Until or near 100%, depending on how enjoyable the game is.

I give up whenever my computer locks up... And then I proceed to put three more dents in the casing.. With a bat.

Usually, I stop when the credits roll. Unless I REALLY liked it, then I'll play it a bit more.

Otherwise, I stop when I get bored with it. That's happened a few times before.

Tyler Durden would say "Games will go on as long as they have to"

CoD4 ends when my controller gets thrown really. Or when it gets too late at night to aim properly.

i played portal once, then again a few months later. that was shiny for me. i remember it fondly.

i played a few of the metroids and SOTN style castlevanias until i got close to 100%(and finished in all alternate characters), but im nowhere near nitpicky enough to get absolutely 100%, it gets boring once i get close.

sometimes ill play until a game commits some horrible deadly sin without doing anything much to redeem itself *looks at condemned through a hundred thousand invisible walls*

other times i want to keep playing a game because its fun; but theres just a really unfun part that seriously demotivates me and takes me out of the game. (see: no more heroes)

This really is a multiple choice question, since it depends on the game and the situation.

Under optimal conditions (I own the game, it's a good game) I tend to go for near 100% completion. I'm not stuck on every sidequest, every secret and every bonus, but I will endavour to experience all of the game's content (alternative endings, branching storylines, etc.) and will try out most of the game mechanics (most of the character classes, weapons, etc.). I will, however, usually skip the various extra "challenges" such as time trials which just recycle old content.

If it's a good rental game, I'll try to accomplish the same, however I might fall a bit short due to time constraints, but I'll still prioritize content. If it's a bad rental game I'll give up as soon as I get bored.

The last option, bad game that I bought, just doesn't happen. Go informed consumerism! ;)
