As a big fan of the epic (but okay buggy) Arcanum I find myself longing for a game that mixes elves and steam trains, dwarves and hydraulic axes, orcs in tuxes and evil gnome inventors.

Why has no one pushed this genre recently. It seems an obvious diversion from the Tolkienism that seems to be so intrinsic in western RPG's. I'm not a massive fan of sci fi over fantasy but after playing Mass Effect 2 I found the change of scenery most refreshing.

I know Bioshock dabbles in steampunk to some effect but wouldn't a Steampunk fantasy world be awesome fun and easy to apply to a game. Would other people like this or is it just me?

Edit: Changed the title for clarity ;) Sorry about that.

As another fan of Arcanum, I agree that it is an underused setting with a huge amount of potential.

Hmmmm. Well, I do like brass and gages and stuff...
Maybe it has been made? What do I know?

If it was well done, I could totally go for some steampunk RPG.

The Chaos Engine, Thief II, Most of the Final Fantasy, Myst, American McGee's Alice, The Eidolon, Epic Mickey, The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom, Lemony Snicket, On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Space 1889, Torchlight...

There's a few around, but Steampunk is a geekness among geeks.

There are games that jump in with Steampunk, like Warcraft and Bioshock, but nothing comes to mind that's really central like you seem to want. I'm not even sure why, as we all know there are lots of people that like that sort of thing and would dive on it at a moments notice. It's sort of a geek's fantasy to have Steampunk stuff. Seems like good business to me.

Calumon: So Jack'll play games about making Yucky tea? Blegh!

Well, FF6 was Steam Punk.

Of course, that was a while ago now. A new steam-punk RPG would be wonderful. I'd approve.

I'm liking your orcs in tuxes idea. Who says a big, green-skinned guy with tusks can't also be a sophisticated gentleman?

I agree its a good setting for a game, but just having a steam punk world doesn't mean much to a game without a good back-story and tight game-play mechanics.

Probably the best licensed material for a steampunk game would be the Warmachine Tabletop game.

Bioshock 3 is VERY Steampunk.
Wait for it to get released and enjoy yourself. It's high tech powered by steam engines, the best Steampunk can offer. (Play Thief 3 if you really want a Steampunk game. Even now that game is great).
Thief 4 is being developed in Montreal by the same company that does Deus Ex 3, therefore I am hoping for a nicely done stealth game in a Steampunk setting.

You are kidding I hope?
Many Final Fantasy Games, World of Warcraft, and Torchlight (Root ninjaed most).

But still, there are some! Also Chrono Trigger.

Like he said, you've got World of Warcraft taking a couple of steampunk notes, and BioShock.

There are also a couple of old Final Fantasy titles that take that route. It's rare, but not non-existent. The dark ages fantasy and cyberpunk fantasy are just a little more common as of late.

GURPS Steampunk
If you are interested in table top RPGs.
It is more classic steampunk, so it doesn't have elves and dwarves. Though you could easily add magic and elves and what not using the basic book or GURPS Fantasy.

However, Castle Falkenstein is another table top RPG that is steampunk and does have magic, elves, dwarves, etc. That comes in both the original variety and the GURPS adaptation.

You're right, there aren't that many steampunk RPGs right now. On the other hand, there aren't really that many RPGs right now.

To be completely honest, I always felt like the steampunk elements in the Final Fantasy games were just weak excuses to have modern systems of transport (but mostly trains and airships) in a fantasy setting.

"No, it's driven by a magic engine! That's why we have industrial technology!"
