Due to the fact I'm half-deaf, if I find a movie doesn't have subtitles, I will be unable to watch it and bluntly refuse.

I won't watch a movie because it has subtitles but I will watch a good or cool movie with subtitles. For instance District B13, it is french with subtitles but it is so awesome!

knowing quite a few people who refuse to watch movies on the basis of their being subtitled (i.e. foreign language) im wondering why, since (and im aware this is just my own opinion) there are so many awesome foreign language films out there. the genius of Guillermo del Toro aside, i recently watched Dod Snow (Dead Snow) a Norwegian (i think) zombie horror comedy that beats the snot out of say Zombieland (which i quite enjoyed).

So, any thoughts, and perhaps your own opinions?
A small minority might just be racist, but most people who don't like subtitles usually just can't read very fast. Since illiteracy has a stigma of "stupidity" attached to it, nobody wants to admit "hey I can't read that quickly" so they'll invent all sorts of other exuses as to why they don't like subtitles.

I believe that foreign films can be incredibly good, so they should be subtitled in order for american audiences to see them. most people think that Hollywood is the only good place that makes movies, when in fact some of the best modern and past directors came out of different countries like Germany, France, and China. i think that subtitling foreign movies is a necessity in order to broaden America's viewing of movies.

Maybe there are so many awesome foreign language movies out there because people who speak foreign languages enjoy going to the movies as well? God, you'd think English-speaking countries were the only nations that had movies with the way your post is written.

If the movie's good enough, I'll watch a subtitled flick. I've seen some cool French, Thai, Japanese, Russian films (go watch Nightwatch right now; I'll wait), and probably 12 more countries I've forgotten. Good film is good film, regardless of language.

For any anime (movie or otherwise): Subs or GTFO
Only other type of movie I watched with subtitles: Pan's Labyrinth. It was amazing
Well I'd have to disagree with you there. I've seen some pretty good dubs, also I hate reading subtitles. Which incidentally brings me to my answer to this thread, as I stated, I hate reading subtitles; mostly because they go so fast that I end up missing most of the dialogue anyway. However having said that, the fact that a movie is in another language and is subtitled wouldn't really be a strong deterant against me seeing it.

Well, I'd rather see a movie as the artists intended rather than see a raped (dubbed) version.

If it was for a foreign language, subtitles are okay. If in a theater, not okay. If they can't speak loud enough for me in a DVD, they are okay. But I still think I could live without them.

I kindly direct you to Baccano!, Cowboy Bebop, Genshiken, FLCL and any Miyazaki movie. Dubs are infinitely superior to subs in all of em.

I said yea myself. As a fan of anime I'm quite content with subs. I'll cite Pan's Labyrinth as well since it was amazing.
Simply put, I must politely disagree. The original audio is the purest form of the anime that can be seen. I simply prefer it.
But then how can you understand what they're saying? Unless you know japanese.

OT: As someone said before, I watch all movies with subtitles, just helps when theres a loud scene and you can't hear what they're saying, or when someone talks in the background.

As I said, I watch my anime with subs. I'm just making the point that, with subs, I get the anime in its' purest form (That actually sounds kind of pompous when I say it now, but I just mean in the way it was originally meant to be watched) and I can still understand it because of them subs.

I like subtitles way more than dubs and I don't think you should disregard a foreign film on the sole basis of language/subtitles. You'd be missing out if you just stuck to films made with your own native tongue besides, you get used to subtitles in like 10 minutes. A favorite film of mine which uses subtitles is Bon Cop Bad Cop, even though half the film is in English. (And of course Pans Labyrinth but that goes without saying).

If the movie is in a foreign language sure, I really don't get people who are bugged by them it really isn't that bothersome even if its in English.
