Sex is a part of life. If handled well/maturely there is no reason it shouldn't have a place in video games as well.
Ninja'd. This pretty much sums up my thoughts on the matter.

There is no part of life that cannot be represented in any one media which will inherently make the work it is represented in immediately worse.

That said, add something in gratuitously (I'm looking at you, Team Ninja), and it can seem tasteless. I am generally strongly turned off when I feel a piece of fiction is tasteless - I have never bought a game that had a supposedly "sexy" girl wearing practically nothing on the cover, and showed no gameplay to back it up.

This definition of "gratuitous stuff tends to be tasteless" isn't just about sex. Throw in needless violence, swearing, or pandering to any one audience or... Really anything else that just doesn't make sense or stand up on its own.

If done right, nah. If the game is just like "HERE IS YOU PLOWING A GIRL LOOK TITS" then yeah but I don't see that too much nowadays.

I don't remember Heavy Rain getting a ton of publicity for the sex/nudity. I actually didn't know it had sex/nudity until I played it.

I guess sex/nudity can be used for publicity but I like to think most games that contain sex/nudity are mature games with a point to the sex/nudity, y'know?

Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy had a full interactive sex scene, and I knew nothing about it even though I had been waiting for the game for months, checking reviews and watching interviews.
Not all games are sold on their "SEX: TEH SHOCK!"-value, but yes, some do.

Nope, not in the slightest. In fact, in my experience it tends to be that games with actual sex in them are fairly adult (or are at least earnestly trying), whilst anything with genuinely pathetic attempts at titillating - with lots of of cleavage everywhere - is far worse.

Ah, it's been too long since I've seen the classic puritanical take on matters. Sex is a big part of life, and books, films, games and music all deal - some more than others - with people, life and relationships. If we ignored everything that's intimate between individuals you'd also have to leave out stuff like hopes and fears.
