Nope, they're still around. And if I'm asking for something that would explicitly benefit me, and would require them to go out of their way to help, I think that a please should be offered.
Why? What does the word "please" really do anyway?

I would much rather it be conveyed through a humble and pleasant action/tone, seriously, its the age old thing of actions over words.

I don't need a please. Clearly you are an idiot and can't do this yourself.

I'd kick her in the crotch, and if she didn't double over in pain, I would say:

"DAMN! I was like 100% SURE you were a rude cross-dressing man-whore!"

Usually my 'heartfelt honest requests' have a please in them anyway. It pays to be polite you know.

Sadly my Mom is like this. It makes my insides burn as I don't think there's any need for a please if its spoken in a polite/neutral-happy tone.

I've always said please out of habit, same with thank-you... :D

Aslong as I get a thank you I'm fine, don't mind no pleases.

But the photoshop room door opener lady was rather rude in not doing anything until you said please :/ cowbag

A sarcastic please isn't really a please at all in my opinion. If the person that asks you to say it was really that bothered about it meaning something, instead of just following social 'norms', they'd see this. Someone saying something because they have to just devalues it.
Think about kids, when they're forced to say sorry. They'll say it and that means things're technically covered, but they don't mean it. So what was the point in making them say it?
It's the same thing here.

Stupid people form olden times, coming here and taking our jobs. Someone oughta do something about it!
DEY TUK URR JUUBZZ!

honestly though, if the question is delivered with a sincere underlying request for help, rather than taking the help for granted then I don't see the problem, "could I borrow you for a second" sounds a hell of a lot like please to me, so I don't see the problem with it!

Also, before you post, yes, yes I'm very aware that some of you are going to go on about how you don't help your fellow man because at all you hate them all. Yes, we're all very impressed at your fake misanthropy that you've put on so a bunch of strangers will think you're cool. Now, just once, try acting like a grown up. For me. Please.
I love you.

On topic, the people that do that, for the most part, just enjoy being difficult because they're actually needed for something, and they want to make people jump through hoops before they'll relinquish that which they're withholding. It's an ego trip of the most basic kind: when the lowly, bitter* janitor working a thankless job has the opportunity to lord something over a privileged student, you'd better believe they're going to do it.

[small]*This here be the operative word. For the most part, janitors are really cool people, and are far from "lowly". It's just that when you find one who is (say it with me now) bitter about where they are, you're going to get a situation like OP's.[/small]

If you're not that close or familiar with the person, I think the informal tone of your request may have been inappropriate. She may have been offended that you wanted to "borrow her". That's a very casual and informal phrase which may have implied that you didn't think much of her as a person.

Who knows~ I probably would have appreciated a 'please' if I were in her position, but at the same time I don't think I would have cared If didn't get one.

otherwise, maybe the next time you need something from her you should pretend you're on the verge of tears or something LOL

Normally I think I say please without thinking about it, but pleasant words from the person will usually get me off my fat ass.

"Please" is for children requesting to stay out late and for boyfriends who have been caught cheating. Please is not for adults. The OP REQUESTED that the door be opened, he didn't demand. Upon gaining entry, I would have been tempted to wish the lady well in getting laid as soon as possible, the old *****.

Well... I'm fairly polite (having been raised by them 'olden people' :p ), but yes. I hate human beings too.

This was the most true and entertaining paragraph I have ever read in the Escapist forums.
I've gotta agree there, I do get tired with all the "Its cool to hate everyone" attitudes we get around here!

OT: Sounds like you did everything in a polte and friendly manner, there was really no need for her to demand a 'please' from you.
