I liked playing Halo, I especially liked the co-op split-screen. What I didn't like was how it "modernized" the FPS industry into regenerating health and other features which I consider to "dumbing down." It's good, but it's no quake 1 or 2.

I've mostly seen two reasons: fans (because apparently if stupid people like something that means it's automatically bad) and popularity (because apparently if a lot of people like something it's automatically bad). Both are terrible reasons fit for idiots. Outside of that there are reasons of preference, but I've even seen few of those that actually have real backing behind them. It's not a perfect series, but it's a great shooter series with a fantastic sci-fi war story, enjoyable multiplayer, and some of the greatest music ever written for a video game.

I played the first one on my PC and reached halfway only to find myself screaming at the monitor.
The second one was for vista, and the rest I didn't care because of the second.
This went by me almost unnoticed.
Perhaps because this turns to many xbox players it became so popular?
I'm a PC user exclusively, and.... I didn't enjoy halo 1.

I honestly don't think there's anything here really hate worthy. Halo might not be the greatest thing since sliced bread but I doubt it's as bad as the incredibly angry haters would have you believe.
As it stands Halo is a solid series with good, well functioning gameplay, a well balanced online multiplayer component, a pretty cool and intriquete backstory, some freaking amazing music and it hits home for me due to nostalgia and charm and happy memories playing it.

I love Halo, it might not deserve to be hailed as the greatest endevour of human existence but it also deserves way more credit then it gets. We've already had the thread about how Halo doesn't do most of the things people blame it for so I won't repeat it, I'll just say that Halo is a game series that I love. The main trilogy in particular while not perfect is still a proud addition to my collection and all the content in Halo: Reach continues to keep me busy, forging, fire fighting, customizing and online playing like mad.

Just because it's a big AAA game doesn't mean it should be despised because of it.

In my opinion, not much at all was wrong with Halo.
I don't want to start a fight here, but I'd say a lot of the people who "hate" Halo so much are the people who haven't even played it before.

Never played Halo and probably never will, I just dislike the jock dickhead culture surrounding it. I don't like being told how "epic" it is or how they feel sorry for me for not getting it.

Theres nothing wrong with it. Theres just nothing particularly good about it either, save the multiplayer. And thats why its so popular, because the good co-op managed to corner the mouth-breathing casual gamer market.

I hate "realistic" shooters that aren't Counter Strike, so I love Halo.

I consider Combat Evolved to be one of the last "Great" shooters and I very much enjoyed 2, 3, and Reach. I love the setting, the weapons, the fast paced gameplay, and the easy to control vehicles. If I had to choose between Halo and Unreal Tournament as a series it'd be a really tough call.

Halo is great, the singleplayer is a little meh, but was still action packed and at least exciting enough for a playthrough or two, it is a little easy, but the higher difficulties do offer quite a challenge.

The multiplayer is flat out awesome though, it's still the best 4-player splitscreen game since Goldeneye on the N64 in my mind. With tons of extras like theatre mode and Forge, theres something for everyone.. except those who suck at shooters in general or just plain don't like them at all.

Also, I gotta ask something - why do so many people consider Master Chief to be a bland character, while Gordon Freeman doesn't receive anywhere near that amount of criticism? Mind you, I like both the Half-Life and Halo franchises, but this is something I've never understood. Not trying to incite a flame-war here; I'm genuinely asking.
I think it's because Freeman is a silent protagonist, so he just has no spoken personality, but a lot of his back story is derived from other characters or the environment.

Master Chief on the other hand has a personality of sorts, but it's got almost nothing to it at all, we have his back story, but he only says stuff like "what do we do?" "We're going over here now", he has no personality at all, yet he speaks occasionally, and the only stuff we get is stuff that doesn't really reveal who he is as a character, like we have no hint of what he is like as a person if you know what I mean.
In the books Master Chief has a personality, a strong leader that cares about his team after realizing he can't solo everything, arrogant etc... its just in the game they tend not to give him a a massive personality.

Also I like Halo, I find it fun, it brings a different sort of appeal to the table after playing realistic shooters like Battlefield and CoD also I find the campaign quite fun to do especially on Legendary. I haven't completed Half Life 2 yet but so far I find Halo more fun the Half Life.
Mm, I've read one of the books and he's a bit more fleshed out there, which is a shame, because they could've bought it over to the game and it would've made him interesting as a character. However really we're going by games and even with the books existing, the books shouldn't need to be there in order to give a personality to a video game character, all of it should be present in the game. I enjoy playing the games, but I just feel that if they gave him remnants of a character in the game they should've gone the whole hog and given him a proper persona. Although that may have been a life saver on his part, the rest of the characters in Halo are rubbish >< Ironically the only character I feel was actually decent in Halo was Cortana, who in universe was the ARTIFICIAL intelligence.

It was console exclusive (for a while).

Seriously, this is probably the biggest reason for all the complaints. PC gamers somehow got offended by being denied an fps and found every conceivable reason to hate it, despite it being no worse than any other fps around at the time (and much better than a large majority of them).

Now the series is stagnated and the online community is less than reputable, but I still believe most of the complaints stem from PC gamers being shut out.

Let's talk about the first Halo game, because this is where it all really starts, and we really need to look at this from the separate perspectives of PC and Console gaming.

From a PC point of view, there was nothing really wrong with it. It was a perfectly competent FPS, with a few problems regarding bugs and copy-pasted levels later in the game, but not bad. The vehicle sections were fun. It was average. There was nothing exceptional about it, nothing to make it really stand out. It wasn't as innovative or story-driven as Half Life, or as brutally fun as Quake, but it was OK. Nothing more.

However, the console has a very different story. There hadn't really been many good FPSs on consoles for some time, and Halo launched at the front of a new generation of people gaming on the XBox for the first time. While it sounds snobby and elitist, the standards for an FPS on a PC were simply higher than for that on a Console, because there was more competition. And so what was really just mediocrity personified was praised as genius.

Seeing how much money and critical acclaim Halo made its creators, other companies took note and began systematically copying every aspect of Halo's insipid design, creating a scourge of power-suited space marines with regenerating health fighting aliens in repetitive environments that for a long time dominated the AAA release charts before being replaced with the current run of CoD clones. That earned it a lot of ire.

In addition, Halo 2 brought multiplayer gaming to the console in a big way for the first time through the XBox Live system, and the 8-year old teabagger quickly became an easily identified and hated icon of the franchise. Add to that the fact that the sequels seemed more like money-grabbing than actual innovation, and you can see why, at least for people who were used to better games, the franchise has attracted more than its fair share of criticism.

I played Combat Evolved way after it was released. I liked it a lot! I really felt immersed and it was a hoot on Legendary.

But then I played Halo 2 with that crapfest Games for Windows Live. -_-
It was a lot of the same and the good parts were gone.
The guns didn't felt powerful anymore. Earth isn't just a friggin' city. Cortana looked like a grumpy *****.
The alien guns were replicas of Earth guns, which doesn't make it more special in the least.
The flood created that plant from Little Shop of Horrors? Really? And it rhymes? What?

It was dissapointing. The fact that Halo didn't have boss battles made it so it didn't break the flow of gameplay. Now it's just for multiplayer alone. :'(

-Gameplay is good
-Story is excellent in my opinion, simple yet engaging

Everything about the game I enjoyed, I wasn't a particular fan of ODST though.

Halo: Reach was decent but didn't have the same effect that the previous installments had

I think most negative players fall under two catagories although some generally just don't like the game.

First, some just want to appear different. 'Going against the grain', they rebel against a popular game because it makes them feel special. I am NOT saying this is everyone, but some people are like this.

Secondly, I think most don't actually have a big problem with the game itself, their problem is more with the fans. It's like: Twilight wouldn't actually bug so many people if it weren't for the really anoying fan base, same with halo really (although twilights story/writing also inspires hatred). Those that class halo as the best game in the world, that can never be beat - well they're the same as COD fans, WOW fans... Hell I like the halo series and some fans bug me!

Personally, I've always enjoyed any Halo game I've played, even Halo Wars. They're fun games with an okay story and an awesome soundtrack.

I think the problem is that they're over-hyped. They're sometimes treated like the be-all and end all of shooters, which creates a backlash when it fails to live up to this.

Eh, it started a trend I guess. It never really 'evolved', much unlike the namesake.
"evolve" only came out of microsofts brain so it could sell better in japan...it doesnt make sense but then again neither does japan.

and didnt evolve? each game brought revolutionary ideas for console shooters!

I personally think Halo 1 + 2 are two of the best games ever. However, with Halo 3 onwards something was a little off and it was never really the same again and by the time you realize that Halo 3, ODST and Reach are barely anything like the Halo games that got you into the series, it's too late and you've already wasted your money.

Still, it's always been a favourite for local co-op/verses.

What was wrong for me - console exclusive.

Having a PS2 meant I missed the boat that one set of friends were enjoying. I did try to play it but couldn't do the 6 hour marathon sessions without major cramps as my hands weren't accustomed to the Megadrive sized Xbox controller. Man that controller sucked.

Judge ruling - Timesplitters 2 multiplayer was amazing and should be noted as the best 4-player splitscreen since Goldeneye (Halo:CE).

Sooo, I checked and Halo:CE came out almost a year before TS2. So until October 2002 I would have agreed with you.
Come on though how genius was the thief [http://editthis.info/timesplitterswiki/TimeSplitters_2] mode...?
