of diseases. you might see how it should be part of every healthy persons life. there is a 99% chance that at sometime in your life a donation as simple as blood will save someone you know.

Yep. I plan to be a blood donor too.

While we're talking about it, sort of, does anyone know why gay people can't donate blood? And does anyone know if it applies to bisexual people?
Wait, what? What kind of backwards fascist hellhole do you live in?

On topic, I am indeed a donor, I have no use for my earthly remains when I've passed on and I'm a big fan of recycling

I am not an organ donor. I want to be, but I don't know where to sign up...
So, it is just a matter of time.
Then others will be infected through the organs they get from me...
Mwahahahahaha!
