Blu-Ray is dead and isn't going to revive to any real extent any time soon since digital distribution is becoming the norm.
Wait... what? Isn't Bluray thriving having won the format war with HD-DVD?
Either way, it's far from dead.
this. blu ray has been selling like hotcakes from what i have seen, in my state/area, more people i know buy blu ray now than standard dvd's
Most people I know have been replacing all their DVDs with Blu-rays. Digital distribution won't work properly for quite a while. Too many problems with actually viewing/transferring media. Also a HD movie can be up to 15GB+ which mean I can download 2 movies a month before going over my internet limit.

Fuzzy and crap? Every time I see a comparison between Standard Def. and High Def, Standard Def. and BlueRay, or High Def. and BlueRay, I see no noticeable difference at all. If it were a big jump then maybe I could see it worth it but there's really no major difference as far as I can tell.
Here is a link to a comparison of the two (DVD vs BD). http://www.cornbread.org/FOTRCompare/FOTR_Compare6_DVD.html There is a noticeable difference in the detail in the HD image. This example is not the best and I can assure you the difference is even greater when it's 60" wide on your plasma. I only watch DVDs in my car now, on a 7" screen. Anything bigger and I can't stand it.

Ok, I guess I must concede my point to that but I guess I've just not found any issue with things because I don't generally watch movies or TV on a huge screen which explains why it's not an issue to me. I still hold my ground on the difference between BluRay and HD though. The difference between those two is far too little to warrant buying one over the other.

It's a solid investment, especially if you want to convert your console into a media center. Exclusives like Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, Valkyria Chronicles, LittleBigPlanet and White Knight Chronicles are really letting the PS3 shine and finally strut it's stuff. Plus it has web browser support and free online. Controllers don't use batteries either, just plug em into your console and you're set. You can also put in a laptop HD if you really want to. You want a 500G PS3? You got it.

It's the superior console IMO. Just like the PS2 it needed time before the great exclusives hit and prove that it's a powerhouse.

That's a lot of money to dish out for a few exclusives. I'd just rent one or borrow a friends' (and give collateral, of course). Especially since I'm never going to go to Blue Ray. I'm not hating on the PS3, its a great console, but the amount of exclusive I don't think warrants a purchase. Unless you can find one cheap. It's up to you though. Just make sure you do your research and see how many PS3 exclusives you'd want to play and if it's worth it for you (for example, I'd only want to play Demon's Souls, Uncharted 1 and 2, and maybe Heavy Rain. It's just not worth it for 3-4 games).

By the way, I would discount the opinion of anyone who uses the word fanboy here (like the poster below me who is shaming all us Yankees fans).

i had the same dilemma, and i decided to ultimately buy a ps3..best decision ever! not only are the exclusives amazing, it has amazing extra features (web browser, netflix, music, movies, downloading ps1 games, etc.)
and heavy rain is an amazing game despite not having the action found in other games..unlike most games, it tells a story that's amazing in it's own rights. Don't hate on it until you've played it all the way through.
and uncharted 2..seriously..the one reason i bought my ps3!
so definitely buy it..it's definitely worth it!

my advice is if you want a game that lasts a very long time, take little big planet, because even if it looks a little bit childish, (and if you get more controls) in multiplayer it's a laugh, from 2 to 4 and with easy level creation tools+millions of online maps... it's a must no?

also you won't say no to BluRay once you've tried it.

Definitely YES! The PS3 is the superior system for multiple reasons.

1. Better graphics, faster framerate
2. It is cheaper in the long run because of free online play
3. Again, free online
4. A controller layout that MAKES SENSE. Why is the left analog stick there? I am not holding a controller like that, it is NOT a Rubiks cube!
5. Each developer makes it's own own online format, allowing for more diversity
6. The PS3 is a completely new system, not a repackaged version of the old, just with extra power.
7. Trophy sounds cooler than achievement
8. Uncharted
9. I am using my PS3 to type this post.

Ok, I think my pro-Sony rant is over now, I am just sick of X-Box players saying that their system is better with no reasons why. Ok, now i'm done.

From personal experience I've learnt that despite how expensive it is, the PS3 is definetly worth it's price. You can sit and listen to people droning on about how shit the PS3 is and how many balls the free online gaming aspect of it sucks but quite frankly the PS3 has been heavily reliable to get the job done, it may only have a few games but quite frankly that doesn't matter because it's online aspect is pretty decent. And unlike what some peopl say Playstation network is actualyl very stable I've played 250 online games (Meaning I've played one round of certain game A + B + C) In this case I mainly play Resistence 2 and Killzone 2 online, and after all those games I have yet to still experience any problems with PSN. Although the matchmaking systems for the PS3 do suck balls.

All in all I recommend the PS3 over the XBox 360 unless you actually like forking out £150 each time it DIES. After the 3rd time (And believe me, my XBox 360 red-ringed 4 times on me.) you'll have spent so much money on the XBox 360 you may as well have brought a PS3.

Heavy rain is basically Quick time event the movie the game. That should not be a buying incentive.
I'd invite you over to play it for yourself, because it doesn't deserve to be degraded to such a level. The game really is an amazing experience and much much more.

Don't judge about Heavy Rain until you've played it all the way through, so that you know the story and who the real Origami Killer is. Seriously.
You are my hero for the day.

OT: Yes. Definitely get a PS3. It's a solid, reliable machine. And (Though this is coming without prior research) the PS3's exclusives seem more varied than the 360's, which, as I've seen, mostly include shooters. Plus, most (Not all. I'm looking at you, LAIR.) of the PS3's exclusives are just grand. I can't say otherwise for 360, seeing as I don't have one. But I feel the big names are very overrated.

I was thinking of getting one, simply because online play is free, most of my friends have one, bluray player, and they're awesome

Sorry, I should probably read all the posts in case this has been answered, but I'm lazy: If I were to buy a PS3 (for the games, not the Blu-Ray, which I really don't see the point of), but hook it up to a standard-definition TV, would I run into any problems?
