Poll: Poll: subbed or dubbed?

just browsing thru escapist when i noticed an anime thread up. I havent watched anime in ages, but after seeing this thread it got me in the mood, so to speak, and I got started wondering whether fellow escapee anime watchers prefer subbed or dubbed anime.

myself, I prefer subbed, as Im an extremely fast reader, so I can follow the text and still keep pace with the animation, and also because watching the occasional dub has made me cringe and my insides curl with shame at the attemtep transposition of "wacky" japanese-ness into english and also because most (or at least as far as I've seen) mainstream dubs are heavily geared towards a child oriented audience.

i have no prefrence because most dubs suck,so i watch subs alot, but when dubbing has a really good voice cast, it kicks your ass while ripping apart your spine

I lean towards subs, though dubs are fine if I heard it that way first. There are also quite a few good dubs out too (or I'm more tolerant than a lot of people who prefer subs). Some stuff just doesn't translate well into English though.

Really depends on the quality of either. The subs in the battle royale movie were hilarious.

Personally, I prefer subbed,
Dubbed usually fails due to the difference in mouth movements of words said.
Sometimes the subs are just plain funny at the same time.

Battle of the Planets and G-Force are well known to be awfully dubbed, for those not in the know, Battle of the Planets is the Yankee child friendly dub or the rather dark Japanese cartoon.

subbed every time. some animes i can bare the dubbed if i can't find the subbed version but i will always go for subbed first

Subbed. When listening to a dubbed anime, you realize just how cheesy some of the lines are when they're translated. When reading the japanese, it doesn't come off as bad.

Also, there are just some things that shouldn't be translated into engrish at all because it just makes things worse, i.e. BELIEVE IT!

On a lighter note, watching dubbed Naruto and taking a shot after each BELIEVE IT! makes for a great drinking game...

Mostly subbed for me. Though there were rare gems like Samurai Champloo that did a pretty decent dub. As a matter of fact, I liked the dubbed version of that one over the original Japanese version.

That is a bit offensive, isn't it? To say that everyone who watches anime without subs or dubs are "japanophiles". Maybe they learned Japanese and wants to test their skills and enjoy a good anime. Or maybe they're Japanese.

Also, I choose with subs, the voice acting is better.

It depends on the dub. On rare occasion the dubs are fantastic. The Funimation Dragonball Z for instance. Their dub on that show is fantastic, and far less confusing (in Japan, Goku, Gohan, and Goten are all voiced by the same girl, and they all sound exactly the same all the time). But, generally speaking, I'll admit that you're better off with subs, just because at least (if the subs are accurate) you're not missing plot points that English dubs tend to miss in translation.

Dubbed, because a lot of the time, the dudes sound like women in the original versions.

Well I've only seen one Animé series that I've enjoyed enough to stick with and that was Death Note. I watched it once subbed and once dubbed. I preferred it dubbed because the quality of the voice acting was very good on the English dub. I'd imagine an inferior voice actor would totally wreck it (as I felt all of the dubbed Cowboy Bebop suffered from (I say all but I could only bear three episodes of that drivel)).

I prefer subs as its usually a stricter interpretation of the Japanese. That and I can understand a bit of Japanese just from watching so many subbed animes and subs dont bother me.
