Swords. I've always liked the more 'traditional' fantasy settings to modern settings such as those found in Call of Duty. Besides, swords are infinitely cooler-looking than guns.
Mostly this because in real life my aim is actually quite bad and this is often reflected when I play video-games where there is no zoom option for ranged weapons, Also guns don't let you pretend to be batman (I play Assassin's creed this way).

In video-games I'd pick swords but in real life and this poll I pick other for sais BO (quarterstaff type thing)and other such that don't see too much time in games but are fun.

I prefer swords because they're just so awesome ;D

In-game i mostly use guns though, swords are always too limited with normal control schemes.

I chose Guns. Why? My friend Indiana Jones will demonstrate:
That's hilarious and also true, in that scenario a gun would most certainly win.

But still, I'm torn. On the one hand practicality says 'use the gun' because it means I don't have to get too close to something trying to kill me. But on the other hand there is a grace and dignity to using a sword and fighting someone face to face that can't be matched in gun play.

So I'm kind of torn.

well.. i was in the army for 6 years.. but i gotta say. when fighting the enemy in real life it's a lot more scary to them when they see a blade at the end of your rifle. and that bayonet is the best way to check to see if the guy you shot is dead. wow that made me sound like a war nutter

(i would use a tatical nuke on a long range missile save the effort or rasin my arm to shoot somebody, and traveling to get him, the lazzy way to win)

also in games i like to use a chainsaw Muha ha ha ha ha

Both at the same time. Nothin' like having the ranged effectiveness of a gun in one hand and having the awesome, close-quarters brutality of a heavy broadsword in the other.

Hm. I'd love to see weapons that aren't as cliche as swords, without being firearms. That said, I'm not a fan of guns in games in general. Unless it's something really unusual. For example, Arcanum, an RPG (that you should play) had a lightning sniper rifle. That was pretty neat.

Hope this isn't getting too off-topic, but one thing that would make me shift way, way further towards the sword side of things? In games, if your weapon has more of an effect than just stats, a gun has more tasks involved. Aiming, reloading, possibly a scope, that sort of thing. It's just more interesting to use. If you have a sword... well, Bethesda games can demonstrate that one. Click, click, click, hit it again. This is why I often go for magic in fantasy RPGs, by the way. Much more fun.

Now, a game with a decent sword-fighting (or just the melee weapon of your choice) system? I'd love to play that. In fact, if anyone knows a game with something like this - say, even, just a fencing mechanic - please let me know.

Aaaand I'd best shut up now. Rambling again, sorry.

If I had to decide, which weapon I'd like to use, I'd choose gun. That's obvious... until I run out of bullets.
I like both. That'd make, a gun with a bayonet. Or a gun with more 'modern' version of bayonet - that is, a chainsaw-bayonet (Gears of War?).

But in terms of being "cool", swords win.

definitely sword. guns make no difference if u correctly ambush where distance is not a factor :p

Only thing better would be a gun blade. That would win hands down

For thousands of year, a warrior only drew the blood of his enemy by the strength of his arm. This was true for bows and siege engines as well as swords and other blades.

Now all you have to do is point and squeeze your finger a bit.

Now, in my opinion these things should both stay apart, unless in some stupid JRPG or wacked out fantasy game. It just seems wierd to have a sword beating a gun, not matter what the situation.

But yeah, I picked the sword. Big fantasy fan, and they just look and feel so much cooler than a hunk of grips, boxes and tubes.

What good is having a sword when there's a sniper 800 meters away using a pinpoint accurate rifle?Death before even hearing it coming.
For the less subtle approach, use a bigger gun in form of artillery.

Also, for the people going on and on about the skill and honor it takes to use a sword, consider the fact using a rifle isn't the easiest thing to operate in the world. The sword wielding warrior didn't need to know how to disassemble his weapon in battlefield condition to clean it because it jammed.Just because its older doesn't mean its more honorable.

Swords, they are more honorable , awesome and stronger.
I mean , have you played L4D2? or Halo 3?
Plus it doesnt run out of ammo.
And you can see your enemy die.

And I do believe one Ashley Williams put it best as well:

Gun beats sword.
Not necessarily, it all depends on how you write your fiction.

You can get the best of both worlds by just have a rifle and bayonet. Although that's more of a spear.

I was looking at my shelf of games, and couldn't help to think that like attracts like. I have way more fantasy games than modern games, for example. This got me thinking. If all games were equal, ie: COD had swords, or Oblivion had guns for example, would it make a difference to the weapons you'd use? Are there any scenarios that alternative weapons would make more enjoyable gameplay?

Note: I'm aware that Fallout is basically Oblivion with guns, but it's hard to think of a recent fantasy game off the top of my head that didn't include guns.
WHY CAN I NOT CHOOSE "GUNBLADE" ON THIS POLL!?
