I work at a family owned video game store (yeah Game Stop and the big box department stores haven't gotten rid of us all yet) where we buy, sell, trade and repair classic games and systems. Our claim to fame in our town is that we are the only place where you can get everything from your Pong system to your PS3 repaired by certified techs and our work is covered by a warranty that doesn't cost extra. We also try to sell and trade used movies. I wish we didn't as they sell so poorly. Business is brisk in the system and game repair segments though. We don't carry as many of the latest games as Game Stop and their ilk do but that's because buying those games at almost retail price from distributers (who almost always send them late) then turning around and selling them for just under the price the big stores charge (which is the only way most customers will buy new games from us. We got so sick of hearing "it's cheaper at Costco and Walmart" we finally caved in and gave up what little profit we were making on new games)is not profitable enough to justify the shelf space the new games take up. Gotta make at least enough to pay the utilities, rent and employee wages otherwise there's no store. I've actually had to explain that to a few customers who tried to get us to sell stuff to them at below cost just because they claimed they saw it cheaper online or at some discount warehouse store (neither of which have the overhead nor the customer service of a real store like ours).
When I'm not working there, I do computer repair out of my apartment. Work is a bit slow sometimes, but at least I get to be my own boss and decide what my own hours are. I take the projects that I'm comfortable with doing and pass the others on to other guys and small businesses I know of that can deal with that project better than I can.
As much as I love working in the game store (which I truly do most of the time), I'd rather be busier at computer repair. I'm trying to get hired by a few different small computer shops around town. I wouldn't be my own boss anymore, but I'm finding out that trying to build your own business is really tough. Especially if you don't have a lot of money already that you can invest in growing the business. "Takes money to make money" is a very true statement. Any of those "get rich quick" schemes that try to tell you different are lying.
P.S. To the guys who keep saying "this topic has already been done before": most of us don't care! If you are tired of seeing the topic being reposted, ignore it and go on to a "original" topic, if you can find one. Who wants to dig through the old posts looking for a topic similar enough to the one you want to start so you can try to revive it? Not me. I have better things to do with what little free time I have.
