I am pretty sure in some wars the soldiers ditched their own weapons in favour of the enemies for reliability reasons. If I recall in Vietnam, American soldiers threw away their M-16 rifles and used AK-47s from dead Vietnamese soldiers.

And according to Mikhail Kalashnikov in 2006, soldiers in Iraq were using using AK-47s in preference to the standard-issue M-16...

So I guess it happens in real life, so why not in a game?

The germans also dumped the MP-40 for the Russian's PPSh when they could, I believe.

I didn't know about that, but it makes sense I guess.
