I liked it and thought it was ok but never really saw what all the hype over it was all about.
Probably because you never played online. That's where it's legendary - the flexibility of the map editor allowed for people to do absolutely anything they wanted with a starcraft map. Anything. Battle.net is a freaking blast.

Starcraft is a game of my childhood, oddly enough. I played it with all my friends...we pretty much cheated. All the time. None of us were very good at it xD but I have lots of fond memories. It's a great game...I mean, how many games are still fun when you've just bulldozed all the game mechanics with cheats? Starcraft has a really basic appeal. Just building up your base is awesomely fun.

i suk at it hardcore but i loved the story and the cinematics for its time was mind blowing. i did love watching ppl play. although i do remember i played one game really well, i built 150 photon cannons in 10 minutes and a slowly creeped into the enemies base, and using high templar squeezed between the cannons for extra pwr

You should have searched for User Settings maps. I do believe StarCraft was the beginning of the Tower Defense style of gameplay, and there were many others. The map editor was extremely powerful, and it looks like SC2's galaxy editor is even more of a behemoth. People are already doing Tetris and Mario Kart with it, for crying out loud XD.

I played a few of those as well ,and never really go into it, I like playing against my brother and friends because they would use just normal maps but online was a waste of time for me.

If you wanted normal maps, then you're looking for the Ladder system. They're matches restricted to Blizzard-sanctioned maps, which means no infinite resources, weird quirky maps or anything of that. Problem is, that's what all the competitive SC players play, so when you go into ladder mode, you better have some vaseline ready.

Yea i wasn't looking for ladder games so that's why i never played them, it was just one of those games that I found fun at the time but it never really lasted.

Yes I love/d the game. One of my favourite RTS's. Matter of fact, I think I'm going to go play it now. (Have any of you noticed how similar it is to WH:40k? Terrans being Space Marines, Zerg being Tyranids and Protos being Eldar or something?
I think it was originally going to be a warhammer 40k game, but their license got revoked and they were left with lots of concept art.

Exactly correct. They were chosen by Games Workshop to create a PC version of the table top game for WH:40k. However, Games Workshop saw their work and wasn't satisfied, so they took their license away. Then Blizzard made the biggest "Oh yeah? Well Fuck You!!!!!!" move I've ever seen in the video game industry and created the most popular RTS of all time with their work. And the rest is, as we say, history.

OT: All I can say is Helms Deep, Diplomacy, Crash RPG, Special Forces. The map editor was so stellar it practically stemmed its own games (much like DOTA).

Soooooooo many years lost to Starcraft. Best RTS ever in my opinion. Delightful UMS maps really made it that much more of a special game. Games within a Game, Priceless.

I played my friends copy once.
I was unimpressed. I still prefer Warcraft games over Starcraft.

I love my Starcraft... too bad i was never any good at it. I had to use cheats to beat the final level, and I probably can't get my apm above 30 in multiplayer.

I'm gonna quote the simpsons here and state "Watchin' stuff's better than doin' stuff." I love to watch the korean starcraft tournaments. It's just amazing how much those players have mastered the game. GO FLASH!!!! Just one more OSL win for a GOLDEN MOUSE, YOU CAN DO IT!!! :D

I like it alot but i just blow at it compared to warcraft three where i just destroy people. It just has a way different feel and handles alot differently. But ya a good game but my vote to best RTS of all time is gonna go to Warcraft Three(I love hero management)
