What defined it? People. Primarily with their reaction to them. Otherwise, it is just a disc.

Oh you want a specified game?

NO! you get 3.

Birthed it? Doom. Enough said.

Defined it? Halo (specifically 2 when console multiplayer became widespread and increased the popularity of shooters across the board)

Redefined it? Bioshock. Proper shooter with hybrid elements of RPGs with in depth and cohesive story and char building it has advanced the genera as a whole, because some people who wont play a shooter, will play bioshock willingly.

EDIT: you could argue that Kill.Switch redefined it, with the advent of the cover system, or gears of war with perhaps the fluidity and need to utilize the cover system. I personally wouldnt, but it is a valid argument.

Halo definitely set new trends in the FPS genre. Its up to you to decide whether they were good or not.

Well there are two, Wolfenstain 3D (shoot, shoot, kill FPS) and Half Life (think, shoot, read story, think FPS)

Doom. Wolfenstein was first true, but Doom defined it. The multiple different weapons each useful in different situation, varied enemies and sprawling maps all these were Doom's doing.

Oh. Didn't notice there was supposed to be a poll. If there can only be one, then I guess I'd pick Wolfenstein as well. Doom was excellent, but I believe it was inspired by Wolfenstein. I wonder what Goldeneye would have been like if those games were never made.

Doom, no contest. From a pure game mechanics standpoint Doom still stands with 'modern' fps games, which is sad for the FPS genre I guess, but impressive for Doom.

You may have heard somewhere that BioShock was a spiritual successor to a certain series...

I think Doom did. Halo defined the FPS on the console, but did not define the FPS genre in general. So yeah, I think it was Doom.

Goldeneye easily. The customizable multiplayer was actually fun.
Slappers only + license to kill= pants pissing laughter.

Doom made it
Unreal Tournament tried to do what Halo is doing
Half Life fixed that
Halo (like I said)
CoD is ripped from MoH
Unreal Tournament, PC release November 30, 1999
Halo: Combat Evolved, release November 15, 2001

But what ever. Might be true, but I played both and didn't see much more similarities than they were both fun as hell and FPSs that threw bunch of people on other side and bunch of people to other side and gave tons of weapons and said "go for it".

For me it was Wolfenstein 3D [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfenstein_3D] and later Doom, although it was more like sprites moving on those times than 3D. When 3D came it was quake for me. Unreal Tournament 2003 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unreal_Tournament_2003] was really fun to play when it came. Never got to the Halo thing. Also Soldier of Fortune 2 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldier_of_Fortune_II:_Double_Helix] was a game that I played a lot in multiplayer. Now I could say that Half Life is the basis for single player and Team Fortress 2 for multiplayer. I played lot s of Counter Strike but I never got used to the not spawning all the time. Got bored. Perhaps I am just over active.

Counter-Strike was my first FPS, so for me it was that one. But we're not talking personal here I guess, so I have no idea =p.
Well I bet there is no right answer as this is a poll (or that the OP intended) And it is basicly what people got to their hands at the first place :)

Wolfenstein invented it and DOOM codified it, but Half-life perfected it and created the modern genre. Floating weaspons and power-ups? Gone. 60 MPH running speed? Gone. Game-breaking shotgun and rocket launcher? Balanced. Without DOOM there would be no serious sam or Goldeneye, but without Half-life, none of those other entries would even exist.

Defined it?

Dungeon Master [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeon_Master_%28video_game%29] ('87)

Wolfenstein 3D had the basic archetype ('92)

Doom popularised it.('93)

Quake 2 was the first to have true 3D. ('97)

You could also argue for 3D Monster Maze ('81) being the first 3D maze roving game.

Old arcade shooters/Operation Wolf - Wolfenstein 3D - Doom is my holy trinity that emerged from chaos and showed to mortals the wonders of shooting other's heads off. That was the begining, and not much changed since then really. Probably should save a honorable spot for first Quake as well considering i spent countless hours back in my study days, playing it over schools lan.
