Honestly I haven't been impressed with ES as of yet, but I'm hoping Skyrim changes that...so..yeah.

This is a hard decision. I prefer the Fallout series over Elder Scrolls. Though, since Elder Scrolls is a fantasy game, it seems to have more potential in being an ultimate rpg. I mean, since it's fantasy, there isn't much you can't add to it. With Fallout, things are a bit more set. I mean, you can still do some really cool stuff, and there is cool to be seen, but it doesn't seem like there can be nearly as much.

fallout.

i tried oblivion but quit after 3 hours because it's so big it feels like the world and all its options are suffocating me.

i traded that in for Crackdown 2.

oh. and morrowind also had the same problem. i traded that game in for KOTOR.

i'm not immersed, i'm drowning.
The little oblivion fanboy in me is screaming out, but im shushing him cos thats a very fair point to make and i felt very much the same as i do in alot of open world rpgs, Its too old a game to worry about now but if you get the chance it might be worth trying again and just focusing 100% on the main plot, ignore every little side quest for your first playthrough or atleast until you get comfortable in the world, That way its not overwhelming and considering you picked up KOTOR you clearly have a good taste in rpgs, and TES are really good once you get past the bullshit.

huh.. Guess i cant really shush the fanboy in me -.-
oh by GOD i want to get into that game.
the first time i played fallout it nearly suffocated me, but i gave it another chance and boom, i was hooked for the next hundred hours or so.

next time i get paid i'm going to give it another chance (this would be the third btw, i first bought it for PC and that's when i became a console boy because it crushed my hopes and dreams of being able to play good-looking games on a PC...)

skyrim is something i'll be looking into as well. regardless of whether or not i got into any elder scrolls game before. i'm willing to give it a chance just because its a fantasy RPG, and i always buy those.

the first and last fantasy RPG that hooked me so thoroughly that i was willing to buy anything even REMOTELY western RPG-ish was Fable 2, but after that it's been a LOOOOOONG string of crushed dreams from the moment i'm given freedom... starting with Oblivion, then Morrowind. Then Dragon Age. Then Diablo.

but Fable had such an impact on me that i was willing to give them all a good long try before i walked away with my head down. and i still try all their sequels, regardless of how bad the previous one crushed my dreams. so that's why Skyrim is still one of my most anticipated games (not above Saints Row and Mass Effect, though. those would be tough to beat)

I like them both, but they're different enough that it wouldn't work if you fused them. Though putting V.A.T.S. into an Elder Scrolls setting would be kind of cool, maybe allow you to set the path of your blade to bypass armor (go for the joints in the armor to sever forearms) or shields, or maybe plant an arrow into the eye of a large creature to blind/stun it.

In the end it doesn't really matter, seeing as both have pros and cons. I will admit that I do love using magic, and bludgeoning someone to death with a mace is just awesome. While at the same time shooting someone in the face with a shoutgun never gets old.

fallout.(puts on hipster glasses: i liked and played fallout before it was popular) but yeah while i do appreciate a good fantasy game. the fallout universe is so rich, diverse and varied. iv always had a fondness for everything postapocliptic. iv always thought it would be cool to be a lawman in a law-less world dispensing justice from the barrel of a gun.

good times were had wandering the capital wastes listing to butcher Pete on my pipboy while gunning a raider down with my laser rifle as my duster billows in the wind.

The Elder Scrolls, because it's not shitting all over someone else's game

Edit: I assumed you were asking which betheseda game I preferred. If we are talking about the entire Fallout series then without a doubt I perfer fallout. Though that was probably pretty obvious

Personally, I would have to go with a bit of a mixture. As far as setting I think a futuristic Elder Scrolls would be a lot of fun. As far as game play I would lean a bit more to Elder Scrolls because (at least with Oblivion, I haven't played the others) there isn't a cap on how skilled your character can become and your skill in something is based on how often you use that skill. A really cool feature that I would like, is at that the beginning of the game, to be able to choose whether or not the world around you levels.

You should try to play Oblivion a little more, once you get a nicely rounded character you can really find yourself immersed in the world and it's lore.

Tried Oblivion, can't get into it. Played Fallout 3 and New Vegas, LOVE THEM.
Don't get me wrong, I still intend on at least finishing Oblivion... I want to at least have SOME context going into Skyrim which looks really cool.

EDIT: I forgot to put why. Fallout just has a lot more personality in my eyes. The 50s style of certain objects and the music really do it for me, and the game is pretty funny at times, despite the premise being kinda depressing.

Until Fallout lets me use magic, Elder Scrolls.

My first Western fantasy setting RPG of many was Elder Scrolls. And I daresay the most original take of the ones I've played. Orcs are civilized, elves are divided, and dwarves are basically extinct.
Until TES lets me use guns, Fallout.

My first Western post-apocalyptic setting RPG of many was Wasteland (Fallout's spiritual predecessor). And I daresay the most original take of the ones I've played. People are uncivilized, ghouls are divided, and robots are basically eternal.

Yeah, I didn't stop because I didn't like it. I don't have an XBox; I was just playing it while over at a friend's house

For me the Elder Scrolls comes out as a clear favorite, don't get me wrong I loved fallout 3 to pieces but their just isn't enough really good fantasy games anymore.

I always have games with guns, I next to never get to wield a sword and magic in a game i'd class as good anymore. Its all about escapism, and the elder scrolls offer one of the most deep and engaging worlds you could hope for. For me in a way it's escapism from yet another brown based shooter (loved fallout 3 still though).

Fallout 3 and NV always just felt like a lesser port of Oblivion to me, just the same but worse in pretty much every way. Something that bothered me about Oblivion was that I could be stood there, repeatedly slashing a guy and it would take about 100 hits to kill him, but when that becomes 100 shots to the face, it just goes beyond ridiculous.

Plus Fallout pretty much just misses out on magic, one of the best things to mess around with on Oblivion, which also leads to an (almost) complete lack of original weapons in the wasteland. Add the fact that the main form of combat in Fallout 3 and NV is ranged, something that the Gamebryo engine has never done well, and the only reason left to choose Fallout is the world if you prefer it. I do not.

If the older games are taken into account then that makes the decision even easier for me, because Daggerfall and Morrowind just blew Fallout 1 and 2 out of the water as far as I am concerned.
