Because they polarise people. Polarised people lose IQ and fight. Fighting is bad.

i love a good arguement, as long as it doesnt get out of hand and swearing and insults start flying all over the place, but i think banning VS threads in all together is going too far! (pirates vs ninjas? ninjas every time!)

Pirates>Ninjas. After all, his noodly goodness the Flying Spaghetti Monster considers pirates holy, and says that high polution is due to lack of pirates (Example: Somalia=Lots of pirates, low carbon footprint.

They annoy me, it's just an endless argument of who/what is better, and you'll never be able to change a person's mind.

We are not allowed VS threads here?

That's not even a true versus thread, although it says "vs" in the title. It's who you like better, for a special event, for the Escapist.

How about vs threads vs polls. Which is more inappropriate? Why is the thread name and topic so far apart? Essentially we have three options, yes, no and why so much hate on vs threads. Any of the options is rather lame. Might as well ask: Why do you have an opinion about something you feel strongly about?

You are all completely wrong. Everyone's sayin that a vs thread will undoubtedly and inevitably lead to a flame war. Allow me to show you a vs thread that has existed for 253 pages without flame wars; http://www.nuklearforums.com/showthread.php?t=22012

I would argue that whether a community can find discussion value in a given subject/not start a flame war over said subject is down to the quality of the community. Take that as you will.

People love side A, people love side B.

These people aren't terribly bright, so they feel they must passionately argue for their love with someone on the internet.

And that starts a flame.

Many things, the main of which being little discussion value and trolling fanboys/haters.

But, you just gotta look at 'em and say...

Personally I could happily live with vs. threads if everyone were mature enough and could write out detailed arguments with valid points and generally not act as though whatever opinion they hold is right just because they hold it. Understandably the last bit can be hard to achieve because if you hold an opinion there's usually - though not always - a reason for it, so it can be a bit of a challenge to accept that sometimes the belief you hold is not actually correct and more often than not people out right refuse to admit defeat and start flaming and making personal remarks. In theory vs. threads can work well and bring about intelligent discussion it's just that very few people are willing to have their opinions changed. However, the subject/s used in vs. threads plays a part. "Whose a better character X or character Y" is asking for low content especially when the thread is joined by those just wanting to post simply because they can and not because they have both knowledge and interest on the subject. But, and I'm not joking here, fayboys aside, it is more than possible (at least in theory) to have a thread discussing which is better, the Xbox 360 or the PS3 because they both have aspects that could be conceived as better or worse and given the right poeple you could come up with a pretty good verdict. Unfortunately one of the major draw backs of vs. threads, even if you had a whole forum of reasonable debaters and could actually make it through a topic without acting like complete muppets is that there's the repeat... repeat... repeat... repeat... factor. Because assuming it isn't a complete one-off in all aspects there is going to be someone somewhere down the line who will ask the same question and then we get the whole necromancy against repeating a topic conundrum.

The pity for me is that nowadays, more often than not, even The Escapist - once a bastion of civility on the web - has, just through growing popularity and therefore numbers, succumbed to the level where a most of the users cannot maintain a level of decency and open-mindedness to allow a vs. topic to work. All too many are just looking to boost their post count by replying to a topic with embarrassingly short and badly thought out answers. Even if a reply to a thread is wrong - at least in your view - if it's lengthy, well written and, if necessary, backed up with links then there's a chance that you'll understand their view better. And even if you don't end up with a changed opinion there's nothing wrong with both parties agreeing to disagree; it just doesn't ever seem to happen.

I don't get it either, a vs thread about many topics would develop a lot of discusion value. The flame thing i get, but that's a) what mods are for, b)haven't seen much here even on vs threads, and c)something we have to live with when we use the internet. just my opinion.

They could work, if the people involved in these VS threads could form healthy debates and actually discuss the topic on hand instead of saying "you noob master chief is bettur!", therefore reducing the thread into a flame war. Since we're not perfect, it's better to keep the VS threads out.

I find the flame wars entertaining. I also like to see which side of that coin is more favourable.
