I tend not to focus on a particular type of pokemon, but my favorite types are psychic and poison. I'm a very DOT kind of guy. Stacking damage from poison or toxin with regular attacks is awesome, and getting them confused is even better. Of course, the opponents always seem to be able to attack when they've got only a small bit of hp left when they're confused, and yet you never seem to be able to...
Edit: oh yeah. Dream team.
Alakazam
Gardevoir
Toxicroak (dry skin and rain dance gives it a good healing move, rather than rest)
Gastrodon
Sneasle (it can learn toxic)
Sableye (No weaknesses, average stats)

I can never decide which type I like best, so I couldn't devote myself to train any one particular type.

I tend to get a party that gives me an advantage over any type. For example, I may have a fire to take down grass, bug, and ice, a water for fire, rock, or ground, an electric for water and flying, and a psychic for ghost, poison, and fighting. Then I just fill any empty spots with hard-hitters.

I know what this calls for.

I find it slightly weird how I've managed to quote you three times in one night without realising it.

OT:
My team is quite random, I capture and train what I feel like but it would likely be a ghost pokemon.

It is not on your list as far as I am aware, but I would be a jack of all trades. I like collecting at least one of each type, or types that can support more than one element (ie, water/ice, grass/flying, normal/dark/poison). After that I would have at least one with hypnosis/yawn such as a beefed up slowpoke. Once that is taken care of, I would choose those Pokemon that 'look cool'. You can leave that one up to the imagination.

Aside from a balanced team, if I were a character in the games, as opposed to the protagonist, I would use canine/lupine like pokemon, Arcanine, Houndoom and Mightyena (no Vulpix, it is a fox like pokemon).

If I was a gym leader I'd focus on a two on two match in a large arena of two metre tall grass. This would hopefully give me an unfair advantage (hey they have to earn the badge), as my fast hounds run circles around them, if I start losing I burn it all down with Arcanine.

Always start with a fire type, so I might as well call myself that. I have no "perfect" team, so hear's just what I used the last time I played a game, that one being Platinum. Also, in this run, I made it a point to NOT use my starter, just to prove to my idiot friends that it could be done... despite the blasphemy

-Magmortar
-Alakazam
-Honchkrow
-Milotic
-Garchomp
-Leafeon

...I probably spelled those all wrong...

I tend to use Steel and Dragon a lot but really I'll use anything that fits my needs.

Currently aiming for

Infernape
Gyarados
Metagross
Garchomp
Salamence
Gengar

Only have Gyarados at the moment however.

Though I will admit the water type is pretty sweet. The aforementioned Gyarados took out both of Will's Xatu, Koga's Ariados, Venomoth and Crobat, and entirely cleaned out Bruno, Karen and Lance all by its self. Come to think of it I really do love me some Walrein/Abomasnow tag team action as well.

Seriously?

Water types can learn Thunder?

I gotta' try that.

OT: I like Water types also.

My team would be:

Blastoise
Empoleon
Swampert
Feraligatr
Kyogre
Suicune

As soon as I get far enough in SoulSilver, I'll be able to assemble this team.

I already have An Empoleon Feraligatr and Blastoise; just need the other three.

Indeed you can. In competitive play thunder is pretty much guaranteed on any given Kyogre, and any other water type special sweeper is very very likely to have either thunderbolt or hidden power electric. Try sticking thunder, ice beam, surf and calm mind on that Kyogre at some point, you'll not be disappointed.

Keeping it cool with Water and Ice.

They can do everything. From tank to wall to sweep. And they can kill everything. Except themselves...

Perfect team:

Empoleon
Abomasnow
Lapras
Swampert
Kingdra
Weavile

I like Water for its massive diversity, and large number of pokemon.

I like Ice for its rarity AND balance. Dragons are rare, but too strong.

And the fact that Surf is actually an HM that's amazing on offense.

I convince you to try it by showing you the lethality of Hail/Blizzard. And the power of Rain Dance/Thunder, since a large number of water type can learn Thunder.

Pfft what do you mean can't kill themselves, they can do that too! Ever seen what a ThunderBolt from a Starmie will do to a water type or a Brick Break from a Weavile to an ice type? It ain't pretty.

Well, I like to keep things balanced, but if I had to pick I guess I would be ghost/psychic Mewtwo, Alakazam, Haunter and Gardevoir

I try to have really balanced teams but i really like Electric and Dragon Types a lot.

My perfect team with no Legendarys would be.

Luxray
Rapadash
Staraptor
Torterra
Flygon
Lucario

And with a legendary id replace Flygon with Rayquaza.

I voted Ghost/Psychic/Dark, but I use many different types.

Although this would be my favorite team:

Charizard
Umbreon
Typhlosion
Absol
Dragonair
Red Gyarados
