I also liked how Lilly was taking the lead with her love scenes. It showed her character well in how she handles situations.

Trying to find other games that have a strong female protagonist that has them taking the lead

Shizune was the one that took me by surprise: she tied Hisao to a damn chair! Mind you, the subtext of that was interesting since she's deaf, it effectively gagged him and it was actually 'erotic' as opposed to 'explicit' because they were almost fully clothed.

Fascinating stuff, and a really sort of sweet game too. Totally worth the 400MB I used to download it :D

Well if the game just happens to have sex in it, that's one thing. Now, if the game tries to sell it self going "Hey look, pixellated titties!", that's quite another. Dating sims? Uh, I tend to not play those anymore for...some unfathomable reason.

Plus, big budget gaming is definitely not the place to look for the real kinky stuff anyway.

First answer wins.

If it's a game where it works naturally, and fits in then I don't think it should be excluded on the basis of "We don't want to give X impression".

If it is pointlessly tacked on clearly for sales/marketing (like the women in Ninja Gaiden) then I tend to just roll my eyes and wish they'd grow up.

As for how games are received, well you shouldn't really count the opinions of people who aren't into gaming when you look at that one. People who don't game tend to have some rather warped views about it in a lot of cases.

Whereas murdering is for everybody, so that's okay.

usually really poorly recevied e.g. mass effect 1
What, you mean one of the most highly-acclaimed games of the last few years, which was praised for its deep and involving plot, and only criticised for sexual content by morons who thought it was some kind of sex game? Or are we talking about a different game here?

You're a moron if sex makes you hate a game.

It depends on the game and if the sex is out of place within the storyline, in heavy rain and mass effect it was not. If the sexual content has been handled in a mature manner then I have no issue with it.

Everyone is constantly blaming Mass Effect and Dragon age and such (on the news) for being porn simulators...

I actually really liked Mass-effect and the scene of this topic added to the character's depth and as a player you can skip it altogether, if you think that fits Shepard better.

The funny thing, is that I never hear anything on this note on the Witcher games... It is way more explicit in those games. Don't get me wrong I actually applaud them for doing that, because they just made the game they wanted it to be, rather than changing everything to meet up everyone's expectations.(the Indy mentality)

I think in ten years no-one will take offence at these things anymore, if it has the correct ERSB rating of course. Why should films be able to use this mechanic as a narrative tool, but not games. That would just be irrational.

way i see it , games are different to books/tv/films in that they are interactive we are usually the protagonist rather than observers of a narrative so the way a story is told in a game is different and i cant think of a time where a sex scene has really added anything to a game.

Dont have anything against it i just think its extremely hard to have it bring anything to this medium.

I want to put this in perspective. I'm 28. I spent several years in the military deployed to Iraq. While I have managed to see a great deal of nudity in my life and even managed to have sex with a number of willing partners I have never killed anyone. Yet, somehow, brutal violence is perfectly acceptable while nudity and sex are not.

Is it not strange that nudity - literally the bodies natural state, is somehow less acceptable than murder? That the fundamental act of creation is distasteful while the act of destruction is acceptable? Why is it that people doing exactly what people are wired to do is somehow taboo?

I find that the US is far worse at this than most, if not all, other western countries. I mean, to me it seems that a lot of movies/games get a far higher age limit if they have nudity and/or sex, than just violence. Which is weird. As you said, how come showing something as natural as a naked person, as long as it fits with the rest of the game/film, is less acceptable than showing someone tearing someone's head from their shoulders in very graphic detail? It just makes no sense to me.

Fortunately, here in Norway, this is far more liberal, and our ratings board only refuses ratings, and thus makes it illegal to sell, in very extreme cases. And these are usually based on violence, not sexuality. To give an example, the french film Baise Moi is illegal to sell here, due to it's extremely graphic way of showing rape. Which is a good thing, I think. When it's just gratuitous like that, I have no problem with it being refused ratings.

OT: I have no problem with sex in games as long as there is a point to it. The Witcher games do this very well I think, because even though they are quite graphic, it feels natural to the rest of the game, and not forced in there for publicity.

As long as they don't show the genitals, I'm okay with it.

Last thing I want to see in a game is my protagonist's 'battering ram' taking up a percentage of my field of vision.

OK, just the tip then. That should be less than a percent. That should make you happy.

To me, anything higher than 0 is still too high.
You're making this very hard for me... How about this, you can buy DLC that hides it? I'll call it "Pants DLC".

Games with violence in them are bad/desperate for attention

It's fairly easy to distinguish between those that are doing it for the attention and those that are trying. Dragon Age vs God of War is a pretty stark comparison.

It really kind of depends on the context. Sex in Dragon Age Origins never felt forced, or thrown in for the sake of controversy. The Witcher 2 on the other hand, well not so much.

I don't think they're asking if sex should ever be included in video games. I think they're asking if any games have included sex in a way that isn't just trying to get media attention.

The answer probably depends on whether you think think the sex scene in (for example) Mass Effect was handled maturely. The OP clearly doesn't think so.

What I mean, is to cover the genital areas in shadow, or at least conveniently blocked off, that way they can still do the do, but no one has to see anything they don't want to.

I'd imagine it would increase awareness of the game but in the end is just a stupid gimmick to attract stupid people into wasting money. *cough* 3D movies *cough*

Got it. So, here is my new plan - the game ships with everybody naked. It's also very cheap. Most of the money would come from selling clothing DLC. You can have lingerie, or jeans and so on. I see some flaws here, so how about women start of in reverse - you get Strip Poker DLCs for them, since they start off with layers and layers of clothing.

That good? I'm trying to cater for you.

I respect your conviction and your ability to go against the group. Its pretty rare, especially on forums. That said, I think you are a little bit late to the party as sex is in nearly all forms of media already.

OT: I never like sex scenes in anything because it becomes a little awkward to watch with friends and family. Like action movies seem to have sex scenes a lot. I'm there to watch an action movie, if I wanted gratuitous nudity I have internet access. Hell I get uncomfortable when Victoria's Secret commercials come on when I'm watching TV with my mom. I think a mature sex scene could work in certain kinds of games, but I think its foolish and overused in almost every kind of media.
