Depends on my mood. Sometimes it feels good to be a sneaky bastard and sometimes it feels good to go Rambo.

I would like to have the choice. Still waiting for a game where it's possible and easy to be stealthy, yet still possible and easy to shoot everyone in the face while screaming bloody murder.

If anyone makes this game PM me. Then marry me. Make the main character Natalie Portman.
Far Cry! Ctrl to sneak and MOUSE 1 to shoot!

I've always preferred stealth, even in multiplayer FPSs I try and sneak about as much as possible.

I will backstab you.

I use run 'n' gun, but if the game has the right tools to do so, I will use clever strategy to pick off enemies. Like in Mirror's edge. It is basically a must if you try to get through the game without shooting an enemy like I am trying not to do.

You're hilarious. Fun game. No stealth.

i do like stealth, but i seem to get bored of stealth games faster than i do with straight shooters. plus stealth games always have a bit where you're forced to go into a straight fight, and they're always inevitably hard. i just get annoyed with them too easily. still like some though!

I think I'm more inclined to play a stealthy, strategic character, but I'd be lying if I said that charging headfirst into a fray with my shotgun spitting death into hordes of defenders wasn't fucking awesome.

So yeah, I enjoy stealth gameplay when it makes sense, and when my character is weaker. But if I have the luxury of every possible advantage over my foes, then I'll be the first to charge blindly into a group of enemies with my melee weapon of choice.
Giant scyth of doom and power armor that looks like a spiky EVA for me. Actually I do sometimes like stealth if it is done well and in a very non-linear way. However the only thing that I don't like so much about stealth is that the guy that you are supposed to be playing as is a freaking genetically engineered supersoldier, with more brains, sheer brute strength, and weapons than any other single person on the planet, and yet you can easily be mowed down by half a dozen rent-a-dipshits. I am reffering to the Hitman series here, although I still like it.

How can you say one or the other? Which fruit do you like better? Soccer balls or shirts?

Stealth in games can be a way to create tension or drama, running and gunning is just another form of entertainment in its own genres. Certain games have an array of both throughout, and some you actually have a choice to do both, but it might not even be a preference moreso which at that time can give you the more pleasure. So far I haven't seen a game able to pull off both effectively. They tend to give hints to whether the player is in a stealthy moment or if it is time to 'man up' Rambo style.

I can't give a liking because it depends on the scene of the game and how it is pulled off. I like blowing down buildings, destroying cars and leaving body after body riddled with lead juice, but I also like a well pulled off stealth scene giving me the cold tension of knifing someone from behind and nobody knowing about it.

Two genres. Two major differences.

Use a fucking paragraph dude.
Great Wall Of Text!
That was by no means a wall of text - it's only seventeen lines - it was only a paragraph. I was going to write more (though that would've had a line break in it) but I decided against it. It seems to me that a lot of people are afraid of reading or writing more than just one or two lines, it's kind of disappointing really.

Edit.
It is, but it would be hard to read for some though. Turning 4 or so lines into a paragraph means more people are likely to read it, it's really for your benefit than anyone elses.

It doesn't really take the immersion out of the game unless it's meant to be a stealth game. Realism shouldn't really come into a lot of these games if they are there for the escapism factor.

That being said, stealth. One isn't better than the other really. I prefer the cunning I have to use for it to work. Run n Gun is good fun though, but if I were to pick one or the other, stealth is more enjoyable for me.
It's a good point all round - games are just that, games; they are there to get away from the real world. It's a fine balance between realism & immersion vs. escapism & fun. I suppose it just depends on which of those you prefer to see in a game or more to the point how you view and define each of them. One of the reasons I like stealth is that more often than not you are given the bare minimum of what you will need to survive, to me that increases immersion as you're not carrying a totally unrealistic amount of weapons and ammunition.

I understand your point about smaller paragraphs. It's just that that time it flowed when typing so I kept it like that, honestly I didn't really think that others may struggle to read it, I'll look out for that in the future.

I like both. If I can get away with Run 'N' Gun, I might do that, because mowing down enemies makes you feel powerful, especially if my patience is wearing thin, but damn, nothing satisfying like watching an enemy for 20 minutes, move so perfectly, then BAM, snap his neck. I feel like a stealth badass when I kill everyone without them noticing. It's like...ah I can't even describe the feeling of power.

Damn it, guess I'm going to beat MGS4 for the third time with no alerts this time.

Gun'n'runners would be alerted in battle if fighting a stealth army, so in actual battle Gun'n'run wins.

Ha! More people prefer stealth games. Yahtzee sure had better not notice this thread.

Seriously, if executed well, stealth is very rewarding. Tenchu and Metal Gear Solid did it really well.

I guess you could say survival horror games are stealth when you try to avoid killing to maintain ammo, as was the case with the old Resident Evils and Silent Hills.

Ahhh...the satisfying crack of broken necks and the glorious sight of the enemy with a blade in their backs. Truly they are sights to behold.
