I've thought about it as everybody surely, but isn't this level limit on many games (mostly console games) really annoying? like if the developers did it on purpose so that you have a limited amount of fun; (which i found it restrictive and punitive somehow...)

so answer the poll and if you have something to add (an idea, or if you think i'm wrong...)

ps: have a nice day/night.

IF there was no level cap, Then you'd continue leveling until the game would prevent you from leveling any farther, Ever the best monsters would be easiest for you.

Most of the time the level cap is far beyond what you need to beat the game. Like Final Fantasy games, usually cap at 100, when you need around 50-60 to beat the game.

I don't really see a problem with this.

Well, there's always Disgaea. With a level cap of 9999 and as far as I can tell, no cap on stats. My attack rating was at least several tens of thousands.

What fallout3 has done works. If you raise the level cap with each dlc, start off with a cap of say 50 then 60 70 80 90 100 when the DLCs come out.

Gotta agree with this. You don't need to be higher than level 70 or so to finish a Final Fantasy game. Any leveling beyond that is all your own choice. (Course, that never stops me from getting to level 99 and whaling on everything for the sheer satisfaction of the one-hit kills.)

I assume that by "no lvl cap" you mean the games where you can get to lvl 99 or 999, given enough time. Like in the olden days.

If Im right, than yeah, I prefer those kind of games.

that's right ! you know what i mean!

It depends. I ususally feel limited when level caps occur in games - Fallout 3 and Borderlands being the main culprits of this - but I can understand why they're there.

The thing is, I do occasionally just want to be the badass that's simply too powerful, but I don't want to earn that through cheats or codes or anything. If I sink way too much time into a game, then I should be rewarded for doing so. Whether that's overpowered weapons or overlevelled characters, I just want a little return on my investment, y'know?

there is no point in leveling then, this is one such reason as to why i hated ff8, people like grinding games for a reason, not saying i do but instead of having to hope to god i get a critical hit with my fire magic spell or lucky ass headshot, i can just go level up a bit and get my party or skills better first

now say, you go and attack a boss, and you lose, so you spawn back at the town or w/e, and he levels up a bit so you gotta work harder to beat him now, i wouldn't mind that as much

i get your point; let's say i was thinking something in-between that idea...

I don't really like level caps. They make the game feel limiting. I would have enjoyed KOTOR allot more if i could have gotten to a higher level. I just like to be able to screw around at times. And the more stuff i can do the better.

For plain RPG's it doesn't matter because your mainly playing single player.
For MMORPG's you need a level cap so you don't have "Make Love Not Warcraft" problems.

Level caps don't mean much to most people. Order of Ecclesia, for instance, allows you to level to 255 if you beat the game on hard, capped at level 1. Level 255 is a ridiculously high level, so ridiculous that I doubt many people have even attempted it.

Other games have a limited number of monsters, so although there is a level cap, you might be incapable of reaching it (If I remember correctly there was a bug in the original Diablo that made reaching the hard level cap of 50 impossible - at the highest difficulty setting, at level 49, diablo would give no experience.) The maximum level you can get to in that case is a soft cap. Beat everything, grind until the hardest monsters give no exp etc.

I think Disgaea had a ludicrously high level cap, like 1000, and you weren't intended to reach it through normal play, so it would be the former "no level cap" like Ecclesia.

I feel it is necessary to bring this up...

I've seen videos of people in the often mentioned Disgaea series do more damage in a single hit than I've done over the full length of most RPGs.

I've played Disgaea. You begin the game doing sane amounts of damage... and there is video on youtube of people crossing well over the hundred billion damage line. Seriously. And the game actually matches power with you.

Without. I love the ridiculous freedom in games like Disgaea. Yup, Disgaea is the perfect example.

Oh, seems I've been ninja'd a couple of times... oh well, it is that good of an example.

i understand what your saying, but thats the whole point of kotor and most of bioware's games, they are linear, and whatever you are doing is always working towards the main goal of the game, which is to finish it, while in some freedom games you can grind or reload in a city and have the same npc's or baddies pop up time and time again

plus if you can't rape on malak..you are a sad excuse for a jedi..imo

but anyways

fair enough, i kind of took your generalization a bit far, but i just hate games where they claim to be almighty rpg's, when if everything levels to you, then there is no point in stats at all, as alot of those games you dont control which stats, you just control the weapons/inventory and the magic/summons or specials

but if you are looking in between, thats not too bad
