I'm on a diet, so all candy (sorry, sweets because I'm, y'know, British) is out of the window for me at the moment anyways, haha.

Fridays will always be Chocolate Fridays for me.

What would be the point of going on if I couldn't have chocolate at least once a week?

Though, I used to eat sweets pretty much every day, so once a week is certainly a step down. It's a start, at least *shrug*

i thought you were talking about "quitting calling it Candy" and seperate it again into the 2 categories of sweets and chocolate... well, in all fairness, you can have your idiolect (if thats even the right term), but film makers should not call it candy when Charlie and the Chocolate (not the lack of 'candy in the title) factory is set in good old (bloody :p) England, where we speak proper like and stuff >.>

actually on topic, ignoring my bullcrap, dude, its entirely up to you what you do... and if you have the willpower to do so, then you have a little of my respect... sure people may think its weird to give up something you like... but they don't have the brain capacity to think for a moment and realise that its because it means giving up something that you don't like more.. for example, you will be more than likely a much healthier person :D
in my case, giving up gaming until after my exams means i will get better results.

Maybe you should just restrain yourself from eating so much instead of stopping altogether, "quitting for a week" isn't hard for me at least

Not a candy person, but if you take the others away from me you'll die. I'm borderline underweight anyway so I've yet to see a problem (My arteries on the other hand...)

I envy your willpower. Maybe I'll join you in giving up candy. I'm gonna keep junk food in general though.

I haven't had any candy or "snacks" in 4 months, although I do occasionally drink soda and eat ice-cream. No candy, however.

Nah, I like my snacking, and I'm certainly not going to let my high metabolism go to waste.

Sour Punch Straws from existence, my answer will remain Fuck you man. Take a step off the beach and don't get in the way o' my goodness.
I have never even heard of those things. I am intruiged.

And on topic, feh, I could do it if I wanted to; I mean I quit eating meat cold turkey about 6 years ago. It's just willpower. But that's not to say I'm going to stop eating sweet stuff, 'cause that would be utterly retarded for me to do given the fact 1) I have to work with kids, 2) I hate kids and 3) I don't smoke and never intend to start.

I have to work with kids as part of my course, although I wasn't told this when I originally enrolled. Damn them all

I was never really a candy eater anyway, but I am currently on week four of not eating chips and that sort of junk food. I'm not as tired all the time, I don't feel like garbage every day, and I've actually dropped almost a clothing size. And that's without changing my exercise habits (or lack thereof).

Going back to the gym next week is going to be a *****, though. I'm a bum.

Ok, look. I've been working for weeks to forget about those delicious treats, and then you HAD TO GO AND WRITE THIS!
But it's not your fault, you couldn't know.

For years I've insisted that chocolate isn't candy. Nice to see that I have sympathisers! :)

Don't take comments about completely stopping being 'too much' seriously. Refined sugars tend to induce a lot of craving, so if you can get off them long enough, you'll be much happier and satisfied with all the healthy food avaialable. Quitting cold turkey may seem hard, but it's the easiest way with refined sugar. Still, it's good to have something to substitute for those snacks, as many people have suggested.

I gave up sweets one spring fifteen years ago for forty days and have been a changed person since. I'm much happier with foods that are unsweetened and have developed a much more refined sense of taste for foods, though I occasionally have foods with raw cane sugar or cane juice in them. My intake is low enough that I can keep any cravings I develop under control. I'm also quite fit and energetic.

One thing I highly recommend is reading the ingredients on all your food and avoiding everything with High Fructose Corn Syrup (maybe not an issue in Sweden). Debates on whether it's natural or not aside, it has a higher craving and weight gain impact than most other sugars and the processed foods that contain it are usually unhealthy for other reasons that compound the problems.

As far as snacking, while fruits and raw nuts are far more expensive than candy, they are more satisfying. Once your cravings go down (as a result of cutting the sugar), you'll be much more satisfied when you eat a few berries and nuts. The nutritional value is also much higher. As a result, you'll often eat less naturally if you don't have 'sugar-fortified' snacks driving up your cravings.

Here's a few other healthier 'snack' foods I would recommend:
- Mix unsweetened cocoa powder into unsweetened Rice Milk. My girlfriend does this for a chocolate milk drink that is naturally sweet from the rice milk, without being sugar-boosted. I also add unflavoured powdered vitamin mix into this since the chocolate hides the taste from her. >:1
- This one is a bit odd, but I like to mix orange juice and whole milk (think Orange Sherbet) to have with breakfast in the morning. It's more filling and richer than a glass of plain OJ.
- Hummus is good protein. I like to put a bit of spicy hummus on a few whole grain crackers (like Wasa crispbreads). The combination of complex carb and protein satisfies hunger cravings and meets nutritional needs much more effectively than similar foods that do not combine the two.
- Sliced bread from the grocery store is often not given enough time to rise appropriately. To cover the resulting bland flavour, extra sugar is added. Look for a sliced bread from a local bakery for the best flavour with less sugar. I personally go a step further and get a Flourless Sprouted Grain bread from Trader Joe's or a natural foods grocer. This is absolutely delicious and is made completely from whole grains and sprouted grains instead of flour made from processing the grains. A little raw almond butter on top makes the perfect breakfast. (Once again combining whole grains and protein from the nuts.) Some breads like this will even have sprouted soy added to form a complete protein in the bread.

Hope this is more helpful than overwhelming.
