Gonna preempt this by saying I DON'T want it to become another one of those "JUST USE ADBLOCK" / BANHAMMER threads.

Just thought I'd voice my opinion that I, at least, find these gigantic hover ads, which block half my screen and force me to pixel-hunt for a tiny X, to be obscenely, ridiculously irritating. They make me want to read The Escapist / play [Insert Game] less. Advertising is all well and good when it doesn't obstruct usability. Banner ads? Cool. Hover ads off to one side of the screen? Okay, sure. But this shit's getting ridiculous.

Please tell me I'm not alone.

EDIT: Mods saw this thread and fixed it. You should all PM Susan Arendt and Nasrin a thank-you note for being so boss, and then become Publisher's Club Members. That is...if you think you're cool enough...

I've always hated large, flash based ads. Especially the ones that move, or darken the rest of the screen, and extra especially the ones that lock the screen down until you close the ad.

But the escapist wants to make money, so what can we do except grumble.

Well, as I haven't seen any of these ads, at all, and yet I'm not part of the Publisher's Club and I am completely AGAINST the use of Ad-blockers, it can't be as much a problem as you're making out. Unless it's region-specific, in which case thank the Gods I live in the UK...

Eh, they support the Escapist so I can't complain. If you really want to get rid of them, become a publisher. It isn't too expensive, gets rid of your ads and supports the Escapist.

I haven't seen these ads either, and I also live in the UK. Clearly, this is just more proof that England is the best country in the world.

Copied from the other current thread on the matter:

I've yet to see this. I don't mind the ads before the videos...My only complaint there is that I wish they'd employ a little variety.

The ones that annoy me are the ones that turn the background into a giant link. I play my games with Chrome up in the background so I can easily switch whatever I'm listening to, so I always end up opening one of those pages.

Then again, if they get money for every click, I guess that's not TOO bad...

OH SHIT ONE JUST POPPED UP AS I WAS TYPING. God prove my point why don't you?

Seriously, "one click and play dead space 2, no registration". Well no duh, I've owned Dead Space 2 for months now, of course I don't need to sign up to play it.
Now will you please just sod off?

Makes me want to download FireFoxes 'NO ADS EVER' plugins.

"I zee nothing."

But seriously only thing I've noticed is the Escape to the Movies having not only the border ad but an ad before the video, I hope this isn't a trend because I don't really care for sites that have an over abundance of invasive ads. I understand you need revenue but all the time every time is a bit much.

You've just made me very glad I became a PubClub member, I've never seen an ad that big on this site and I'm glad, too many other sites have them and they're just obnoxious.

@robcoxxy Yes. Thank you. Not quoting because if I have to look at Sheperd's face one more time I might just shit.

And the way they just jump out with no warning whatsoever...

There comes a point when adverts are just a bit too invasive.

Still, I prefer this to those blasted buzzing mosquito banner ads that were around a few years ago. Those made me want to kill something.

Seeing as how my 27" monitor displays at a resolution of 2560x1440, these ads have been sort of annoying but nothing overbearing. It's nothing 3 or 4 seconds of waiting and a swift click on the "X" button couldn't take care of.

Well, it could have to do with the fact that ads are different here in Sweden, but i haven't stumbled across any of these yet. I can see that they could be quite annoying though.

I just wish they had a system in place similar to Facebook where I could tell them that I don't ever intend to play those games so that they could show me ads more pertinent to me. The Escapist has to make money, and ads are the way to do it. It just feels like a waste seeing ads for the same products I'm not going to buy over and over though.
