**** is only an extremely dirty word in England and even there it's only so among upper middle class and higher class (and even they use it occasionally). But anyway, even so, there is not such thing as "going too far" when concerning use of language. But why listen to me when there's Stephen Fry to put it so much more eloquently ^^
****? It is no different from any other swear word, who cares if it is used in video games.
On a side note, is that a bit of a Father Ted reference I see on the end?

Er...it is very commonly used as an insult. "You throw like a girl" is the stereotypical use of that kind of thing, but there are variants.Abengoshis said:

He's going out of his way to be as insulting as he can, so he repeatedly calls them women.
Games, just like movies and books, can use whatever language the author thinks is fitting to the situation. Thats it.
There is a situation for each word where that word becomes appropriate. Hence, why we have that word. Everything else is a matter of choice. Dig your hand into a bag of words, it doesn't really matter. The context and message are the important factors, however some words can be more effective than others given a situation.
Why is **** worse than the rest? I use it all the time, more so than others actually. Anything can happen in a game, why should using **** be left out?

I don't mind a little bit of swearing to add REAL emphasis (like "IT'S ALL SO FUCKING HILARIOUS!" in Metal Gear Solid), regardless of which swear it is.
I have a problem with layers upon layers of swearing, however, because it gets really annoying and immature fast.
For example, the first four minutes of this video is the most earburning sequence in anything ever (you can watch the other six minutes as well if you like electronica, softcore porn and creepiness). Tell me this doesn't either A. annoy you if you're mature, or B. make you laugh like a maniac if you are not.

I dunno, I guess one shouldn't drop a C-bomb unless one is REALLY trying to get a point across or something. Most of the profanity today is so overused it holds little to no meaning anymore. Personally though, if I really "go in for the kill" with swearing I use a little phrase the game Rogue Warrior learned me.

I don't have any problem with the word "****". The only game I've ever heard it used in was "The Darkness". I honestly don't know why people find it more offensive than "dick", but that's just me.
Like it or not, there is a hierarchy, I've tales of older comedy writers trying to get their scripts green lighted at the BBC, and actually having to barter swear words to get things done, in the style of 'ok, if I take out 3 'bloody's can I put back in a bum and a bugger?' 'Regulations say you can't say bugger, but I'll give you two bums and three bastards.'
That was only about 40 years ago, and now '****' is acceptable after 9pm if it's considered a 'reasonable' use.
I don't find swearing offensive, but I DO find lazy, unthinking overuse of swearing tiresome and wasteful. There's also something rather depressing about being on a bus and hearing a 5 year old kid tell his mother to 'fuck off you old ****' then get told 'don't you fucking speak to me like that you little shit!' I wish I was making it up, but I wonder where he got that language from...
Right now I'd say '****' is still the very pinnacle of offensiveness, putting aside specialist terms like '******', yet if we continue to weaken it's power with constant use, we'll lose swearing's power almost completely, or have to find new terms.
To take a more recent example, the series 'Spartacus' made heavy and natural use of all offensively language, along with huge amounts of male and female nudity, sex acts and extreme bloody violence and death. However, to me, somehow they made it feel so natural and normal, that after about half an episode you forgot you were seeing a lesbian threesome while two naked guards talked about the **** they'd get as a reward, and just find yourself drawn into the show, it ended up being as much background noise as horrible curtains would be in a 1907's sitcom.
I realise I have been quite free with the offensive terms here, but, to be fair, if you ignore the warning that the title is, then you earned it.

Cursing in video gamess that are rated T or higher is usually overdone to the point of extreme obnoxiousness. Adding **** would just make it even worse.
No word is 'too far' if used in the right setting and context. The right use of language can make or break a game as far as the narrative is concerned. However '****' is very taboo and would only really feel natural in games with a very adult/dark setting. Like when Pegorino shouts "The world is a ****!" in GTAIV, I could believe this is the sort of person that would have no hang-ups about shouting **** in the middle of a packed street, so it felt natural and worked well as far as character development goes. But on the other hand I can't imagine Marcus Fenix screaming it as he hacks a Locusts head off, due to his military background. It'd just seem crude and cheap.

Want a good example on how to use swearing to fantastic effect? Watch anything with Simon Pegg (Spaced/Shaun of the Dead/Hot Fuzz). The man is a genius on when to use swearing to great comedic effect, without over reliance on it.

OT: It is a really stupid thing to get all worked up for. A four letter word that refers to genitalia? We have a couple of those already, "dick" and "cock" have been around for a while. The we have "fuck" to cover the act of sexual activity, so saying that it's sexual connotation is why people are so offended by it. Hell, a common phrase to use "dick" and "cock" with is, "Suck my dick/cock" which is implying (for lack of better word at the moment) oral sex. I personally think that the worst bit of profanity is "asshole." The rectum is far more disgusting than genitalia. Not to be too disgusting, but during pornography, when the actors discuss anal sex and the female actress says "asshole" I cringe a little on the inside, and this is coming from a guy that is so desensitized to all of humanity's worst "highlights" that I am unfazed by death itself.
I really think the reason people are offended by is because there is a double standard for men and women and the women pretty much always have the advantage. They can call us "dicks" and "cocksuckers" and "assholes" all they want, but when we come up with a profane term for their reproductive organs, all of a sudden it is the worst bit of profanity to ever poison their ears.
