Let me see ... It has been almost 4 years since TF2 came out ... Most of the game's fans are asking Valve for a TF3 ... So , really ... Isn't Valve getting TF2 into Free to Play a sign they are ( already or thinking about ) getting their hands into a new TF3 project?. Came on , use your Mathematical Logic skills ...
To be frank, you're the first one I even hear making any mention of TF3, and I've been on various forums where TF2 gets discussed, and played on many servers of a variety of skill levels, I've even done competitive. And out of all these people I've played and/or discussed TF2 with, you're the first to express any wish for a straight sequel. Why would they need to? TF2 isn't dead, it's still an ongoing project, and they're clearly showing that they haven't done everything with it that they want to do with it.

There's still room for innovations, whether they lie in new quirky maps or whole new game modes, but there still are things to be done with TF2. Not to mention, making a whole new game is expensive, it's much more profitable for them to just make new maps, items and modes for TF2 and reap the benefits from the boosts in sales (or Mann co. purchases now). And there's still tens of thousands of people playing TF2 now, and with the advent of free to play there's thousands more joining the party. Many of which will be willing to bust out their credit cards for microtransactions.

So really, ~if~ Valve is going to make a TF3 I don't think they'll even start on it for another two years since they're still dedicated to improving and expanding on TF2. And really, what could they do with a full on sequel that they couldn't do in TF2? They can't afford to break away from the art style because people ~love~ the current cast, and for that art style the 2007 Source engine is still more than serviceable.

I welcome being able to play a game I always had interest in but never thought I would actually get, and I am sure many other people do, too.

You are focusing on the bad players, like most people on XBL, even though that is fairly crammed with your stereotypical 9 year-old gamer.

So let me get this straight after skipping 12 pages of the thread. The OP and people like them are bitching that Valve has allowed anyone with an internet connection to play their game? A game they have been selling for four years now, and updated completely for free the entire time?

It's people like the OP who are the reason most developers can't give us nice things; because people will complain about it constantly.

As for the $20 thing, how is this any different from the numerous times it was offered for $2.50?

At any rate: Who cares, they finally released a new "Meet The." Now all that's left is the Pyro. I'm taking bets on what will come first: HL2E3/HL3 or "Meet the Pyro."
I paid the $2.50 but my laptop can barely run it. It's playable but framerate issues and stuff. Though I play it to death on the Xbox 360(Laugh all you want, I love that version).
SO I paid $2.50 for it...Should I demand a refund like those who paid $20 or $49.99?

I love this entitlement crap the game community has exploded into. First the Minecraft rage over how long updates took, now this. You deserve more for buying the game for $20? When did you buy it? Cause if you've had it over a month, you already paid less than if it were subscription based like an MMO. You already paid less than those of us who supported the game from the start and got it for $50 in the Orange Box. Valve didn't even have to give you a goofy hat to show you were an old supporter, they didn't have to do shit. They supported the game far beyond the call of duty, and continue to do so.

It was basically a good business decision. If they make more money per month on store sales than on sales of the core game, then making the game free to increase the number of players and potential buyers of cheaper goods once they see how good the game is a good idea.

I've heard a lot of spite over free players, which I find to be a bit frustrating personally. sure, free players didn't pay an upfront fee first, but aside from that a new free player would be just like a new player was before; inexperienced, easy to kill and may or may not be annoying depending on the person.

I've been working on learning the game, so as to improve and contribute to matches in a positive way. So far it's gone about thusly:

*yawn* Are people surprised that some people feel this way? I mean, it's still super dumb, but it's not a huge surprise.

May have been said, but I wonder how many people have downloaded TF2 because it was this thread that told them it was free-to-play. Probably a couple at least.

edit: Also, you know what the appropriate action to take when "something sucks now" is? Pretty simple: stop playing.

Players who have had it longer actually get more than just a hat. And the items allowed variety to to the game. And while I seriously hate rolling a crate in the random drop department i just give them away to those who will use them. Honestly how does more content hurt a game?

I have more weapons now to play with so if I feel like it. You can always use extra items you get as crafting materials for newer/better weapons. And each weapon changes the way one should play the class. Nothing wrong with extra content unless it screws game balance and valve has had a history of fixing that (They killed natascha remember).

Here is the thing not everyone likes tf2. Some are going to install it play it for a week and they are going to decide to either stay or quit. Its free so it doesn't hurt them. And really griefing is counterable on pc. You couldn't counter anyone on the console version and the griefing was worse (skywalking, Digging in walls, spies in the spawn, sealing spawn doors, etc). So I wouldn't worry about it. And while I hate the fact that my favorite server is now busy and full almost All the time now it is inconvenient its understandable.

We got a hat, bigger backpacks and access to premium items. Plus we can coach newer players for better items. Stop whining at least you got something. While I would have preffered a crate key over a hat (they never really mattered to me but its nice to have them every now and then) I'm just glad I have more privileges than the F2p players.

Oh and unlocks don't hurt game balance the weapons each have their draw backs.

It's fucking annoying that I paid good money for it and I'm not getting any form of compensation...
Free hat and continued game support perhaps?
You and I have very different understandings of the word, compensation... ;)
Why do would you get any compensation? You bought the game, you got the game. You got what you bought and that others later got it does not in any way change what you chose to buy. Do you whine when a store lowers the price on something you bought too? If I bought a chair and the guy who made it later in life decided to give them away instead, do I deserve some kind of compensation for paying for it? No!
This is more of a rant than an argument XD and I do whine when stores lower the price after I buy summat, especially when I pay full price for something that appears in the Steam Sale the next day XDXD Do you want to know why? Because it's annoying.

Also imagine this (hypothetical example) one of your mates is selling something you want, he offers you £30 for it and you take it because you want it, he then turns around and gives the same thing to someone else for free, but refuses to give you your £30 back, wouldn't that annoy you? Maybe we should try that example out on you to ensure we get scientific results...
But that is not exactly what happened here. Here you buy something for X dollars; then they decide to offer that something with trade and inventory restrictions for free. You could have gotten it free, but this way, you instead get full inventory and trading abilities, and a hat.
