Biggest problem I have with it is the meh level design (it's neither interesting to look at or interesting to explore and doesn't have great flow) and the slow mid-range combat. Way too much wearing down of enemy shields for an assault rifle to be fun to use in single player. Combat is also a bit death-matchy in that it encourages very aggressive close-range tactics (or sniping)... I'm a mid-range combat guy. First look at the Halo was breath-taking but no real sense of beauty beyond that, just more of the same.

Reminds me Unreal which had the same sort of problems.

There's nothing wrong with Halo other than the community but that's not a problem with the game itself. In my opinion they're great games, they're fun and I loved the story.

I've never gotten why ODST was the most hated in the series. It had Nathan fucking Fillion in it for christ's sake.

This like COD and any other big ticket fps..its not really the game i hate( the game it self is quite fun for a time)
The community however drags it down....

I just wasn't really into shooters back when I had the opportunity to play it I guess, (I'm still not really although I do play Team Fortress 2 now and then) and also my older brother absolutely loved it, and wanted me to play it with him ALL the time. and when someone nags and nags you nonstop to play a game with them you tend to like it less,

EDIT: also I never really liked Mastercheif...I found him really boring, and there weren't any other characters I liked either

to be honest the most fun I had with a Halo game was the PC version of Halo 1, years ago

someone at school put it on the computer system and everyone played it, and we got this map-mod thing that put a stage from Mario Kart on the game as a playable map, and we would have races and jousts with Warthogs....and fights to the death of course

People are always telling me why they hate halo but I want to know why and ill be very dissapointed if all of the complaints are the douches on the XBL (the douche comment is aimed at the 8 year old teabagers and people who rage and say what are you doing give me the sniper rifle and get out of the tank why did you shoot me) sorry to those who where offended
I'm sorry but what exactly does this have to do with Glenn Beck?

Disliking stuff alot of other people do like makes you look cool. Seeing everyone and their mothers like halo its cool to hate it and be a pro gamer and not a bro gamer.

I respect it, but like it? No.

I respect it because it is pretty genre-defining. It made the whole sci-fi shooter thing popular again, and made the "faceless hero" a real cult hit. (Yes, I know Half-Life did it first but Halo enjoyed a lot more success with it.)

I dislike it, however, because it never really developed. It stagnated and the mechanics didn't even tighten up much between the original and the third (I can't comment on ODST or Reach, seeing as I haven't played them). I also don't like it because I don't like first person shooters, so obviously it isn't going to float my boat.

I remember being quite impressed with Halo: CE when I first played it. But I believe it was more to do with the visual and graphical side of things, thanks to that cyclopean black brick known as the Xbox. Halo 2 was also impressive... because of visual and graphical appeal. I have played, in total, about 2 hours of Halo 3. The other games...

Game play wise, Halo: CE/Halo 2 were decent, but I think I was more sucked in by the "Ooo, new shiny hardware and prettiness" side of things more than anything else. Although saying that, with Halo 2, I really disliked how textures would pop in when cut scenes would start, and how the skin textures on human characters were just so damn ugly.

Later, I got Halo: CE for the PC, and even though it is perhaps a little better, control wise due to the keyboard and Mouse (Yes, I am an elitist arsehole), it haven't aged well.
I have never bothered with multiplayer. The idea of being shouted at and called a noob by fourteen year olds (My first FPS joke, there. Edgy!) would hardly be an experience I'd have much patience for. In short, Halo: CE is/was a comparte FPS, but it?s not the pinnacle of first person shooters that it seems to be labeled as.

what about the regenerating health. In halo ce that changed so much by making you play in a more realistic manner, using cover all the time.

meh for me and my friends, we found the gameplay to be the most compelling part of it, and it's actually one of VERY VERY few shooters who does co op right and makes it easy to do

otherwise back on the gameplay mark, i like their combination of the shield and health so that each and every encounter is equal in that you both start off with same health and there are multitudes of ways to win that fight (melee combination, grenade combination, all out assault with gun,etc..)

personally i just don't get that from other fps's, they seem more of a "RAWR MUST WIN MUST WIN NEVER DIE LEET" rather than halo which is way more fun and way less rage inducing.

the story in the games is a bit overrated, i love the books, but the games single players aren't that strong, which there isn't a problem with that, i just think people come rawring into the game expecting the best single player ever when no one i know has ever bragged about it -_-

I freaking love halo, the problem is halo reach ruined the saga by trying things that didn't made the game unique, and the community like in most games is crap

I loved the first Halo back in 2001/2002 or whenever it came out, it was the first game i can remember playing that had genuinly decent vehicle sections, i really liked the story and setting and all of the enemies were quite memorable (and discovering the flood was a holy crap moment)

but personally i dont think the sequals ever improved or changed anything enough, which i think is why people might have been dissapointed.

Derka derka there's really not much to the Halo games. I dig melee and vehicle combat (at some point I'm sure someone will come along and make playable vehicle combat).

I don't get why any real gamer would prefer regenerating health to an actual challenge, or homogenous levels without boss fights and with few scripted events to break up the monotony. It would be myopic to blame Halo exclusively for the snoozefest that is the typical modern shooter, but it all really started with Halo. Halo was the first big offender. The guns look like Fischer-Price toys, the only cool elements of the art design are the product of Cameron larceny, and the alien invaders, who had a chance here to be really friggin' scary, are just goofy.

So for me, the fans saying "Nuh-uh! Halo rules, ******! I did your mom last night!" is just crap icing on an already crappy cake. I don't think the franchise is really horrible, just sinfully mediocre.

I liked Halo. It was the defining FPS of its time like Goldeneye on the N64 or Call of Duty now.

It's still good in the same way that Goldeneye is still good.

On its own merits, it is a functional and enjoyable game.

I agree with what Yahtzee said in his review. It's a run of the mill shooter. However, it's a run of the mill shooter on the console - which was a notoriously difficult genre to play on console at the time.

By the time Halo: Combat Evolved came out the PC already had many good FPS's.

I picked up Combat Evolved on the Xbox back in 2003, and it remains one of my all time favorite FPS's. 2, 3, ODST, and Reach were all very good games as well (particularly 3, which I had a shit-ton of fun online with some friends from another forum the summer of 2008). Excellent gameplay, decent stories, excellent graphics and aesthetics for each game's respective time, I don't know what more you're asking for. Okay, they may not be the absolute greatest games ever crafted, but they're all over good, enjoyable experiences.

I dislike it because it was considered the dogs bollocks of innovation, which I'm sure was true for the console circles.
But I came from a long line of PC FPS games and I played the first Halo with an open mouth, because I couldn't fathom if the entire thing was a big joke, or just a game designed for really slow kids.

The game is middle of the road, but it started the "dumbing down" march that everyone joined in on and for that I be hatin.

I feel your pain, brother. I wish XBLA would allow us to filter players based on age groups also. Those immature kids that shoot you on the back because, God forbid, you take THEIR sniper rifle.
