People will already have tossed their entire hand in with their favorite contender and will argue to the death, without considering alternatives.
I cannot agree more, Im sick of those ego-tistical assholes that are so self-absorbed with their own opinion, they try their hardest to prove someone with an opposing view wrong.

They promote a lot of theoretical/cross 'verse' discussions and ''what ifs'' depending on the vs. For example, Goku VS the Death Star. Naturally he could just power up and blast it, but what if Vader blew up the planet Goku was on? Then someone else jumps in, says no way that'd never happen, etc etc and it leads to a lot of speculation which can anger fans of either side. x.x
I guess. I myself don't mind that much speculation as long as people back up their opinions on why such and such cant such and such unless such and such etc etc

We are not allowed VS threads here?

Failure to follow this simple rule will get you banned from EVERY SUMMER E GAMES EVENT and ALL MEDALS WILL BE STRIPPED.
See, I don't even know what summer e games event is nor what these medals are he speaks of, but I am tempted to go to that thread and break said rule to not have to worry about it.

One, perhaps more minor reason is because the replies you get will more than likely consist of "choice A" or "choice B" sometimes with a small jokey statement to acompany the choice.

The second, more major reason, to me at least, is that they could easily devolve into flame wars. For example, someone makes a VS thread entitled "PS3 vs Xbox 360: Which is better?" and you can easily see how that is an opening for a flame war. It will lead to die hard fanboys of either console attacking the die hard fanboys of the other with (more likely than not) homophobic insults and racial attacks. To avoid that, we tend to avoid VS threads altogether here.

The hate on verse threads is caused by the hate IN verse threads. I think they can be fine at times provided people are rational, but lets face it, if you start a PC vs Consoles thread you're going to be attracting a LOT of fanboys, and some of us just plainly don't wanna see people irrationally claim a right to ignorance and aggression.

E games event: just like that thread, over and over again. Medals= those nice little pictures under your name.

See, I don't even know what summer e games event is nor what these medals are he speaks of, but I am tempted to go to that thread and break said rule to not have to worry about it.

Versus threads can go die in a fire. Not only do they very infrequently lead to a proper discussion, but they take up space on the thread lists in the forums which could be occupied by more interesting, more complex and better-thought-out threads.
As I have said in this thread, if there was a "hide thread" option, and they just enforced a no-flaming rule (as they do) it wouldn't matter. I mean, hiding the thread is one extra click, but it's only one extra click.

Chalk that up to hypocrisy.

OT:

I understand why they aren't allowed. They will degrade into pissing contests. And be honest. Most people just pick the character/whatever that's there favourite and bullshit their way through the arguments.

When they're done rite they can be mildly entertaining. But probably not worth the hassle to the mods as a whole.
That is actually a very good point, I had not taken into account the hassle on Mods.

Sounds thrilling.

Medals= those nice little pictures under your name.
You mean like those other things I have turned off so I don't have to look at them? Kind of like how I refuse to make an avatar and have them turned off, too?

That punishment sounds like something I would want.

I don't mind them, but a lot of the time flaming and senseless arguing will ensue, turning the thread into a joke.

If you like VS threads your best bet is probably to head on over to http://www.comicvine.com/.

Their forums have a decent amount of well thought out VS threads. Obviously they're not all good. But they probably have some of the best I've seen.
I'll check it out, thanks

It's like being a good driver. You don't worry about yourself, but rather everyone else. While you may be able to handle it, others may not. :]
I love myself so much.xD

What you may not have seen is how many probations, suspensions and bans that resulted from those battles.

Considering most topics nowadays are either stories or 'what is the _____?', I think we could use some VS threads. At least VS threads have discussion and debate in them.

But I can understand the mod's fear of flame wars. This stuff is kindling.

Then the question still remains. If they are indeed outlawed and if they are such a pain in the ass and either result in so many fights or just have pratically zero discussion value, why are the moderators hosting their own set of them?
Shouldn't they be following the rules that they put down and not tempting the users with threads they know will bring out their bad sides?
I asked that question straight to one of the staff when the legacy battles were going on. I'll let you know when they answer. Don't hold your breath. I have only been waiting months for an answer.

I do expect the answer to be along the lines of "do as we say not as we do".

It tends to lead to a flame war between the seperate fans.

For example: Xbox vs PS3. Obviously the two sides are going to be at a disagreement.

As everyone else said, they are gigantic arguments that involve fanboys ranting. Personally, I don't really mind them. I should probably try to avoid them though... I always forget the golden rule of arguments... And I can see why they are against the rules here...

Because many Escapist here are very paranoid that there will be an all out war GameFAQs style. Which I've never seen happen.
