Timed Missions - Feeling too free? Tired of taking your time to explore and admire a scenario. Then the Timed mission is the one for you (And YES this is inclusive of the underwater segments in Sonic the Hedgehog - does anyone else still receive those wonderful nightmares involving that bloodcurdling timer music?)
OH GOD THAT MUSIC, NOOOOOOOO!!!!! I WANT TO LIVE! I WANT TO LIVE!!! AAAAGH (Babbles to himself in a corner for three straight days)

Yes I hate timed missions, especially with stupid open world games that have plenty of people that seem to drive with the sole intent of stopping your vehicle or destroying it. I recently earned a new hatred og those challenges given out by Fiona in Mercs 2, for some reason. Actually, I think the Mercenaries games have more than sould be deemed legal (including a TIMED ESCORT MISSION, I'll just let that sink in), at least in the first game all I had to do was put on invincibility and get into a helicopter and solve every one.

EDIT: Waiting in the lobby is ok as long as you can easily mute people:)

None of the above. I go with the "YPIIAC" route. What is that an acronym for? "Your princess is in another castle."

You go through hours of work, beat the game (or so you think) only to realize there's still about three quarters of the game left.

Nothing in any game makes me scream "SON OF A *****!" more than this aspect.

Grinding can be fun if you do it on the right games. In Fallout 3 I used to hunt Deathclaws to help me lvel up. It was challenging and fun and yet it was basically doing the same thing over and over. *spot deathclaw, cripple deathclaw leg, finish deathclaw*
Wait. Grind in Fallout 3? Did we play the same game? Sure, I did a lot of pretty samey shoot out sequences with super mutants, but it was all while trying to get from one place to another or clear out some ruins I haven't been to yet. I got to level 20 without even trying just by exploring the world. I never left town with the intent to kill things to level up, since that pretty much happened on its own while I was wandering aimlessly.

Heh yeah I never went out of my way to find baddies until near the end when I was trying to up my stats.
My quest Log was always filled up with side quests//missions etc as well so I was never short on XP :)

On a sidenote - I recently went back to a previous save game just to watch the nuke go off in Megaton. absolutely beautiful rendering, Most convincing Nuke I've seen in any game!

I'm torn between flashlight task, escort missions, and timed missions. But if I have to pick, I'll pick timed tasks. HATE timed missions with the fire of a thousand suns. Hate them even more if they're co-op, because that just leads to a lot of screaming. (Driving task in Halo CE and Halo 3, you can fuck right off!)

Not fond of the escort crap either, though. Especially when they walk some meandering path to nowhere (MMOs, I'm looking at you) that makes absolutely no logical sense, unless their purpose actually is to pull every single mob in the room onto my very squishy glass cannon of a caster.

I don't really mind grind all that much, though, long as the combat's interesting or I get a decent reward out of it. And I know when it's going to end. I'd much rather deal with "kill 12 bears" than "find 12 gobwhozzles, each of which only has a 4% drop rate so you might be here 10 minutes, and you might be here for the rest of the god damned week".

Fair enough, I'll agree defense sucks in FPS games. The only exception I've seen is Counter-Strike, but then you're facing a small number of highly-skilled (in theory) opponents rather than endless hordes. Defense missions I like in RTS games though, in part because I like to see just how absurdly painful I can get my defenses to be (or if I can just rush and take out the enemy base instead of defending, thus eliminating all threats with 15:00 left on the timer, a la Starcraft campaign).
Not endless hordes really, I watched a friend near the end having to defend himself against several invincible enemies waiting for NPCs do do shit. Also at one point you have to use a giant turret thing to shoot asteroids; it's not as fun as it sounds really, rather tedius seeing as poor Isaac has no combat or artillery training and the asteroids move ridiculously fast (yeah, not really important spoilers there).
I gotta admit, those asteroid blasting missions were my one problem with Dead Space.

Add "timed missions that require you to have attempted it a million times before and memorised the correct way of completing it" and I'll vote.

Damn I hate those.
DAMMIT! How could I forget?
Well, I edited the poll and added that in but it hasn't shown up as a poll option yet?!

That was a nightmare. I was escorting one guy who had a shotgun (it was a while ago). I went down a narrow hallway full of nothing. He went into an open area populated by several hundred flesh eating monsters. I was so glad when he got munched on as that was one less stupid person in the world.

I can't choose between Grinding or Timed Missions. grinding is usually incredibly boring and I resent doing it. Timed missions irritate me, as I usually like taking my time with things. Where's the fun in stealthily infiltrating the enemy camp when you only have 5 minutes before your allies get blown up?

Bahaha that was a lovely little scenario I just played out in my mind, though the heads of your AI buddies were replaced with LOLcats :D

I thought some of those challenges were kinda fun at first... then the resentment began.

Oh and RE: Your Avatar - nice to see some people keeping the Rare love alive!
I recently bought JFG for 64, having never played it, but it's taking me a while to get into it. I always compare all of Rares games to Banjo-Kazooie so it's easy to see why lots of them fall a bit short.

Babysitting. Anyone remember that Level of Max Payne 2 where you have escort that dude in the "Captain Baseballbat-Boy" suit.
Hated that soooooo much.
Was close with drowning music from Sonic though.

Time missions... I never feel like I get to do what I want when I want so it wouldn't make sense. I never failed these type of missions besides running out of time. And most, if not all, the time the only strategy to beat it is blitzing and that's very limiting. My second least favorite one is babysitting because all the enemies focus on it so you could never distract any enemies. That and the target always does something retarded to get himself killed or stuck. I also seem to be the only one who actually enjoys grinding to a degree then after that it's not that bad. After all it's the gameplay, if you don't enjoy it, play another game, no one is forcing you. lol

Something along the lines of "Kill everyone in the room except for the one with green eyes". Usually most of the enemies in video games look the same to me so making me to kill all of them EXCEPT ONE... well, you'd have an easier time bringing a horse to water and making it drink.

Hate escort missions. The person you have to escort is always so stupid. Or they seem to have a deathwish.

Everyone knows how much I hated Doom 3.
Heh - That's exactly what I had in mind when i posted it.
Plus, how hard is it to tape//attach a flashlight to the top of your gun?
I'm pretty sure it's a blindingly simple task, void of any need for marine//spec-ops training or otherwise!
