Depends on the mobility of the enemies. I loved six (and less) shooters in Borderlands, but everyone's got skags in their pants in Borderlands 2 so I favor SMGs.

Depends a lot on the game, but usually the ones that look, sound and feel best. In Return to Castle Wolfenstein, the MG42 felt and sounded fantastic, and incidentally, it's predecessor MG3 in real life is also very, very fun. In Gears of War 3, definitely the sawed-off. I like assault rifles, but mostly when they allow for burst or semi firing, as you wouldn't fire it on full-auto in real life, on account of most assault rifles firing fast enough to empty a full 30-round clip in between 1 and 2 seconds. Yes, I've tried. Most modern military shooters also get the reloading times completely wrong. After one year in the army I could reload my assault rifle quite a bit faster than the supposedly highly trained soldiers in these games. I would also love it if a game actually implemented Norwegian versions of some rifles, like the HK416, and the AG3 (modified HK G3). A lot of the time I go for semi-auto or bolt-action rifles, like the M14, Mosin-Nagant and such, and again I would love to see a game implement a Krag-Jørgensen bolt-action.

But for pure, allround FUN, I picked pistols in the poll, because who doesn't love running around with akimbo Desert Eagles or Colt Pythons or what have you, it's just sweet.

The BIG ones.
You know what these weapons are: The BFG 9000, The Experimental MIRV, The Devastators, The Gluon Gun etc.
The weapons so large and powerful with such a scarcity of ammunition that they hand them out for free before the final boss' castle just to even the odds for you!

LMGs for me, just point in the general direction of the enemy, pull the trigger and watch everything die in a continuous hail of bullets.

Personally, I like WW1/WW2 rifles, they seem to have a kick with them, or perhaps a musket.
Going to pop your behind like its 1812 and slash ya up like in medieval!
But more practically, pistol and a knife works quite nicely. Or rapier. A rapier could work.

Mid-Range Scoped SMG with firing selection (single, triple, auto). Personal preference H&K MP-5... wait are we talking about games or real life? Oh well no difference.

I love shotguns.
Because they're kind of like melee weapons, except more bullety.
Also, I can imitate Sarge while using it.
"SHOTGUN! SHOTGUN GOD DAMN IT!" Is what I always say when I get one in Halo.

I generally have a love for rocket launchers and other big hitters. I particularly enjoy predicting the path of a target and getting the hit such as shooting down a jet without lock on. Makes everything so much more satisfying. Also very useful for my version of stealth in games like Battlefield.

Is Insomniac a gun-type, because I prefer anything incredibly fun to play with that I can't find in other games. In TF2 I use spy most of the time because of the technical use of the cloak and disguises. If I can't have something that turns my opponents' guns into flaming monkeys or a rapid-fire rocket launcher, I prefer sniper rifles or revolvers.

Where the fuck's my MMG? I want something over-sized, overpowered, and loud. Something firing a rifle round in a fully automatic manner, with one or two hundred more to spare. Belt-fed, magazine, I don't care! Bipod, tripod, you got pods, I'll take them.

The logic here being that at longer ranges, I can fire in short controlled bursts, and still hit something. At shorter ranges, I can just hold down the trigger until whatever's in front of me has more holes than not-holes. And the full-sized rifle round means there's absolutely no compromising power for accuracy or recoil.

Also, suppression. The enemy, whatever army, race, or species they may be, are rarely so gun-ho about jumping into a hail of flying 7.62mm or equivalent.

Bolt action rifles, bolt action rifles ALL THE WAY ACROSS! The deadliest weapon known to man (After the Apache Helicopter. Nothing beats the Apache Helicopter).

Fire. Fire is the best solution to ANY problem, video game or not. Sadly not many games give me this option. :(

Ranged battle like a Battle Rifle or Marksman Rifle (from halo) and a sniper or a silent crossbow type weapon like a Hellsing (from Metro 2033).

between shotguns and other, the other being weapons that synergies well with other weapons. I know that isn't the best description, I mean things like weapons that can pull things closer to allow for a higher chance to hit, or any weapon that allow you to create cover (e.g. gravity gun) as it allows you to set things up for easier recoil shots(grenade launcher type weapons). That's maybe why I like magika so much as most spells could be classified as other.

Shotguns.

You can blame that on Behead The Undead in Timesplitters.
So satisfying.

I play shotguns in almost any game that has them. I loved using them as long range weapons in Mass Effect 1 and 3 (I remember playing SMG in 2 because they felt nerfed).

If I could choose a second, I love how you can just push out ammo using an SMG and be considered "doing it right".

Of course if you're talking about Fallout, nothing will replace the spot in my heart reserved for the plasma rifle.
