They should definately remain. I really don't use them that much myself (haste and slow are really the only ones that ever got a working over in Final Fantasies), but they can be exploited. The problem here is most people are either 1) too lazy or can't be bothered to use them when simple attacking magic or normal attacks are present or 2) don't put the time in to master them (I fall mainly into this category). They can be rewarding though, but it takes time to figure it out, like anything else.
Another reason they should remain is because bosses use them on you, making the fight much more challenging and original than if they were not present. I remember one of the Seymours on FFX casting zombie then full life for an instant kill, that was soooooooooooo annoying
