So I'm up at my uncles house for the holidays, and he is a heavy tech guy. He loves his mac, loathes windows, but is a totally awesome dude and one of the most respected persons in my life. So for Xmas he got me a crappy e-machines pre-built, micro ATX board, 320 gig hard drive, sub-par processor, nonexistent graphics, etc etc.

He bundled it with a guide to Ubuntu, and told me that he had wiped Windows 7 off of it, and just installed ubuntu, which is my primary use of linux now. Well, it's been a few days and I am hooked. Apt-get makes life easy, chmod makes my porn inaccessible to others, and just all around, as I am getting the grips of it I am loving it more and more. (While at the same time questioning the efficiency of Windows... at this point Windows is more for games primarily with Linux being my main OS)

So anyway, I was wondering how many of the Escapists are tech savvy, Linux fans, window lovers, mac enthusiasts or w.e. There are no real official polls on this stuff since Linux OS in general are totally open source, with no activation requirements, and so many people use windows and mac without activation and whatnot either.

So, simple categories, tried to include all I could. Happy day after Xmas everyone! (Yes I still call it Xmas i don't care what Yahoo! says.)

Well at the moment I'm using Windows but lately I've been wondering if switching to Ubuntu is worth it. I seem to be having a lot of problems with Windows and I'm almost fed up with it. I am also poor so that has greatly swayed my decision. But I'm also thinking is it worth it. At the moment I don't really care but Windows is starting to be a ***** again so maybe a change is in the air.

Edit: One question, is Ubuntu good for gaming?

There needs to be an "all of them option"

well, technically I'm only using windows and mac at the moment because my mac's hard drive crashed and the new one won't let me partition it without formating my drive and I can't back it up unless I format my external hard drive and I really can't be bothered to buy a new external hard drive just so I can run Ubuntu and risk the chance that something might go horribly wrong and I wont be able to restore my files after formating the drive

Your uncle loves Macs? Does he know Apple just took the prize for the second year in a row for being the fastest to hack?

I don't mean to flame, I'm just in a pissy mood, but that is a fact.

Anyways, I use Windows. I have used Linux a bunch (Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint) because I am in college for IT stuff, and I currently have all three loaded onto VirtualBox on my computer. When my Windows 7 beta expires, I think I am going to switch to Mint.

I doubt he cares about hacking, he just likes Macs because its basically Windows with the ability to geek out when you want to.

But I actually did not know that. What was first... Windows? Because since they are the only two real retail OS's, doesn't that mean Mac was also the slowest to hack... I really don't know.

No. You misread what I wrote. Apple was the easiest to hack two years in a row. It was easier to hack than Windows. Actually, Windows did okay...for a Microsoft product.

And no, Macs are nothing like Windows with the ability to geek. I could go into detail, but I feel I have just proven myself far too nerdy already.

I'd recommend mint instead, it's basically a cleaner, better ubuntu. Good place to start with linux.

Using wine, you can run most current games with a bit of tweaking. Steam can be.....problematic. I use an XP drive just for steam & games, *nix for all else.

Forget DirectX10+ games on linux for the time being, though...

Would it just be better to get Windows 7 when I can afford it then? Because if it means a lot of assing about then that might be easier in the long run.

If you just want to game, you wont get a huge performance boost using linux, and it does take a bit more know-how to set up. Just use win7 if gaming is all you want.

Do you want free, opensource OS's and software? Do you want to learn about software, or just get free alternatives to photoshop, imovies, MSoffice, cakewalk, fruityloops, ect.ect.ect....?
Then do try it.

Ubuntu can be good for gaming, if you set it up properly, I never got the hang of it and just kept a windows partition on my drive for games, now I am just back to windows, although i upgraded to 7

Uh... yeah well if you want go ahead. I have always been a windows user, and am just now picking up this Linux stuff so. I might ask him later about the whole hacking deal but I'm fairly sure he just uses it because he just flat out doesn't like how Windows works, the crapware they include, IE as opposed to Safari, etc etc.
