I actually know the history behind valentines day.. Did I tell you I hated my time at a catholic school?
I believe Valentine's Day was created by women, to get free shit from men. May sound sexist, and it probably is, but hey, I can deal with that. If they want free shit I'll make something for free and give it to them, I lose nothing, and they get to feel they got something special.

I just hate it because I've never had a girlfriend on Valentine's Day. Other times yes, but not on that one day. However, I still believe in it, because I'm a romantic at heart and would love to spend that day with that special someone. It just hasn't happened yet.
Eh, it's good to have a day where you recognize your significant other. Anniversaries, birthdays, it's all good. What's wrong with spreading some love? You can shit on it all day, say it's commercialized, redundant, whatever, but at the end of it all it really ain't a bad thing. A day to show some love. Call the whambulance.

Why the hell are people getting so bent out of shape about this? If you're lonely, figure out what you're doing wrong and improve your life instead of wallowing in self-pity all the time. If you don't like how commercialized Valentine's Day is, don't buy anything. If you're in a relationship where somebody's going to be angry that you didn't get them a present or expects you to put out if your present is over a certain price, get the fuck out of that relationship.
Valentine's Day is a great excuse to spend some quality time with the lady friend (or guy friend if that's your thing). Like any other holiday, it's just what you make of it.

I hate the holiday since i see it as a purely a materialistic thing. Will buy a gift to the girl I like though to not seem like a bad cheap guy.

I don't know much about the history of it, but it is a christian holiday correct?
I avoid all the christian holidays I can, which works out to be pretty much all of them except Christmas.
Religion aside, I think the idea of setting a specific day for something like love is a bit silly, when you could instead display your love for someone whenever you damn well please.
Well, since Rain is taken, and I'm apparently going through with this anyway despite what I just said. My Escapist Valentine will be Taxi Driver.
