Yeah, free choice... after how long? When plopped into the Wasteland, you can go pretty much anywhere you want, and while the game does try to lead you on a particular route, it's extremely easy to shove it to the side and faff about, if not outright murder the plot-relevant character and effectively lose the main quest until you stumble across somebody who knows something worthwhile.Benny Blanco said:I definitely liked Fallout 3 but I have to say I prefer New Vegas. As for the "led around by the nose part, I'd like to disagree: in terms of being railroaded like a ************, I felt that this was more prevalent in F3.
For instance, the way in which there is basically only one faction for which you can work. Oh, sure, you can do the "Stupid Evil" route (Blow up Megaton, Carry out the bidding of the "President" etc.) but basically you're still responsible for the dumb water quest.
Contrast this to the basically free choice of factions for which to work in F:NV.
Fallout 3 gives you free choice in where you want to go, but it does not let you choose factions.Kimarous said:Yeah, free choice... after how long? New Vegas? I want to go to New Vegas. Now what's the fastest rou- OH GOD GIANT KILLER BUGS THAT HURT MORE THAN DEATHCLAWS! Well, looks like I'll be taking the LONG way around...
See, THAT'S railroading! Saying New Vegas has more freedom is like saying FFXIII gets better 10 hours in.
Fallout 3 has a better story, New Vegas has better gameplay.stringtheory said:with the release of the Fallout: New Vegas ultimate edition on steam, I'm considering buying it or the GTOY edition of Fallout 3, and currently being a poor student, I can only get one, so which one gives "more value"? I know that they are essentially the same game, but is there any kind of continuation between Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, which would justify getting Fallout 3 first? or does one have better gameplay?
I know this will probably start a flame war, but I do want to know ahead of time which is worth the
money I'll be paying for it
or alternately, you could suggest a similar open-world game (yes, I have Skyrim, oblivion, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat) that would be worth my money more then the fallout series?
New Vegas definitely, better story, better DLC, better armor, better setting, fits in more with the Fallout series, and is all around a better game.stringtheory said:with the release of the Fallout: New Vegas ultimate edition on steam, I'm considering buying it or the GTOY edition of Fallout 3, and currently being a poor student, I can only get one, so which one gives "more value"? To me Fallout 3 had a better atmosphere, more apocalyptic setting and was much less buggy... so...stringtheory said:SNIP

Fallout 3 is pretty solid, marionette-styled characters aside, and I really like the world overall
however Fallout New Vegas has better writing, is more colorful and not so desaturated, and is more lore-consistent
so yeah, I think there's your choice
both are pretty damn fine, it's just New Vegas is more in line with the set lore from Fallout and Fallout 2
that and it has the Dead Money DLC, which is in my opinion the best damn DLC I've ever played
