You're not the only one, sadly.

It's baffling how many think it's worth paying hundreds of dollars for some visual effects, less loading times, longer development cycles, less innovation, etc.

If they're willing to push the AI and physics as much as graphics, it would be nice, but the budgets would skyrocket, so it's not likely to happen.

A new generation of consoles means higher resolution, more RAM and less games/more expensive games for not much more fun or wow factor.

They should wait until technology is able to allow faster and cheaper development, a new console would practically kill off most of the small developers

It's more than half a decade old tech, we've reached the limit of what we can do with this hardware and we need to move on to the next... However, it maybe a good thing to wait just a bit for some real innovation to come along in a form that isn't concentrating graphical enhancement... Which is the only reason I can think to delay a console release... but the entire thing is holding good developers back from bringing out the full potential of PC gaming... which is the worst part...

I would love to see a new console for whoever come out! Granted I wouldn't buy it until maybe 2 years after release so that I can finish up games with my Xbox 360 and also so I would be able to pick out the best games from those 2 years. I think developers also want it too so that they can start making biggers and better games too! Its a win/win for everyone!

The graphics in this gaming generation have impressed me (at first). NOTHING else about this generation has been very impressive. If all the gaming industry can do is tickling my eyes happy, then yes, I want a new console now because these current ones are starting to show their age and their ugly.

Before anyone says: OMG how much better do you think games can look? I would like them to look as good as all the scripted cinemas the game industry is now infamous for in their fake BS demos. That would be a good start. i am not going to complain about the monotonous themes or motion control BS of this generation - I've pretty much just succumbed to the idea that this is now what gaming is - but If games are going to be boring in every other aspect, at least make them that pretty.

More processing power is always good. There is actually no reason to be opposed to a new console generation.
Finances. I'f prefer if there was not a new console generation until I'm finished uni. That being said, I can always do what I did when the 360 launched (PS3 came out like 18 months after the 360 in Australia).
Play PC games and old games that I never got around to until the console is like $400.00 rather than $700.00

I'm up for getting the Wii U, but beyond that... not really.

I have a PS3, and there still seems to be plenty of life left in the old girl, so unless the PS4 makes the tea and dispenses Krispie-Kreme doughnuts free of charge, I can't really see myself going for an upgrade any time soon...

These new consoles won't be around until 2013 at the very least. By the time they're actually released, I'll be ready for one.

Sony has a ten-year lifespan for their consoles (as in, console support). That seems reasonable to me, especially when the successor is released in the older console's twilight years. The new one gets geared up while the old one gets phased out. It's a good transition method, I think.

Being a PC gamer, I want a new generation, purely so that PC games will stop being limited on graphical quality by awful ports.

Also, I want whatever Sony rolls out next anyway. I missed out with the PS3, so if PS4 comes out, PS3 will be super cheap and I can get the 15 or so games that were PS3 exclusive and play them! :D

"I feel like so much more could be done with the current technology."

Like what, exactly? Devs have had to cut corners for ages now: appalling FOV (like a fucking letterbox), no (or poorly implemented) anti-aliasing, an extremely selective use of good textures, etc.

While there is nothing wrong with the current gen of consoles, but we will reach a point, or have reached a point, where you can't make a game all it can be. Outdated and old technology will hold back the ever improving quality of games. Graphics and other trivial things, sure, but we need to improve where we can. The current gen has been around for a while. I'm not going to dig through Wikipedia to find out exact dates. I do think we're in need of an update. Maybe not in the immediate future, but soon.
Even though there will be a new Xbox I'm still going to hold on to my 360, there's no point in throwing away a perfectly good console.

I agree with you. There doesn't seem to be anything the current consoles can't handle that isn't just graphics (Wii not included).

However, I'm bored of my consoles and don't plan on getting another console barring something I haven't gotten any version of yet (like a PSP), so it's up to you guys.

Edit: I'll get a new console when they release something that actually advances gaming, like advanced AI that generates custom maps/storylines/dialogue for a game every time you play (as opposed to more power/new control systems that do what we already can).

I'm 100% a PC gamer, and don't own any consoles, but that said, every single advancement is better. Better console technology means console owner can enjoy better games (Hey, good for them!), and since it's now apparent that the old PC->Console port method has changed to Console->PC port, it's probably that it'd also mean better looking (If not neccesarily better playing) games for the PC as well, so yeah. Go for it.

Except, designers... don't spend the first 5 years of the next generation trying to show off good graphics, then spend 1 year actually focusing on good GAMES, and move on to the next, please.

Because, if everyone thought like you, we'd still be playing Super Mario Bro's style games. Technology advancement would stagnate.

Also, it would give modern game development a push, allowing them to advance beyond the boundaries currently set by the console limitations.
What exactly are those boundaries? Excluding even higher end graphics, what boundaries are the current consoles presenting us as gamers that you feel a more powerful console system would be able to over come?

ITT: We disagree with OP by saying we need more processing power to break the gaming boundaries, but in other threads we complain that the "old games were the most innovative"
