This is goning to be a flame war topic....
I own both consoles (let me say that first)
To me the best console is the ps3:
1. supports hdmi
2. no battery's needed
3. no online gaming costs
4. its not jail-breaked (well not worldwide)
The xbox is fun and it has a better online system but I am not going to spend money for live when I already spend money for internet. I already pay for internet now I need to pay more to use it on my Xbox? come on.

So now for your question:
its really your own choice. You shouldn't ask for someone else his/her opinion because that would only start a flame-war.
1. Hmmm... I'm using hdmi on my xbox 360....
2. I use a controller with wire
3. Xbox live is just better, and worth the 50 bucks a year
4. ???

Unless you already have some specific exclusives pulling you to one or teh other, which i assuem you don't, cause otehrwise, you wouldn't be asking here, get the ones the majority of your friends have. You'll be able to borrow games, and play togetehr online.

I've considered taking the Wii as well
Do yourself a favor and leave the Wii alone, its a huge waste of money even if it is cheaper.
Unsurprisingly a person with the username "Hardcore gamer" thinks the Wii is a waste of money

The PS3 is better value for your money, it's a Blu-Ray player and a music center. It has optical out built in so you don't have to rely on your TV including optical out or the cable you're using supporting it, so there's simply more flexibility for your sound system, although conversely with the lack of a VGA HD cable slightly less flexibility for your display - although presumably you'll want something of at least 32"-40" so either way you're likely looking at an HDTV.

The PS3 will last longer - with a 360 you need to buy yourself an extended warranty or service plan, and those go no more than 3 years, so you're out of luck beyond that. A PS3 will easily last you 3 years without trouble, and 8-10 years isn't out of the question.

The PS3 doesn't nickel and dime you - no need to buy rechargable batteries or the play and charge kit, no need to pay for Xbox Live Gold for online play, no need to buy the stupid Microsoft Points that never add up perfectly for what you want to buy. Online play is free, everything you need except for an optical cable and HD cable is included, and anything you buy off the PlayStation store can be bought in proper $ amounts.

The PS3 isn't region locked - some games on the 360 are region free, but if there's a fighting game only available in Japan, you can import it without concern that it won't work. That's not the case with the 360.

The PS3 has more connectivity options, since you have BlueTooth as the connection method you're not going to be stuck with an annoying dongle for 3rd party controllers as much as with the 360, keeping your precious USB ports free. You can use almost any USB peripheral as well, like the Sega Saturn USB control pad that's rated very highly for fighting games, there's the wireless SFIV pads by MadCatz, while the 360 gets wired versions, as well as options between wired and wireless arcade sticks. Particularly with fighting games you just have more options to get exactly what you want to play the games the way you want if you're buying a PS3. Also worth noting is there are far fewer options in general for 360 controllers, as almost all the 3rd party ones are clones of the 360 controller. I've had to quit playing my 360 for now and go back to PS2 and GameCube because of the controller, and waiting for the one option that actually has a difference to come back in stock so I can buy it. I know plenty of people have no complaints about the 360 controller, but if you dislike it, as plenty of people do (and who therefore don't own a 360) then you're quite screwed. With the PS3 at least there are a number of companies making controllers similar to or exactly like the 360 controller, so if you dislike the DualShock you can always just buy something else instead.

The Xbox 360 only has two advantages over the PS3, one is the aforementioned VGA HD cable, which lets you use a monitor up to 1600x1200 resolution, which is pretty handy for keeping prices down if you already have one, and is good up to around 24". The other is older games - among the ones that are out already, before 2008 the 360 has most of the good games, and those games are really cheap now. I've found far more games at under $10 for the 360 than for the PS3. $5-$15 is actually a reasonable range to find a bunch of 360 games, whereas you're usually looking at more like $15-$25 for PS3 games (although there are a few $10 PS3 games as well). I'm certainly making the most of those advantages right now, but what it comes down to is the 360 is only a better value than the PS3 if you literally can't afford the PS3 and HDTV - the moment you do have money to pay for stuff it's incredibly tempting to just buy the extras for the 360 that really cause the costs to add up.

If you have an even split between friends playing PS3 and 360 now, get the PS3, you won't have to pay to play with them, and in the long run your 360 playing friends will switch over. Everyone has a break point, be it 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 times that their 360 breaks and they have to send it in for repairs that eventually they just give up and switch to PS3. I've bought a large number of 360 games and peripherals from people like this at a very low price. That is of course an advantage, so much cheap stuff from people tired of the main system breaking, while everything else is reliable, but of course the harsh reality that goes with that is eventually you'll be doing the same.

It depends on what you like more. Be sure to take a look at the exclusives for each console first. Here are some examples:

360: The Gears of War Trilogy, The Halo Series, Mass Effect 2, the Forza racing sims, Alan Wake.
PS3: MGS4, Heavy Rain, The Gran Turismo games.

Don't let Kinect or Move tip your opinion. They won't be boasting anything decent for another year or so. And don't let Xbox Live fool you. Just because you need to pay for Gold, doesn't make inferior to PSN. Plus Xbox Live looks much better IMO.

Let me tell you about some games to look forward to in 2011: Dead Space 2, Red Faction: Armageddon, Bulletstorm, Dragon Age 2, and Gears of War 3.

EDIT: If you're in the market for a 360 then get the Slim. It's quieter, has built in wireless, has a 250GB HD and is less prone to RRoD than the original. Plus is has some great combo deals and will undoubtably give you a run for your money.

Incidentally, with regards to the Wii, I've noticed of all the gamepads with analog sticks the GameCube one is the best for fighting games due to the octagon around them, so you can actually hit the 8 directions more accurately. That really only gets you Soul Calibur II though, but Heihachi and Spawn are lame compared to Link anyway (why on earth they didn't go for Yoshimitsu and Ryu Hayabusa instead is beyond me), so it's still a good option for GameCube. You can also get one for $10 so you can ignore the 3 game rule and make it a 1 game rule. It also makes the Wii slightly more appealing if it happens to have some fighting games for it - you'll be able to hit diagonals on the GameCube, Wii Classic and possibly even Nunchuk than you would with either the 360 controller or the DualShock 3. I honestly can't think of a Wii fighting game that isn't Brawl though, so that rather wastes the potential it has.

If you play fighting games, I would suggest the PS3, its d-pad is better suited for fighting than the xbox's. Also if you have a family, that blu-ray player might come in handy.

If you're mostly playing fighters, then for the love of GOD get a PS3.
The Xbox 360 D-pad is horrendous.
Also, just get a PS3 for single player games in general.

The reason why it turns into a flame war topic is because people like you spout misinformation about the other system. 360 supports HDMI. It has for a long time now. Also, Most people with modded 360's get kicked off live and I'm not sure how that would affect the OP's gaming experience anyhow. Not to mention, people do jailbreak their PS3's, especially those who have installed unix and such on them. Completely pointless arguments that in no way help the OP.

Xbox. Not only for the exclusives, but Xbox Live itself is just such a better service that offers so, so, so much more. It is a much more social experience as well. Do yourself a favor and go with it.

1)Which ones have better exclusive that suit your interests.

2)What are the majority of your friends playing.

I have a ps3. To me it was the best purchase. I like more of the exclusive, and after having a 360 for a short period of time ended up not liking any of the exclusive i thought i would love.

If you were me i would say buy the PS3. It may be a bit more expensive but it comes wit ha blueray player inside of it so i find that to be the compensating factor.

Ps3 349CAD
Half decent Blue ray player -149CAD
Total 200CAD

Xbox 360 Elite 299CAD (sorry for the mix up folks, didn't realize I quoted the price of an arcade.)

Price taken from future shop website.

That's how i break it down anyways. The blue ray player inside is no where near bottom of the line but i won't call it top of the line for arguments sake either.

So yeah, that's why i would buy the PS3 in your shoes.

The 360 isn't bad, just not for me.

The choice is ultimately up to you. As long as at the end of your day your having fun. You win.

OP, I'm just gonna wade through the bullshit here and give you some straight facts, starting with the systems themselves:

1. Both systems offer 250 GB HDD's with built-in WiFi and HDMI support and 1 year warranties on the new slim models, both for the same price.
2. Both new models have failure rates under 10% (360's manufactured after 2008 do as well).
3. PS3 has both free and pay online, as does 360. The key difference is that you need to pay for online multi player on the 360.
4. PS3 has Blu-ray.
5. 360 has an extended 3 year warranty on Red Ring failures and E74 failures.

with the controllers:

1. The PS3 controller D-Pad is better than the 360 one.
2. The 360 triggers are better than the PS3 ones.

with the games:

1. Most cross platform games tend to run better on the 360 because it's not as powerful, as such developers go for the lowest common denominator.
2. Many 360 titles also come out on PC, aside from their major exclusives like Halo and Gears, whereas a PS3 exclusive is only available on the PS3.
3. 360 tends to have more shooters and RPG's.

So, based on your preference for games I would recommend the PS3 simply because most fighters are multi-platform and the PS3's controller is better for fighting games anyhow. If you don't like shooters or long, time consuming RPG's, then the 360 probably won't pique your interest.

Glad to see this as the first reply.
Now that the 360 supposedly has it?s rrod fixed (you might want to check and make sure though) I would go by what your friends are playing on. However, keep in mind that you have to pay for online with the 360 and with the ps3 it?s free. However, the 360 online (and the other console features) gets more robust support while the ps3 online and other features aren?t nearly as consistent.

However when it comes to an rpg you can pick up and play for an hour then save and go back to where you were, I would recommend Fallout 3. It?s the most enthralling rpg experience I?ve had since Phantasy Star 4. It?s kind of shooter-ish but (especially if you use VATS) it?s mostly an rpg.

Indeed you do have to pay, $5 a month. Harsh, I know. I have had this argument way too many times before, I'm not having it again. The only defense the PS3 ever has is that you don't have to pay. Live is far superior.
