Hate it.

Zelda is for kids. People shouldn't be enjoying Zelda past about age 15. I was watching my sister play Twilight Princess recently, and I can find things that STILL HAVE NOT CHANGED SINCE 19 FUCKING 98. Or 1980 whatever the fuck it was when the NES version came out. It doesn't change. Kids don't like change. It's marketed to a young audience.

The last Zelda game I enjoyed was Majora's Mask. I was 11 at the time. I've played OoT again, Wind Waker, and watching my sister play Twilight Princess, I just see so little change. The setting might be different, but the feeling is the same. The weapons are the same. The process of acquiring the weapons is the same. There's just no change whatsoever. Even the fucking music is the same. I swear I heard the Great Fairy music from the Great Fairy grottos in OoT in Twilight Princess.

So I say... Zelda is for kids and manchildren. I outgrew it long ago and now despise it for not growing up with me.
There is one MAJOR thing that the Legend of Zelda series does right, and should be replicated in FAR more games, the only one that I know of being Demon's Souls and its successor, Dark Souls: Targeting-based fighting. Locking on to one enemy, moving around that enemy, rolling, attacking when a spot is open, etc. Few other sword-based games do that with the finesse that LoZ does.

Because in the overmap, you had to figure out how to get past object X, or how to get to the next dungeon. And in the dungeon, you had to figure out how to get to the boss.

Though I can see this actually happening less in Zelda games.
Well what else would you do?
I mean... really I have no idea any suggestions?
I thought so none at all.
I donno, story/character dev? lol? Combat mechanics?

When you have something good going for a game, like the puzzle formula in LoZ, why on earth deviate? Improve upon, IMO.
They did all of that you are just to jaded to realize it and they are still improving upon it.
The basics are important to build off of after all.
I was referring to more recent titles, after OoT and Majora's, and I disagree. That game (youtube link), it hasn't been released yet... So I can't say I've played it. It's probably not a good idea to raise your hopes so much, they are trying some new things with that game it seems and may not live up to, well, large expectations.

it was the FIRST game i ever played. The legend of Zelda: Link to the Past. i played it over and over and over. and even now, as i play my Xbox 360, with shooters, every now and then, i stop, pull out my Nintendo Wii, and play Ocarina of time, link to the past, and Twilight princess. Because of Zelda, i will always be a Nintendo fan at heart, no matter what epic games Xbox brings out..... unless they bring out Starcraft: GHOST lol

It...sickens you to see people enjoy different types of games? You're an odd person...
(Nice avatar, by the way. Frog is awesome)
No what i meant by sicken me, is that they praise each and ever coming Zelda game or in fact Nintendo games like the second coming of Christ. Yet they continuously rip on other IP's for giving Sequels or Remakes. Its a pretty clear example of hypocrisy but despite my input they refuse to fully acknowledge it. This is probably due to Nostalgia and its pretty crippling to better judgement IMO.

And Zelda games were always at their core action-adventure were they not? With probably a exceptions the series was always known to be grounded in this genre.

Since this is becoming round-about; my friends are being nostalgia-freaks and are not putting games such as Zelda up to today standard. Because of this the series has from what it seems to be a yearly occurrence and they are baffled i dont share their enthusiasm.

Hate it, if the combat was a larger part of the game I might have liked it.

It tries to be an rpg but it's just a series of puzzle games.

I have certainly had fun with the franchise but to be perfectly honest, I am well and truly done with it. Aside from the jump to "3d" nearly fifteen years ago, the game has no changed appreciably from the original incarnation. There's only so many times I can bother with a reskinned version of a game I've played before and I think I reached that point years ago.

Ive only ever played Wind Waker on the gamecube. I admit I loved it quite a bit, cartoon link is adorable, the open world feels enormous and ripe for exploration. But I hear the series is always like that, kinda in the call of duty syndrome of releasing the same game over and over. If thats the case then I have to criticize Nintendo for lack of creativity and inovation, but I cant say the series is bad, its fun, and what the hell else can you want from a game?
Not that Im ever buying any other Zelda, I don't intend to waste my money on a Nintendo console anytime soon. Unless the Wii U blows my socks off.

I have always found the games to be quite fun, and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time and Majora's mask are among my favourite games on the N64 and are my favourites in the entire series, closely followed by Link to the past. I can happily sit and play them, but I won't necessarily go out of my way to go and own the games or anything.

I think it's definitely a franchise for the people who grew up with it. I grew up playing Banjo, Spyro, and Crash. I tried playing a Zelda game after I beat DarkSiders, because I kept hearing how much the two were alike. I gave it 4 hours before dropping it, which is four times the time it took for DarkSiders to grab me. The lack of graphical power I could understand, due to age. But combat was boring, story was uninteresting, and the voice acting was no where near as good. I don't hate it, I don't think it's a "bad" game. But it doesn't hold up to today's standards unless you're wearing nostalgia goggles.

Why do I like it? Fun action, interesting plot, challenging puzzles(damn water temple), likeable characters and a fantastical setting that has a classical feel to it, but with hints of something otherworldly, something magical.
Love the entire series, love the re-make and can't wait for Skyward Sword

I enjoy playing Zelda, but I'm meh. I'm waiting for them to stop releasing OoT and try and twist the series in a new direction. A new plot line wouldn't hurt anyone ('start off, bad stuff happens, meet princess, collect item series A (eg. Jewels is OoT, Fused Shadows in TP, Pearls in WW), collect item series B (eg. medallions in OoT, Mirror Fragments in TP, Master Sword Power-ups/Triforce in WW) , fight through last dungeon, fight boss, end' is starting to get stale), and I think it would be interesting if they could make a female counterpart to Link you could play, just for the hell of it XD They also need to try and find a way to break the 'Fire Temple', 'Water Temple' etc once in a while. Although it might ruin it a little.

Overall, throw everything in the air and try something new XD

I like the series mostly because there's not any other fantasy game series that DOESN'T scream "We were 'inspired' by J.R.R. Tolkien!" about a thousand times. In about every fantasy game dwarfs are short, elves are magical, and humans are dicks. It's getting really annoying. Oh, also all of the Zelda games are extremely well designed and every individual game has it's own unique charm to it.

I Have always been a rampant Zelda fan. Watching my dad defeat Ganon's temple at the age of 5 (to my father's regret) is what made me into the gamer I am today. Along with Mario and Super Smash Bros, The Legend of Zelda I what compels most Nintendo fans to buy the next system again and again. I love the series for still being a shining example for how to make a game right and I know others love the series for various reasons.

However, There are also plenty of people who don't share my enthusiasm and generally criticize the series for always having the same plot every game, "SAVE THE PRINCESS". Personally I find it strange when the plot for every FPS out there is "SHOOT STUFF". [See it's 1 less word than Zelda!]

Yet in honor of the series for enriching gamers lives for 25 years, I'd like to ask the gaming community what makes them either play or avoid The Legend of Zelda.
I was also quite the Zelda fan, but like you said in you second paragraph, the plot is almost the same for each game. I just feel Zelda needs to do something new, and I mean groundbreaking for the series. I dont know what that is, but to me, almost each game feels the exact same as the one before it (save Link's Awakening, the oracle games for the GBA and Majora's Mask, which after OoT, are my favorite games.)

Well I'm glad you're around to make that determination for all of us. I knew things had to be only a matter of black or white. Thank you good ser, your passed judgement has opened my eyes and I can now become a man.

The Zelda series has come very far from its humble roots, and hopefully continues to improve.

That being said, of course I love the series.

There are people who genuinely hate Zelda? I'm shocked. I'm gonna buy the 3ds OOT rerelease myself.

I play Legend of Zelda because it gives you some action and you have to solve puzzle which some are hard and some are easy. I play the the new ones like Spirit Tracks which was good. Although it was a save the princess Zelda one like most Zelda games. With Phantom Hourglass it was save Tetra with having a ship and the spirits you had to rescue but Tetra is Zelda so it's another save Zelda game.
