I myself find them a very simple, basic form of entertainment and don't see why they are so frowned upon here. Besides, if you don't like them, don't read them. What are your opinions on them?

They offer no discussion value and they tend to be a spot where hate and flaming tend to manifest.

For example, a vs thread about Master Chief vs Gordon Freeman will definitely attract a lot of flames for a number of reasons. That tends to be why they're looked down upon here. There isn't any entertainment in them.

Because then everyone has to bring their flame shields and those things take up a lot of room when there's more than three.

I don't get why the wouldn't just make flaming against the rules though, I mean surely The Escapist does, but since they do, why not let us keep VS threads.

So this is...a versus thread.
Versus threads vs. non-versus threads.

We're getting very meta here.

Fair enough, but in that case they could make an option to hide individual threads. Maybe a little more work, but it could work for both parties.

Isn't any entertainment value is simply your opinion, and if you could hide the threads than it wouldn't matter.

From the "Banhammer and You" thread:

Vs. Threads: These are dull, repetitive, and are surefire ways to start a flame war. All three things that The Escapist does not wish to be recognised as.

And the lack of discussion value doesn't help them either.

versus threads are good for when people want to argue i think, as long as it isn't something like xbox vs ps3 which some people get too passionate about...

A lot of them I see seem like perfect flamebate...

I know the overwhelming population of the Escapist is perfectly reasonable when it comes to well thought and respectable debates, but it just takes one bad apple to spoil that...

I agree, and whats wrong with a light argument now and then? Also, PC gaming master race>all consoles.

I guess, and it could be a perfect place for trolls to manifest.

This thread isn't a vs thread though. Its a discussion on Vs threads, there is a difference.

Vs threats could be good fun, but they require peeps to be unbiased and have an open mind plus a willigness to debate rather then flame or calling others retards for not having the same viewpoints.

Depends on the subject matter for me. If it's like "Monday's world cup game country X vs country Y - who are you supporting?" etc I don't mind

But things like "game/console X vs Y which is better?" just promotes biased opinions clashing and spiraling into arguements

They inevitably turn into an E-peen sausage fest, even if not a flame war.

People will already have tossed their entire hand in with their favorite contender and will argue to the death, without considering alternatives.

Here is a visual metaphor for such discussions, most geeks will understand:

I got the impression from some posts that people considered this one.

I like VS threads when its a nice friendly debate, but when it gets out of hand it needs to stop (this happens frequently on this website), I barely touch the religion/politics discussion nowadays.
